free agency uh as free agency starts at 9:00 a.m. Pacific time on Monday morning uh so get rest up sharks fans because we going to be right back on the grind on Monday morning um so today we’re goingon to be talking about some of kind of the roster moves that the sharks have made including bringing back a couple veterans uh terminating a NOA fan favorite and sharks giving out some qualified offers to players and kind of looking at where the roster resets and I think the areas that mik career is going to to try to attack and free agencies so before we get to all that do want to let you guys know that today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel make every moment more as the playoffs are now done the Sports Stop sporting like we want them to but this summer FanDuel is still hooking up all customers with a boost or a bonus daily that’s right there’s something for everyone every day all summer long so visit fanduel.com locked on to get started so finally back back home ready to sleep in my own bed tonight um hope you guys enjoyed the draft coverage I I feel like I did a pretty solid job um had a blast doing it but um we’ll have more this week especially with uh we got Dev Camp I’ll be at the dev Camp game so we’ll get more on kind of the players and and all that fun stuff uh so make sure you guys are follow along for that but we’re got to start with a couple signings the sharks made so the sharks of course uh we’ll start with the the big one dollar wise and that is Luke cunan uh who is brought back on a one-year deal at $2.75 million um rip the Luke C for one year at $10 million to get um to the cap floor um so cun in I mean on this podcast I’ve kind of you know had made my my my thoughts on on Luke cunan um but you know he seems like a micer type of player um they want to add some more depth and especially to the bottom six um and cunan I think hopefully not having to play second line Center minutes this season you know will probably fit more into that role um especially we’ll get to the kind of the roster breakdown but I think though for this was a good deal is actually below his qualifying offer which was uh $3 million um you know so saved a little bit of money but I also think the sets up for cunan to be a trade asset this upcoming season um for the shark CI there was talk of maybe doing a longer deal um cunan will be in a UFA after this season so he’ll be able to sign wherever he wants to um if he wants to come back to the sharks they could do that but I assume cunan will probably look for greener pastures um but this does set up for Luke cunan to be a potential trade piece for these sharks um going in to the trade deadline as the sharks are probably still going to be uh looking to move assets especially U because their draft Capital next year spoiler not that great right now I know the Sharks do have two first round picks um they have a second round pick and then they have a fourth and a seventh owned by the devil so the Sharks definitely will need to look to restock the draft capital and that’ll be something that they’ll work on throughout the uh um throughout the season like don’t worry about it now but just want to let you kind of something to think about but I do think cunan will be a attractive trade piece for teams looking to add some um kind of a little bit of scoring touch at the bottom six and um defensive you know we know what kind of does so another move of course the Sharks uh resign Justin Bailey Bailey’s a great story kind of was you know playing in the AHL last couple Seasons um invited to the Sharks as a PTO earns his NHL contract um started the season with a barracuda and came up to the Sharks and basically stayed up the rest of the year so um he was signed to a oneyear deal I’ve seen 775 I’ve seen 800 doesn’t really matter uh 800,000 but we’ll just go with $800,000 deal it’s a two-way deal so just is a friendly reminder two-way deal does not mean he is waivers except Justin Billy will still need to pass to waivers um basically just kind of goes with how much he gets paid if he’s in the AHL he gets a gets paid more during the AHL so it’s kind of a contract negotiation thing um for him so uh with Bailey though like I think the hope is he can spend the more of the season in the AHL um where I mean he had a really really he was oddly enough even as a PTO he was one of the better sharks veterans and I think the Barracuda really missed his scoring touch um this season so um hope for him is he can you know I’m sure he’ll be one of the guys that we we talk about as the roster uh battle guys going into the summer but you know assuming any clearest waivers being kind of a you know one of the top six for the Barracuda especially with bed and you know Cardwell and some of the other guys that that they’re going to have I think bayy can is going to have a strong season with the Barracuda and then if the Sharks need him to come up and kind of pinch you know pitch in here once in a while um really solid signing I think to to bring him back because uh I think especially again for a guy who