MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) –
I enjoyed time with my younger son and his wife in beautiful San Diego the last two weeks. One of the several highlights of the trip was seeing the San Diego Padres take on the Chicago Cubs last Wednesday afternoon at beautiful Petco Park. I thought maybe I would get to see Lucedale native Justin Steele pitch for the Cubs. Unfortunately for Steele, he had reconstructive elbow surgery last Friday and is out for the season.
San Diego is an amazing place to visit. Going to the San Diego Zoo, the USS Midway, Balboa Park, Torrey Pines, Sea World, Little Italy or Old Town is worth your time. You can’t go wrong going to La Jolla Cove, Mission Beach and Ocean Beach, which boast awesome sunsets, host avid surfers and scuba divers, and are a haven to the resting seals. You may want to take one of the harbor cruises or go West Coast fishing. Of course, to me, visiting world-famous Hodad’s in Ocean Beach was worth the airplane ticket to enjoy one of the best burgers outside of Mississippi.
The visit was heavenly, but, in the end, I’m always ready to head back to home sweet home for some fried chicken, catfish and barbeque — and a slower pace of life.
USM won another baseball series while Ole Miss and MSU could manage only one win against South Carolina and Florida in their SEC series. USM is tied for second place in the Sun Belt with Troy as both teams trail leader Coastal Carolina by two games. The Eagles (27-13, 12-6) hit the road to face third place Appalachian State this weekend. Ole Miss (28-12, 10-8) will host Vandy while Mississippi State (24-14, 6-12) will head to Auburn this weekend.

Lee Corso is finally hanging it up after nearly a four-decade run on ESPN’s “College GameDay.” Corso, who began with the show in 1987, will broadcast his final show on Week 1 of the college football season on August 30. Corso, who turns 90 in August, is well-known for famously saying, “Not so fast, my friend.”
The NCAA football transfer portal is busy this spring. More than 4,000 football players have signed up, and the list is growing by the hour. This transfer portal period closes this Friday. This is the last chance for underclassmen to switch teams before the beginning of the 2025 season.
Ole Miss guard Madison Scott was selected by Dallas 14th overall in the second round of the recent WNBA draft. Scott, who can play several positions, was the third pick by Dallas in the draft. She joins the No. 1 overall pick in UConn’s Pagie Buecker.
Golf Odd & Ends
California golfer Mike Barber, who holds the Guinness world golf record for shooting equal to or below one’s age, reached a special milestone recently for the 1,500th time. The 86-year-old Barber shot a 79, beating his age by seven strokes. He was 70 when he shot below his age for the first time and set the world record in April 2023 by shooting below his age for the 1,140th time.
The Masters is one of the greatest sports events in the world. The Augusta National practice facility is used only 11 days a year and is worth $150 million. Some 1,500 private jets were parked at the Augusta airport during Masters week. That is about 1,499 more than average.
