San Jose Sharks Trade Up And Ship Out Kyle Burroughs For Carl Grundström
the sharks with a busy morning trading up in the draft and trading with the Rival LA Kings you’re locked on sharks your daily podcast on the San Jose Sharks part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day hello welcome to locked on sharks the premier hockey podcast covering your favorite team in the Bay Area my name name is JD young caretaker at The Reef also co-host of Western everyday all you have to do is just follow wherever you get Podcast or you can watch this on YouTube as well and we’re gonna have a little bit of a mini podcast as we have some kind of big news here so expect this about 15 minutes or so uh but just you know I’m here in Vegas covering the Sharks right now and the sharks have been very busy within five minutes trading up uh to pick number 11 before the draft H and then also trading Kyle Burrough to the Kings for RFA Carl grundstrom so we’ll talk about the draft pick what this kind of means what this potentially sets up for my career but I’m thinking the sharks are kind of looking at here and then we’ll talk about why Kyle Bros got traded and what grundstrom potentially brings to the shark so before we get to all that do want to let you guys know that today’s episode is brought to you by Game Time download the game time app create an account and use code locked on NHL for $20 off your first purchase terms apply again we are in Vegas right now um it’s really hot that’s my uh Vegas report it’s very hot and as someone who lives in Fresno it’s very hot here so but the sharks move up to number 11 by trading uh we’ll pull up the uh big board here trading away pick number 14 and pick number 42 uh to the Buffalo Sabers for pick number 11 um I I expect my Greer has someone someone or a couple guys targeted here uh whether it’s yakam chuk or perk or whomever I think he wanted to it it’s very it felt very much like the Flyers were kind of the last team that could be looking at defenseman and he wanted to get up to get one of those top six defenseman um and I know you know people some people were like why did you give up all that and stuff again like you have three second round picks that you have right you have 33 um you had 42 and 53 like packaging that’s that gives you you flexibility to move up and especially if you feel like a guy you really like is going to be there um or if you think maybe somebody might fall because other guys get pushed up the Sharks ear in a wonderful spot here at number 11 to go get go get a potential kind of like Blue Chip player which I’ve said all off season like kind of advocating for them to try to trade up you need quality at this point you have PL plenty of of of guys in the draft in the prospect pool but you need you need difference makers right celebr is a Difference Maker Will Smith’s A Difference Maker you know we hope Quinton mus is going to be a Difference Maker can they find a a piece on the blue line who you think can be a difference making blue uh player and I think that’s where they’re going to go with this um The Hope is that you now put yourself firmly in range um where you can get one of those top six defenseman and not have to kind of play the waiting game um you you should be there and whether it’s zanen perek uh Z don’t think we’ll be there but you know Carter yakimchuk who I think is probably the guy if I had to guess um like they’re the sharks are going to be in a great position to try to grab one of those or you get a tja ginla or brookley Kat and potentially fall to you because maybe somebody gets pushed up in the the defense run um no matter what the sharks are going to be in a great spot to to select um one of these defenseman that or a really great player and you’re not kind of having to play the the waiting game and you jump up over a couple teams here so um yeah or or this is just a stepping stone uh as Mike GRE maybe he becomes really aggressive and tries to move further in into the top 10 you know um I don’t know what Utah’s doing I don’t know what you know um Montreal I think Montreal is picking demov if he’s there um you don’t know what the SS are doing like maybe you move on from a player in a pick to move up into the top 10 and really get yourself then you get yourself in the Z buam Sam Dickinson type of territory there uh with one of those picks so um yeah really it’s going to be fun I’m I’m super excited to see what happens of course be at the draft uh we will have videos from your new sharks players you get to see all their uh you know kind of introductory uh availability we’ll have all that stuff here at lockon sharks uh so yeah it’s it’s gonna be good but um let’s move on to the of course calbero uh trade to uh the LA Kings for Carl grundstrom so U pulling up the board here so yes one for one trade uh KY brough who has uh two years left three years left on his uh deal at 1.1 million for Carl grundstrom um who is an RFA um burough sorry excuse me buros has two years left on his deal at 1.1 always him and Matt Benny in the year always get always get mixed up so don’t worry about that anymore but um this clears up part of the log gymm right um for the Sharks that’s why they traded traded Kyle burough who was okay last year um you know brought some toughness um stood up for the kids all that fun stuff but you know I think was the Sharks just have so many of these like same type of guys on the blue line and they’re kind of getting doing the same thing on the forward line but we’ll get to that here in a minute but um for the Sharks here getting moving off from buros you know you just got um wman in I think the sharks are still going to try to add another defensive piece whether that’s a big swing for you know potential guy like uh maybe if trouba becomes available and the sharks are you know want to get get him for a potential another cap dump is type of player but I think he Stills positive value in GM’s eyes uh or if they want to go try to