hadn’t scored in the NHL in you know several years kind of had a really really kind of nice C kind of bounceback nice campaign for for the sharks um it was a big contributor for them so but that bottom six is uh very going to be very very competitive that’s going to be one of the things we’re going to track this summer is you know how to the Sharks kind of sift through this bottom six here so and then of course um Nikolai kov had his contract terminated so he was put on waivers on Saturday um with the potential of a buyout if the Sharks had bought him out that would have been a really minimal cap hit this year and then a little bit one bigger one next year but uh apparently he just agreed to a termination so these sharks are actually uh off the hook for any cap casualties for kov so um interesting little bit interesting there so yeah he would have had a $316,000 capit this year and a 400 like little basically under 500,000 or 500 yeah a $500,000 cap hit um next season but since he agreed to a termination he is off the books um he will be you know best of luck to him um one of those guys where you’re probably you know very much a what if if he doesn’t lose basically two years of his career because of injuries and dealing with infections and stuff um good of the Sharks to kind of give him that you know contract that you know as a good job you know we believe in you type of of support but um hopefully he’s able to latch on another team if not I could see him you know maybe heading to Europe or heading to to Russia to go play um there as well um but you know it just it’s definitely definitely s that he wasn’t able to kind of refind you know that what we saw from him as a rookie season where it looked like he had a potential to really kind of carve out a a bottom pairing type of role for the Sharks and um quickly earned himself as a as a fan favorite especially um that L there’s that image of of him getting to a fight and it’s like in a black and white photo and is there’s like blood all over his shield and just kind of coming you know coming off the ice that’s just this image of him I’ll kind of never foret get um of him during that weird bubble season um but yeah best of luck to to kov um I think for both they were probably just looking for you know sharks kind of get off a contract here um just to not that they it’s not the space it’s the contract numbers as they try to fill their roster both in the NHL and the AHL um kind of get off that Rost that contract there and then for kov hopefully getting a fresh start where especially when looking at the the defensive numbers here uh Kia definitely kind of more of the odd man out so hopefully gets a fresh start somewhere gets a chance to to compete for an NHL job um but you know I think it was kind of the writing was definitely on the wall especially after last year when he was the the first guy to kind of be waved um and sent down to the Barracuda and really didn’t get a chance to to earn his spot back in the NHL next year so um we’ll look at some of the qualified players and players who these sharks let to go to free agency here in just one [Music] second I love sports I love them so much I never want to stop talking about them or want them to stop but with the playoffs done we have fewer games now and the sports aren’t sportsing like I want them to but fandel lets me keep the sports going whenever I want all I have to do is open the app and dream up big bets anytime I’m in the mood this summer FanDuel is hooking up all customers with a boost or a bonus daily that’s right there something for everyone every day all summer long so head over to fanduel.com lockon and start making the most out of your summer FanDuel official Sports partner of Major League Baseball all right uh as we continue to kind of dig into the news and notes uh these sharks had issued qualifying offers so as a quick kind of rundown and reminder so qualifying offers for rfas um so restricted free agents uh basically they give these guys offers as say we’re going to kind of negotiate with you um for and to make sure we we get you a a contract here uh a lot of times the offers are pretty much set in stone um some guys though kind of can earned arbitration rights uh so guys like Henry thrun Thomas bordalo um those guys are basically like here’s the number this this is what you’re going to get so um like for uh Thomas Boro his qualifying offer is going to be both those guys we’ll just R up to 900,000 for for each of those um title injur Carl grundstrom um Tai emberson uh who else was on the list Brandon Co um and eigor AEV these guys have all kind since they’ve played enough games um they can actually have arbitration basically Burks will give them a number they’ll say number they’ll if they don’t agree can actually take it to a judge uh or not a judge but they’ll kind of take it to I guess it is a judge and they’ll kind of decide okay how much is it going to uh get the contract actually be usually they they these type of things get kind of figured out beforehand so um but I think the more the bigger