The San Jose Sharks Acquire Jake Walman And Bob McKenzie Releases His Final NHL Draft Rankings

the S sharks trade for Jake Walman and the bobf father Bob McKenzie puts out his final draft ranking so big show today you’re locked on sharks your daily podcast on the San Jose Sharks part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day hello welcome welcome to locked on sharks the premier hockey podcast covering your favorite team in the Bay Area my name is JD young caretaker at The Reef also the co-host of Western Conference Tuesdays on the lockdown NHL Network want to thank you for making lock on sharks your first listed probably part of the lock on network we cover your team every day if you want to be an every dayer uh now’s the perfect time to get in you can follow wherever you get Podcast of course you can watch on YouTube as well the Sharks uh making a massive trade today acquiring Jake Wallman from the Detroit Red Wings and second round pick so we’re going to break down that uh plus we’re going to look at Bob McKenzie’s uh list so we’re g to see who he kind of how he has the top 20 ranks with the sharks having number one and number 14 and then look at some of the potential targets uh for the Sharks when it comes to 33 42 and now 53 Mike career big bunny Mike with five picks in the top 53 um of this draft so um before we get to all that though do want to let you guys know that today’s episode is brought to you by Game Time download the game time app create an account and use code locked on NHL for $20 off your first purchase terms apply Mike Greer literally asked yesterday or on Monday Mike are you gonna get a try to find a puck moving defenseman and what does he do oh what a trade love this trade so the Sharks uh get defenseman Jake wman uh who we’ll talk about here a little bit more in a second they also get a 2022 second round pick number 53 overall and all they had to do was give away everyone favorite player future consideration so if you don’t know what that means it means nothing the shark gave up nothing for Jake Wallman and a 2020 uh 4 second round pick so this was 100% a cap dump by the Detroit Red Wings moving off a player um trying to move his his uh contract and it’s Paving the way for them to be able to do something else uh later on but what I love about this is not only you’re not just getting like an asset that like one you’re getting a second round pick which is a very valuable asset and we’ll talk a little bit more about that here in a minute but Jake wallman’s like good like legitimately good you’re not just getting some spare part you know this is like Mike coffen who’s just going to be here to kind of ride out the rest of the year type of thing like wallman’s good and he’s solves one of the biggest needs for the sharks so let’s dig into um kind of Jake wman and what he actually brings to to San Jose so wman 6’1 218 pounds to get two years left on his deal at $3.4 million with a 10 team node trade clause it sounds like the Sharks weren’t on his 10 team because there was no like he waved it there was none of that reporting with it like he was happy or not happy but the Sharks were not on his 10 team no trade we don’t know if maybe he had to update it on the F like there’s some stuff you know we don’t know what happens with the potential update but he’s you know he’s in San Jose but 10 team no trade so that gives you not a math guy but 21 other teams that he could be potentially traded to without any issues um last year he played 63 games had 12 goals nine assists with 108 shots on goal average time on Ice was 1946 cory4 45.4 4 five goals for 47.443840 hocky moider and Jake Walman basically got no offensive zone starts and we’re facing some of the toughest lineup or toughest matchups in the NHL um just absolutely like brutal deployment so um something just kind of keep in mind especially when we look at like kind of the rest of his Zone charts and all this other stuff he’s kind of put behind the eightball constantly constantly um in favor of you know trying to get maybe like Simon Edinson good Zone starts Shane gosar got a bunch of good Zone starts like trying to get some of those guys better Zone starts Walman got he got a rough rough deployment so um looking at his uh chart from evolving hockey 27 percentile player kind of playing between second PA and first pair minutes 75 71st excuse me percentile offensively fourth def defense percentile defensively but again keep in mind dude uh dude was getting getting tough tough deployment so um played some kind of second unit power play played a ton of of short-handed minutes as well I would expect him to be as of right now at least until Muk Madan is ready to take over the role I would expect wman to be the the quarterback one on the power play right now um looking at at his kind of Zone exit so um all Cory Schneider from all three zones does a great job with this and it’s a little bit kind of all over the map but the things that he does well are one zone entries