find another defenseman and free agency um as they remake this blue line here which was among if not the worst Blue Line in the uh entire NHL last year um I I think for buroughs for the Kings actually to be honest it allows them to um you know they’re they’re going to be losing some pieces here it gives them a cheap option that were maybe a better structure in La um they can you know kind of get a little bit more out of burrows but a cheap option it’s you know they’re they’re losing some pieces here and they have some other guys that they have to pay like Quinton beld etc etc um gives them I think some flexibility you know as they kind of fifth sixth seventh defenseman um there so but yeah we’ll we’ll talk more about grundstrom here and kind of what the sharks are getting out of him um here in a second so you know kind of dig into what his usage his analytics and kind of my thoughts on him and what the sharks are kind of doing here with some of some of the players they’ve added over the past week to be honest so uh we’ll get to that here in just one second it’s summer which means baseball season and if you want to get tickets to go catch an MLB game or go see a concert this summer or comedy show or whatever you today I tickets lowest price guaranteed all right uh we are back in Vegas don’t have my full like normal setup so like things are a little shaky and stuff I apologize um you know we’re we’re you can only fit so much stuff on the carryon so um but anyway let’s let’s dig into Carl grundstrom and what what the sharks are getting uh with him so last year um he played 50 games for the Kings he’s six foot 195 pound forward left-handed shot playing right wing um he had eight goals four assists 95 shots on goal average a little under 11 minutes of uh time on Ice Cory 4 55.3 Six GS 4 43.2 four so when he was was on the ice the Kings had 55% of the shot attempts uh and when he was on the ice the Kings also scored 43% of the goals um so where what is like grundstrom kind of where where does he fit in here so um playing mostly third fourth line minutes 19th percentile player 20th percentile offense 34 percentile defense um doesn’t really do it’s mostly five on five like he’s not getting power play opportunities very little short-handed um uh opportunity or short-handed like penalty kill time so looking at J Fresh’s card he’s a 50% 56% projected War uh that’s winds above replacement uh so that’s kind of how they look at how much above a replacement level player you add um 65% even strength offense 70th percentile goals doesn’t really pass too much um solid in there um but really easy competition which we’ll get to here in just a second so um struggle again with the passing doesn’t really create much for his team um but when he’s on the ice they they the offense does do well if that makes sense so he’s not like a he’s not a guy who’s kind of I don’t want to say lifting he’s not kind of passing and and making life easier for his teammates but he’s a really good four Checker um decent at getting the puck out of his own Zone uh like go getting the puck out of his own Zone and kind of getting it going um and is a pretty good shooter as well so um but something to keep in mind is his usage so he had super easy uh deployments and a lot of offensive time against really low qual competition uh which kind of makes sense for this third fourth line you know he’s he’s facing that type of of player so it’s an interesting move especially when you look at kind of recently the the the pieces that the sharks have just added you know um they just traded for for Tai delandria um you know they and they also just traded for uh what’s his name um Igor AFV um you know kind of both in very similar mix and roles where you know kind of bottom six type of guys with side and a little bit of skill um you know good four Checkers like kind of the a lot of these same type of of players here so I’m just thinking out loud just thinking out loud posing what if this was kind of a salary dump or player dump by the Sharks where they gave burough who has some potential value to the Kings right uh again I kind of you know the Kings need to maybe have some cheap options uh and they hope in their system he you know burs is probably a better fit but grundstrom what if the Sharks just you know he is an RFA they could just let him walk and this opens up I mean the cap space isn’t really too much as $ 1.1 million um but it opens up the log helps open up the Log Jam um for the Sharks right and if you look at their defensive core right now you have vasic who’s not going anywhere um Jake wman who they just acquired Mario feraro who there is some trade rumors but until something happens I’m just going to assume Mario feraro is here Yan Ruda who’s got one year left on his deal Nikolai kov who’s probably gonna be back in the AHL next year um kayin Addison who the sharks are not gonna you know uh qualify Henry thrun who will be back um Jake McDonald who won’t you know most likely won’t be back uh Matt Benny who’s coming off a hip injury and Ty Emerson who’s coming off injuries but be back so you have a kind of a lot of pieces there and you’re I think you’re still trying to kind of you need a guy who can be a potential number one so um I think for this move you’re kind of looking at at a potential if if the trucks do let grundstrom walk but um especially because you’ve added some other pieces I you know you’re really you’re helping to open up the Log Jam for the defense and you’re adding another guy kind of in the mix there and you know maybe this helps to push grun who did played 50 NHL games last year but um with the qualifying offer low qualifying offer maybe you can potentially try to sneak him in the AHL um you know or you have a couple guys here you’re going to have to potentially try to sneak in the AHL between delandria um who’s 23 and is no longer waivers exempt um grundstrom who’s a little bit older and also the great side note the great thing about