  1. I thought Burns looked good. Broke up a nice cross ice feed from the backside. And generally seemed solid.

Svech looked good also. Real 3d chess move to set up their goalie to take out his own guy

Freddie deserves some love. It has to be hard to go without any shots for so long and then get a couple mid-high danger chances early on.

Despite how strong we looked, I think the team will look better when they settle. Is it possible that we were skating too hard?

Edit: to add another line to Burns

  2. We have the opposing goalie so shook he’s injuring his own teammates. I feel great

  3. Why do people say Canes don’t have a great atmosphere? I’ve been to TD Garden, Capitol One Arena, MSG, O2 Arena, and Ball Arena. IMO Canes have just as electric as an atmosphere as any of these places.

  4. Encouraging things from Game 1:
    – Playoff Svech: making an impact on the game through fast, physical, and disciplined play.
    – signature Hurricanes hockey being fast and shooting without hesitation, generating traffic in fromt of the net
    – New Jersey showing signs of frustration already
-Trade deadline acquisitions really shining in their playoff debuts (Hall as a playmaker, Stankoven burying chances and being everywhere at once)
    – Mr. Andersen being calm and ready to make the saves needed to win (no mom’s spaghetti)
-PP somehow looking better against the Devils who are also a great penalty killing team

Things to watch out for/address in Game 2:

Is it Kochetkov’s turn? I still think so. The Hurricanes are not going to win the Cup on the back of a single goalie. The longer Kochetkov waits, the more risk that he’s coming in cold and not at his best. Even though he’s struggled lately and Andersen did great in Game 1, I think the Canes will need to give Freddie a break at some point and for the most part the rotation has worked in their favor this season. I also think being up 1-0 in the series and playing on home ice might be the most favorable situation for Kooch to get in his first playoff game this year. Just my opinion; I could be wrong.

1st line scoring: Maybe the one concern (besides Kochetkov) that I have is if the trio of Jarvis, Blake, and Aho don’t score in Game 2 that they might have a hard time getting things going in New Jersey. Especially Aho. My read (and not just mine; others have shared this view) has always been that he tries so hard to be the leader and deliver, that sometimes he presses too much to the point that it actually causes him to play worse (missing shots, taking gambles, making decisions out of frustration).

How do the Devils respond? Speaking of frustration, they showed it already in Game 1. I honestly expect a similar effort from the Canes, but for NJ do they play a more disciplined game or do they get even more out of control? I do worry about risk of injury the longer this series goes on, so going up 2-0 is not only preferred for obvious reasons but also to shorten the series and avoid potential injury. We know that it’s likely the Capitals will be up next, and I expect that series to be BRUTAL.

Use of depth? Other than Kochetkov, I don’t expect Rod to make changes to the lineup. But I think Jankowski may be utilized when the series shifts to New Jersey in place of Roslovic. Jank is pretty responsible defensively so when Roslovic can’t be protected by last change it makes sense to swap them out. I would like to see some rotation among the bottom 6 so that you’re getting a fresh body in every game, but I don’t think RBA will do that. It’s nice that the Hurricanes have potential playoff contributors like Jankowski and Nikishin lying in wait.