uh wallman’s Zone entries um controlled Zone entries getting the puck in per 60 like doesn’t do it often when he does he’s really good at it um defensive Zone touches per 60 um retrievals 60 um like he does a really good job of just getting the puck out of the Zone struggles with it sometimes but I think that’s also with again looking at the deployment and kind of where where he finished up or like where he was starting but um wman is a good Puck mover and that is something the Sharks really really need more of and I think wman is going to help solve that problem for the Sharks does um offensively we’ll you know we’ll see here I think again hopefully with a little bit better deployment uh with San Jose you can potentially see that go up but um I think wman helps you solve one of your biggest issues with just getting the puck out of out of the Zone time you know kind of shift by shift so um and then looking at his J fresh card so 68 percentile War so that’s wins above replacement um kind of determining your impact and stuff um even strength offense 65th pertile even stri defense 58th percentile finishing 85 percentile goals 99 percentile um maybe not as much with the first assist uh but again that competition 100% like just facing brutal competition um night in and night out so um I’m super super stoked for for this trade uh I again one you got not only do you get like a player who’s like very useful to you and can hold out kind of be a bit of a bridge player while you wait for you know like while Muka Mulan Gets Ready Henry thrun continues his development Ty emberson like while some of these young guys kind of you know continue their development you also got a second round pick out of it um and gave up literally nothing like nothing you the yeah like that that this is the end of the like the Sharks maybe the Sharks owe the Red Wings a favor somewhere maybe this is kind of you know like how the the Red Wings uh the Rangers owe the Sharks a favor whatever it is and we’ll see what happens with the Red Wings and kind of what what their plan is for this um but like I had a lot of people like what’s the catch like there isn’t the Red Wings are trying to clear cap to make a Big Splash move which is what they’re they’re trying to do is they’re one of those teams that kind of needs to start winning now um so I expect them to make a big splash move whether it’s at the draft or free agency or whatever it is um but for for Greer you got a guy who’s two more years at a very reasonable cost at 3.4 million um you’re still $6 million away from hitting the cap floor so you’re plenty of money um and you solved one of you potentially solved one of your biggest needs um in finding a puck moving defenseman uh I still think you should be active in free agency to try to find another one and then that kind of really sets you up I think for for future success but getting a guy like wman who’s 28 he doesn’t turn 29 till um I think it’s February so Happ there was age 29 age3 season like this is a great great move by Mike G um just absolute just cleaning up and then adding another asset that gives you three picks in the second round so if you really do want to try to move up into the top 10 you have all the ammunition in the world right here with three second round picks um or if you want to go be aggressive and try to get a young player who maybe isn’t happy with where they’re at uh looking at you Winnipeg it just gives you more assets to be flexible and spend those to get NHL or soon to be NHL players move up in the draft uh or if you want to maybe go forward forward and we’ll talk about this strategy here in a little bit and then just shotgun approach the defensive by just picking three defenseman in those 30 those kind of bunch of 20 picks there and just see which one pans out you can do that as well so love this move um Absolut like I’m still waiting for the other shoe to drop here um but just an absolute killer move by Big Money Mike so uh we’ll look at now how my career is going to be able to spend these picks by looking at the draft uh so we’re gonna look at first at Bob McKenzie’s top 20 list see who the Sharks could potentially Target of course we know Maan CBR is number one but of course looking at the number 14 pick um kind of rinding out the top 20 so we’ll get to that here in just one minute and drive and patience the formula for winning championships is released his final draft ranking list so you’re new to the draft or don’t know who Bob Mackenzie is or you just want a nice refresher Bob McKenzie um basically the way he generates his list is he talks to a bunch of NHL Scouts and has them Rank and then he compiles all that um and gets a ranking from there so this ranking the reason why this one’s so important is because you’re getting input from NHL Scouts and kind of getting where their their heads are at so so this is that’s kind of why it’s such a a a huge deal it’s not just you know um you know our our friends like Tony Ferrari and you know Hattie