news out of this is the guys who did not get qualifying offers so Kellen Addison Jacob Peterson Jack Sika and Philip sadena were not issued qualifying offers and are now going to be unrestricted free agents so they are free to sign with anybody um as free agency starts so um we go we’ll just go alphabetically through these guys by last name Addison we all knew Mike R said we don’t expect um Jacob Peterson I could you know I think he did not have the season that we hope for him especially after what we saw when the Sharks traded for him um you know didn’t get much time in the NH and didn’t really have the season we you would kind of Hope where you would earn top six minutes on the Barracuda um so I can definitely see that especially with kind of the influx of talent um coming to the Barracuda you know I think definitely a numbers game and the sharks are probably want to try to be aggressive this season to sign some potential uh veteran type of guys to to help the Barracuda out um Jack sto yeah I think my career had also said we weren’t weren’t going to bring him back um I know the Sharks gave up a fourth round pick for him um and he didn’t really do too much but you have to also remember the Sharks had like no centers at the time and uh a fourth round pick is kind of the cost of doing business for a NHL a type of tweener that Jack sta is um and I mean you look at the title injury trade was also a fourth round pick that’s kind of the cost of business for for those uh types of Trades didn’t really establish himself and is goingon to become a free agent I think the Philip sadena one’s the most interesting of course uh sadino who kind of had his contract terminated with the Red Wings came to San Jose kind of bet on himself um and I I think he’s kind of stuck between uh a rock in a hard place with the sharks roster um because I think he’s a little bit too good I don’t know he doesn’t really fit a bottom six type of role that he played a lot this season but he’s just not a top six guy for especially for the Sharks and I think with the additions of Will Smith and MN celebrini on on San Jose this year um you’re going to like he just really doesn’t have a spot in San Jose and I think both teams you know both parties here tried to give him you know give an opportunity and you know he I think he played well for the Sharks uh this season kind of had one of his healthier season was was productive but um maybe get a a chance from Ral so he can you know kind of see if he can find figure something out so um but back to the guys who are uh expected to be here um you know I I I think all these guys with you know affas SV uh bordalo co delandre emberson grundstrom thrund co will be an AHL type of of guy and I think giving him another year um the rest of these guys are all going to be fighting for playoff or for roster spots you know office anov is and like kind of the office of delandria uh grundstrom like those are three guys who all kind of fighting for the same role here um emberson I think is a bit safer but depending on what the Sharks do going into free agency uh but you know thr’s gonna is gonna have some competition need to have a strong summer and strong Camp um to to kind of make us a spot and bordo I think is going to you know out of those guys is is one of the guys who needs to have a a monster summer because almost like Phillips Zena where he needs to be playing with skilled guys but is he skilled enough or can he do enough uh to to play with the top six type of of players so um I’m totally fine with bringing all these guys back I kind of wondered you especially with the um the grundstrom trade where the Sharks would kind of fit especially with Dandrea and goodro and aasv and like GRT like all these guys are kind of in the same tier or same vein of type excuse me type of players um where everyone’s gonna kind of fill in but I think though with giving up uh letting Philip Zaden go to free agency I think these guys have a maybe a better fit in the projected role uh for what Ryan wovi Mike Greer kind of looking to to put together here so um yeah also just as just keep in mind um the sharks can also kind of be like never mind and renounce their qualifying offers on these guys if maybe they feel like they’re not going to kind of get the role they want they want to kind of go do something else the sharks can also renounce their their qualifying offers another thing to keep in mind just in case I don’t expect this to happen but just just to kind of keep in mind um if any of these players go to arbitration which is kind of going to before a judge or I just call him a judge but I don’t know what it is before a third party where they kind of haggle over over the contract and each kind of makes their case of of what um if any of them go to arbitration a second buyout window does open up not that I think the sharks are going to use a buyout for any of you know but just something to keep sometimes um teams will do that where they’ll have a guy kind of purposely go to arbitration just to open up a second buyout um famously the