I’m done spending money on the NHL

Watching Parise and Suter go through the handshake line last night pushed me over the edge, fuck the NHL and their corrupt money grubbing.

  1. Signing Parise and Suter to legal contracts then being retroactively punished by the league after they changed the rules. We’re still dealing with this in the buyouts.
  2. Inability to conduct operations openly. Why is the draft order drawn in secret? Without proof otherwise I will continue to believe they rig the draft for teams (cough) Bedard (cough).

Thanks to u/nihilaeternumest for the below info:

The draft order isn't drawn in secret. The drawings are on YouTube, they're just even more boring than the TV reveal.

Here's the video for the Bedard draft

  1. Partnering with Fanatics for merch. Shitty company makes shitty products.
  2. Continued LTIR abuse by teams with no repercussions. Especially shitty following point one above.
  3. Making it impossible to watch teams in market without cable (or even with cable lately). It’s 2024, the fact I can’t pay money and watch the team I want is ridiculous.
  4. Continued decline of quality of refereeing.
  5. Inconsistent messaging on discipline and player safety.

Edit: 8. Gambling. Fucking. Everywhere.

I’m done buying merch. I’m done buying tickets. I’m going to continue to watch pirate streams of games. But I’m done spending any money on things that go to the NHL.

  1. Solid list there overall. Should still be noted teams were told not to sign deals like that anymore or there would be repercussions and we did it anyways knowing there would be issues at the back end of the contracts.

  2. Other than buying that beautiful winter classic jersey I’ve been with you on that no spending money on the nhl. Only game I’ve gone to my dad won tickets to and I pirate every game I watch. Great points all around.

  3. I agree with you on all 7 points. But the Wild are my favorite team ever so I’m gonna keep buying tickets and beers and a couple more Adidas jerseys. I can’t completely boycott my guys 🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️🏴‍☠️

  4. Save this rant for Facebook. And almost no one believes that you are done spending money on watching hockey.

  5. haven’t spent a dime on the NHL since Bettman’s last lockout, woth how hard it is to watch legelly, each passing year I sail the high seas less and less and I’m pretty much at the point of only seeing the reddit thread for info. NHL has done a tremendous job of furthering my. disinterest, add an owner and leadership that is content with mediocrity and I’m pretty well just a distant fan now.

  6. For those of you saying the drawings are on YouTube, please direct me to the one with Crosby. The Wild had just as much chance as the Penguins to get him.

The NHL and whoever they have TV contracts with want Minnesota and the Canadian teams to remain in mediocrity forever. They know that people will always watch and go to games no matter what. The league has already bent rules to the point of them not being worth a damn.

I’m tired of it as well.

  7. Maybe if the Wild could develop players and not have an ol’ boys club than maybe we wouldn’t be whining so much about our one and done group.

  8. NHL has really messed up a prime hockey market here in Minnesota. The commissioner is the root of all the problems. Money over integrity of the league.

  9. Right there with you – I stopped buying merch, attending games, and frankly even watching for the most part when they backtracked their LGBT support and prioritized comforting bigots.

  10. The gambling all across sport has got me kinda sick…great for you if you can handle it responsibly and have made a nice profit. it’s a real problem for some people though and the fact that say nicotine can’t be advertised on TV, alcohol can’t be shown actually being drank (drunk?) in ads compared to the ubiquity of gambling is strange to me. It makes me question the integrity of the sport. It seems two faced too looking at the Shane pinto suspension

Gambling has its place of course, I do it sometimes but I agree with OP it’s just how all encompassing it is now

  11. Same. The 2012 lockout for me though when they were arguing over the fair share of our “fan dollars”

    Crisis of faith.