and Sebastian and everybody else who’s been on the podcast they do a great job you know making their list and they they put in a lot of work but with Bob McKenzie though you’re getting actual NHL Scouts who are going to be in this process and making uh the draft picks here this week so that that’s kind of why this list is such an important list because it gives you a true sense of where they kind of project these guys to go so uh let’s start by looking at the top 20 here uh so of course know and I if you’re watching on YouTube I kind of highlighted the Sharks pick so you can kind of see who who would be if it went chock to McKenzie’s list kind of who would be there so number one of course is Mel brini Nob Briner we all know this it’s ma celebrini um it’s yeah it’s basically now just what number is ma celebrini going to wear so number two is Ian demidov which is interesting right because of course you know it feels like it’s going to be probably one of it’s demidov or or leov I think is for the kind of the picks for for Chicago but you know of course we know about mat mitchoff everyone was worried about him look how that turned out right he’s coming over he got have his contract earlier and he’s coming over um to play in the NHL this year for the Flyers like we overblow that um Russian Factor so demov and Bard together is ridiculously scary so but leov who is the top ranking defenseman Anon silv uh the very big Russian defenseman is uh at number four ktie Lindstrom at number five Sam Dickinson Z buam at seven uh Zane perek at eight CA helenius at n and te ainla at 10 I know we’ve seen a lot of mock drafts with ainla up in that four five area we’ll also see what at four what Columbus actually does they don’t really need a defenseman right they’re they have they’ve invested a lot in the defense um recently and I still think they’ll probably go forward there so again it’s not a mock draft it’s just rankings here kind of how he ranks them so um ainla kind of being at 10 just something to keep an eye on there especially if demidov does go early at two um does Lindstrom go number four then kind of what happens with Montreal or is Montreal maybe yeah because they’ve got a few defenseman as well they’re kind of an interesting candidate of what they do if the board kind of breaks one way or another so um next 11 through 20 back at senica of course the late Riser up at number 11 Berkeley katton um number 12 who’s super skilled little small Carter yakimchuk at number 13 so if you’re looking for defenseman yakam feels like like the last guy of that top six kind of tier number 14 Cole Eiserman uh 15 Trevor connley 16 Adam eek 17 Michael Brans seg Ard uh 18 Liam greenre 19 Jet lenko and 20 Sten Solberg so that is kind of rounding outs the top 20 right there um I know Connelly is he Bob Mackenzie mentioned this article a lot of guy a lot of teams just don’t have Conley on their board because of the Red Flags uh from his past um I don’t foresee the Sharks picking Conley just because of right we hear that character compete character compete character compete Conley definitely has the compete part but the character I don’t know if maybe that fits into what my career is trying to build right now um so you know I I don’t I don’t foresee the Sharks being in on Conley um I could see a team I I’ve said before like Vegas who just kind of doesn’t really care um but when you only have one pick right you traded last year’s pick to the Sharks you have your pick this year you don’t have a pick next year you don’t have a pick the following year I could see them taking a swing on a guy like Conley who would if he hits he’s going to be really good um and they don’t really care about the pr backlash because they just they’re very Cutthroat with with that type with just the way they operate so um your check is interesting because of you know the injury right um and there’s a lot of stuff he still needs to work out but if he hits he’s potentially could be one of the best defens in this class um you know I could see maybe a guy like knard as well for the sharks um with his just allaround game and how he’s just kind of a nice like line filler of whatever you need like cool I can do that for you um jet Linko we talked about recently U Li Green Tree um green tree is kind of like in the Sena mold where you know kind big guy who’s who’s kind of figuring things out but there’s a ton of potential there um and soberg who I know a lot of sharks fans are kind of pening as well um I’m like I I see the soberg pick I could I could Envision why I just I I worry about the offensive upside and I know people are gonna be like well he really good at defense but when you’re picking this High I want a guy who can do both if that’s too much to ask um so that’s kind of why why I’m a little worried about soberg so but for Eiserman you know the guy who who Bob Mackenzie currently like has in that number 14 slot he’s if you’re picking M celebrini who you feel you’re gonna hit a home run with right