Penguins kind of did this last year where they had I don’t remember the player but they had a player go to arbitration and then Mel granin was was looked to be as a potential bu out in that second buyout window of course uh he was then like immediately traded to the shark say part of the uh um Eric Carlson trade but just something to keep in mind as a second buyout does open up if there is an arbitration case so um and it’s right after the arbitration they kind of have like a big calendar and everybody like they’ll pencel them in and say okay your yours is you know August 3rd at 11:00 a. and then after that um there there’s a that’s when the arbitration window kind of opens up so uh we’ll next kind of do a roster reset as we’ve had a lot of moving pieces here kind of see what the sharks have see where they’re at with their cap um how much they need to spend just to get to the floor and kind of what I expect my career to do in free agency uh so we’ll get do that here in just one [Music] minute all right uh let’s bit of a roster reset so just as a reminder um roster size of 23 so the Sharks right now have 16 of 23 uh players that are currently up um on the NHL roster um this does not include M srini who has yet to sign his ELC but he’s gonna sign his ELC at some point um I would not be surprised if it’s later this week at development Camp um that’s just my guess uh but yeah celebrating is going to sign so um but as of right now so the Sharks do have 16 of 23 of their spots um and they have several players on ir and a bunch of capit so as of forwards right now Mel granin Barkley goodro uh these are in order of uh their cap hit um sorry let me also start L gor who’s on IR um Mel granin Barkley goodro Luke cunan CLE C Nico Sturm Fabian Zin Will Smith Colin graph William eckan Giovanni Smith Justin Bailey Thomas bordalo Ty delinger and Carl grundstrom all are on the uh or kind of on the Sharks uh cap right now of course Boro delandra and grundstrom still need deals uh like I said boro’s deal is going to be like 900,000 um delandria qualifying offer is like a million dollar so expect something like that to kind of come in um and then Carl grundstrom his con uh projected qualifying offer is at 1.3 so none of these guys are kind of you know breaking the bank here um so look for the Sharks to add I think in in this the Ford Department M has mentioned they want some scoring additions right um especially if you’re going to have Will Smith and William eckan you’re G or not uh Will Smith and mlin celebrating making their Pro debuts you’re going to need some some scoring here and I I think that’s going to be number one on the Sharks list is try to find uh some scoring Wingers to help out these top six guys here so um and Greer has said we want to kind of be in the one to four range when it comes to to years so I wonder especially with the sharks cap the way it is maybe the Sharks offer a shorter term deal but more money because of just kind of the way their cap situation is and maybe lets a guy go back to free agency a little bit sooner um but you know kind of pays them a little bit more to be here right now so I I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s that’s the kind of approach Mike career takes is spend some money now one to get to the C floor but two to get quality pieces um here to help some of these young guys so um yeah that that’s kind of where they are with with the forwards um as for the defense you have uh Mark Edward flasc who’s got two years left at his $7 million Jake wman two years left at $3.4 million uh Mario feraro at two years left at $3.25 million Yan Ruda one year left at 2.75 um and then you also have Matt Benny is going to be coming off IR he’s got two years left at 1.25 million uh and then Ty emberson and Henry thrund both those guys again their qualifying offers are uh Ty Emerson’s qualifying offer is at uh one 83,000 so basically yeah eight vet Min kind of a minimum deal right there uh for him same thing for again for Henry thren his qualifying offer is going to be 874 so none of these guys going to break the bank um so that kind of puts you at uh one two three four five six seven defenseman Henry TR is still waivers exempt so with two yeah two righties and emberson and Benny and everybody else on the left left-handed guys I would expect expect um the Sharks to try to find another kind of Puck moving defenseman yes you have Shakir mukad Dulan kind of who’s going to be you know vying for a position here but I think though trying to find another right-handed defenseman and then if mukad can kind of battle for position and if you need to kind of you know there there’s some options that you have you could maybe if Matt Benny’s not fully Healthy Start him on IR um or potentially try to kind of push him down to the um down to the Barracuda where could bury most of his cap but sharks do have some P positions here and I think Mike did say he wanted to try to work on kind of the back end and you can’t basically run everything back with the exception of Jake wman being new I think they they