grundstrom is now I can use my metal voice and go grundstrom anytime I talk about him uh because if he was not a hockey player he’s 1 million per in a Swedish metal ban uh but anyway back to you know so you have e AFV who’s an RFA but also not waivers exempt um so you wonder if they maybe kind of look at some of these guys as potential Barracuda reinforcements as that team does need some veteran type of players down there um and so I’m or maybe they M career just brings them all to camp and lets them kind of fight it out and see who can kind of take a job there and especially if you’re looking at NCO Sturm Barkley good um you know and then like the you know the Luke cunnins tidal Andreas uh grundstrom off nvs colen graphs of the world and kind of who can can kind of grab a job there so um yeah you know interesting trade and we’ll see what what this kind of brings for the Sharks again I’m kind of curious to see if they do qualify them I expect they will but there’s also a part of me that just thinking out loud like what if they don’t um so yeah we’ll be back um later tonight tomorrow with uh kind of my my pound the table guys which I’m have to now kind of readjust a little bit uh so guys who if they’re there at 11 or 33 guys who I’m like pounding the table that you got to you need to draft this guy so the guys I really think um I would be very very excited for if the Sharks try to grab so um and we’re going to be looking at realistic options like Z boam is not going to be there at 11 but there’s definitely going to be some other guys who have a realistic shot of being there at 11 so uh we’ll do that so and then of course draft day we’ll have live reactions from um the sphere we’ll have after each pick um we’ll do a full recap as well you’ll get player availability like plenty of content coming from the content boy so um that’s going to be it for me right now I’m going to go hang out at the pool or do something right now uh and enjoy the rest of the day and have something ready for you guys tonight so um yeah make sure you guys are are back later um for for more draft stuff uh make sure you’re following wherever you get Podcast and of course you can watch on YouTube as well um follow show on Twitter Facebook and Instagram at lockon sharks follow me on Twitter at my fry hole until tomorrow bye friends [Music]
Mike Grier has been active in Las Vegas as the San Jose Sharks made two trades before the National Hockey League’s annual draft. The Sharks move up the draft board by sending 14 and 42 to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for number 11. What does this mean for the Sharks pursuing a top-flight defenseman in the draft? Then, the Sharks send defenseman Kyle Burroughs to the LA Kings in exchange for forward Carl Grunderström. Why did the Sharks ship out Burroughs after one season, and what will Grunderström bring to San Jose?

100% Ok with giving up the 42nd, that actually seems like a cheap price to give yourself a significantly better shot at one of the big dmen.
I feel like we might make another move with this pick to get into thr top 6 or 7 I imagine Grier really wants one of Silayev, Dickinson, Parekh or Buium
Fellow shark spam from Fresno. I'm from Exeter small world
I wonder if the draft pick swap has to do with the "future considerations" in the Jake Walman trade. Perhaps they had some preliminary discussions with Buffalo, and Detroit gets to trade up to #11 if the player they really want is still available.
I really don't think Grier is done. I think he wants Buium, Parekh or Levshunov if he drops.
I would not be surprised if Grundstrom doesn't get a QO. I think this move was just to make D space for a UFA. (ah…you said it right after I typed it)
I hope we’re able to give Guschin and Bordealue a fair shake this season
I hope with the 11th pick the sharks can get into the top 6-9 to grab Buium/Parekh. Not a fan of Yakemchuk and if the Sharks stay at 11 I would actually prefer them taking Catton/Helenius/Senneke if the top 5 D are gone by then
Keep it metal, JD.
Everyone in the comments is saying what I was going to say, and JD said it too.. I (also) think Grier might trade pick 11 and one of the 2nd round picks to get up to pick 5-8. What D-man do you think Grier is really targeting? He obviously has 1 or 2 specifically in mind to move up to #11.
Oh puckkkkk yessss 🤩🥳
With this up trade, Grier better select Eiserman… Eiserman and Will smith already know how to play together and Celebrini and Eiserman are good friends… it makes 100% sense, so that means Grier wont pick him if available… He traded up right into the money zone of Eiserman, Catton, Konsta and Senneke and he needs to pick one of those 4. Trading up to grab Yakemchuk is a terrible terrible plan – so thats likely what Griers target is.
Really love the attitude of Jacob MacDonald, he would be one of the big misses for me personally, because he's got that positive vibe to him and will play forward (not even bad either) he's got that plumber mindset. I miss Scott Harrington also, who landed on the Ducks after being dropped in the Timo trade? That guy had such a pro mindset!
Maybe trade a player to get another second rounder than trade pick 53 and 11 for 8 or 7
Could be moving up more, or looking to lock in 1 or 2 guys around this area in the draft, possible defencemen or maybe even Eiserman . I know buffalo or Minnesota would really like to have him
Sharks need to try to move up to #6/7/#8. Trade #11, next year's 1st round from Vegas and this years #33 to get #6 or #7 and for #8 2nd rd pick from TBL vs #33. If there were any takers, Buium/Dickenson or Silayev. Silayev would be ideal and then next year 1st round pick which will likely be top 3/4, draft their #1 D-man. Silayev is a mean, defensive d-man who will ruin other players. They better not draft another forward, especially one-dimensional, lazy Eiserman, who they could have got at 13/14/15 or maybe even 16. There's a reason Eiserman has dropped so far this year.