Cole Eiserman gives you a guy like Eiserman where there’s definitely a path for him to be awesome and there’s definitely a path for him to never kind of play meaningful NH show games um so you could see why a swing there because you have a little bit of room for error especially with celebrating and then with potentially three second round picks um Eiserman who has the best shot in the class but needs to work out on everything else in this game and if he’s able to do that you could be you know like looking at just an absolute sniper to pair with Maan celebrini who can kind of create offense and then just get it over to Eiserman who two are really good friends um and Eiserman going into this year was considered the second best player in the draft before kind of this year happen he still scored a pillion points um and I think spending time in college which he’s going to do next year is going to be the best thing for his game so um you could really talk me into to Cole Eiserman at 14 and just be like yeah we’re good we’re our offense is just going to be really good um with CBR Will Smith down down the middle so and then iserman on one of the Wings you could put Eiserman on One Wing and then you could have Casper hton in on another Wing oh man that’s really fun so uh we’ll get here into the you know kind of looking at at the Players around the Sharks picks in the second round um and kind of get to know some of these guys and get to know kind of the guys that that Bob Mackenzie kind of has I want say mocked but just has in those slots we’ll get to that here uh in just one second if you want to go get tickets for concert you want to go catch a baseball game or whatever you’re doing your first purchase terms apply again create an account and redeem code locked on NHL for $20 off download game time today last minute tickets lowest price guaranteed all right uh let’s get into some targets I guess we’ll call it for the sharks at 3342 and 53 here so um at 30 so kind of looking at the kind of the bunch here 29 through 36 you have Dominic badinka who I really really like um you know I think he kind of fits with the sharks are trying to build Andrew basa rder Richie Sam O’Reilly Charlie elck Eli is a a big six foot three defenseman um maybe not known as much for his offensive game but he definitely has the like transition ability um and getting that puck out of the Zone um I know he’s a ranked a little bit higher um in in evolving hock not evolving hockey sorry Elite prospects um great skater is able to shut things down defensively non-stop motor um and kind of that shutdown potential Defender there um so he’s a guy who kind of fits the Mig Greer build especially being 6 foot three um he’s already basically 200 pounds uh right-handed and um yeah I think that would be somebody that San Jose would be very interested in um at 33 if he gets there um you have a couple Russians here and eigor Surin Nikita timov and then um Dean lrer who I’m terrible at pronouncing his last name so again if you kind of go forward forward there’s a huge pocket of defenseman here in the kind of the beginning of the second round where you can kind of you know just pick a bunch of them and see who really pans out for you so um I do really like Eli I think he’s fits that mold now a lot of these guys in this era in this era uh this range I guess really fit what I I think Mike career is looking for in that big um physical tough to play against um a type of molight if elix there it’s going to be yeah I think he’s he’s somebody that that San Jose would definitely look hard at so um next kind of group so um between 37 and 44 Matt fake greeting um Jessie pin pinan excuse me uh who’s an over AER big dude he’s like 66 I think or something like that uh Maxim M uh from the Q probably the high I think I think he’s the highest ranked H guy Lucas Peterson who’s the high they have as the highest ranked swed alons fry who I know uh the analytics darling that were all potentially interested and then Leo Solin wall wallness who they would be in that 42 slot uh Teddy sta who I absolutely love um and if he’s there on the board he just again kind of Gavin Brinley 2.0 feel to him where he’s just like a pest um and he’s just like a tryhard guy but he’s I think he’s one of those if he’s on your team you love him and if you have to play against him you freaking hate that dude uh and then lonus Erikson um who as well so for Leo suin while uh wenus um I know he’s a little bit lower ranked on Elite prospects um guide um what so he’s also kind of fits too what what the shark is he’s more of a transition guy um like not as big 6’1 183 uh left-handed Mass yeah sound Puck distributor and inzone Defender with projectable NHL caliber tools reliable and consistent is kind of their elevator pitch um the offensive game isn’t as what you would expect kind of especially seeing the tools is kind of what they they say um but he’s very good at getting the puck moving and kind of getting that transition going uh which