need to add another player I would look for them to try to add another player here um especially a right-handed Puck moving defenseman is my guess for for what they they try to do so um and then with the goalies you have Mackenzie black W who’s going in the last year of his deal at 2.35 million and VTech vanich uh who’s got one year at 3.4 of course Van uh finished last year on IR says yet to make his sharks debut after being traded from the Devils um it’s kind of crazy other the shark’s just acquiring former Devils goalies look I’m curious to see if the sharks look to add a veteran goalie in the Aaron Dell slot basically the play on the Cuda if one of our guys both these guys who have known to have injury histories goes down you can call him up an emergency recall and have him kind of back up or play the occasional game so that I wouldn’t be surprised if the Sharks try to do something in in that vein um especially with you know Romanov and Crona both played well you know had their bright spots and both made their nhel debuts last year but I think the Sharks want them to kind of play a full season in the Barracuda and really kind of earn their their minutes down there um so maybe having a guy in and again an Aaron Del type of player who can kind of doesn’t mind if he’s not playing too much with the Barracuda kind of be a veteran down there and then kind of and if you need him to come up and you know for a little bit of time he can do that as well so that would be my guess they I wouldn’t be surprised if they do sign a goalie there um and just to kind of fill things out here uh you have Bren burns with the last year of his dead cap at 2.72 million um Eric Carlson who’s got three years left at 1.5 million uh dead cap and hurdle uh who’s got six years left at 13875 million and then the Martin Jones buyout we’re in the in the final three years of the Martin Jones buy out buy out at the 1. 6666 whatever millon yeah uh1 and two3 millionar uh for for Martin Jones here so sharks still have some work to do to to get to the actual cap floor uh with uh they’re projected from cap friendly um little under $5 million just to get to the cap floor here so um yeah I expect I expect a my career to of sign a scoring Winger who can help um whether that’s you know like don’t be surprised if you see like a four five6 million kind of contract there one helped get to the cap floor but two you you do have to pay for Quality I don’t think he’s going to be big game hunting but I do think he’s going to try to again you’re trying to find some some pieces here to help your celebrini help your Smiths um help your ecklin that way you’re not um kind kind of just running things back and expecting the same type of uh different uh different um different results even with the same people so I’m checking right now to make sure there’s no other uh NHL news at the moment but doesn’t seem like it as I’m recording at 7 o’clock uh Sunday night so that’s going to be it uh we’ll be back tomorrow with a recap of all the first day um re news and re actions to free agency get to know the newest San Jose Sharks uh we’ll have plenty of coverage during the day uh so make sure you follow along wherever you get Podcast and of course you want to watch on YouTube as well um follow show on Twitter Facebook and Instagram at lockon sharks follow me on Twitter at my fry hole until tomorrow bye friends [Music]

The San Jose Sharks made several roster moves ahead of free agency. The Sharks announced the signings of Luke Kunin and Justin Bailey and the termination of Nikolai Knyzhov’s contract. Start with what Kunin’s re-signing means and why it sets him up for a potential trade piece at the deadline. Then, what are the expectations for Justin Bailey heading into the season, and why could he be a massive upgrade for the San Jose Barracuda’s top six? Next, the what if of Nikolai Knyzhov’s career and if it wasn’t derailed by injuries. The Sharks also made qualifying offers to Egor Afanasyev, Thomas Bordeleau, Brandon Coe, Ty Dellandrea, Ty Emberson, Carl Grundstrom, and Henry Thrun. They also let Calen Addison, Jacob Peterson, Jack Studnicka, and Filip Zadina test free agency. Examine what went wrong for the players who went to free agency and what is next for those getting offers. Finally, do a roster reset to see who is still signed and what Mike Grier should be looking to add when free agency starts.

  1. Knyzhov's attitude was always great, its a confidence thing. He was so good before hurting his leg, a devastating injury MCL/ACL, brutal!! I hope he can come back to the NHL someday…

  2. agreed, overpay to get some grizzled vets/scoring, mikheyev wouldn't sign here lol.. treat em like gold, give em opps at trade deadline to their team of choice for taking the pain of early sacrificial seasons in this rebuild!!

  3. I know this team is still going to be bottom of the league but damn it if I’m not excited to see some of the kids play and the level of compete overhauled this coming season. The playoffs just ended and I’m already itching for the preseason to start.