again I think is something that the sharks are continually looking to to add add those type of pieces is can you how do you play in the neutral zone um etc etc so um alons fry it’s good to see you know we talked to will last uh was it last week or whatever um and there was talk of him potentially going like third round alons FR is gonna be right looks like he’s going to be right in the kind of strike zone for the Sharks here and um especially if they go forward forward I would 100% take a swing on alons Fry because uh that dude just he sounds like could be that guy where we’re just like how did he fall type of guy so or how did he make it how was he available in the second round so um and yeah that’s can play defense and provide offense as well um and he’s yeah that’s good to see he’s in that uh in that that that Strike Zone there so uh and then looking at the final kind of guys here Matt sherev sorry uh Russian um Adam Cleber Aon kavari sorry H Spencer Gil Ben dadford Gabriel Elias uh Leon mugil uh Mugi and jacobia man I’m screwed up those my bad Spencer gill who the again is in that 53 slot so um C Defender physical toolsy type of guy going to need definitely raw going to need some some time but again that that six foot three uh mold of of him who you give him some time you let him kind of stay over in the queue um he’s on a really good team for kind of developing players um you know a physical imposing defenseman who flashes impressive playmaking and scoring abilities with every uh uh abilities every other game he’s in the best development for players of his type in the qmjhl um he’s on a good team that’s kind of knows what to do with these rangy toolsy guys so um definitely you know don’t expect him to make an impact right away but you’re GNA kind of take the shotgun approach of it and just you know pick a bunch of them that’s the type of pick where you let him marinate he there’s no rush for him doesn’t need to and then you just kind of see what happens in the next couple of of Seasons so um the Aon kavar sorry finish um he’s an interesting guy because of the injury um kind of like your che where he missed so much time this year where it was hard to kind of get a judge on him and he was considered to be a potential firstr Talent um so if you again kind of with so many picks you can take a swing on a guy like that and just let him marinate and then hope see if he’s turns in you know kind of hits his upside you could be looking at a potential steal there so um yeah I mean it’s the sharks have so much flexibility here now with five picks in the first 53 um where they want to move up they can do that um if they want to trade back they can do that as well if they want to be aggressive and go get NHL caliber players or like if they want to trade the picks for NHL players you can do that young NHL players don’t go trading for like old dudes but um like you have so much flexibility after the this Wallman trade um and just more ammo to go do something else um if you want to go have two top 10 picks trade two of those second round picks up and then uh do that or if you want to use one of those second round picks and move back and later in the second round early third round because maybe you feel like you got a pocket of players there that you really like then you get some more assets like micer the is micer the world is mic’s oyster right now um and we’re just living in it because yeah he just he can do whatever he wants right now with with the the stuff that he has plus you’re getting backin celebrity like I cannot emphasize how good Maan celebra is going to be so um that’s going to be it for me to day we’ll continue with more draft stuff um see if we have any moves or announcements I’m traveling tomorrow to Vegas so tomorrow show will be from Vegas um in my hotel room there but uh so if anything happens while I’m on the plane or whatever like I’m all sharks basically for the next couple days here so U make sure you follow along on YouTube um we’re going to have plenty of good content coming on there especially draft day we’ll have like instant reactions we have a bunch of good stuff coming over over there so make sure you follow along on YouTube I’m re getting really close to I think I’m like a 100 subscribers away from 3,000 so um you haven’t subscribed now’s the perfect time to get in on that um because again bunch of of stuff coming out over there um on YouTube of course you can listen to podcast wherever you want uh wherever you get Podcast we’ll have breakdowns and reactions as well um on on your podcast feed follow the show on Twitter Facebook and Instagram um especially on Instagram we’ll have plenty of stuff behind the scenes stuff pictures from the draft all that fun stuff will be up on Instagram um you can follow me on Twitter at my fry hole till tomorrow bye friends [Music]

  1. Yzerman must be pretty confident in Edvinsson’s development to let go of Walman.

Funny that one of the prospective has a name so similar to Stevie Y’s.
