Per Athletic: Yakov Trenin (4y/14m; 3.5m AAV)

  1. I want to hunt down whatever drug dealer sold Billy G the cocaine that he negotiated this deal on. My goodness. What a nightmare.

  2. Duhaime signs with the Caps for 2x$1.85mil. Seems like we could’ve brought him back for cheaper…

  3. I’m not a GMBG hater like a lot of this sub but what is this?

Everything Russo reported is we were gonna see a top 6 scorer on a short term deal and this is who we get instead? Ottawa got Perron for only half a million more.

I actually like Trenin as a player but A) his career high is 24 points, this is way too big of a contract in both term and AAV, and B) we have so many guys who already fill a similar role IMO. Why in the world would you pay that much for a bottom 6 forward when you already have Foligno and Hartman?

  4. Are we doubling down on the grit again? Imagine a third line with Foligno-Hartman-Trenin. They’d hit everything that moves, including the refs.

  5. Guerin is the master of quickly throwing away any recently acquired goodwill

  6. I’m just going to put a guess on lines out of camp (barring any Laine trade or something similar).

    Kap/EEK/Boldy (won’t change, shouldn’t change)

Hartman or Heidt/Rossi/Zuccarello (at least for a while)

    Ohgren/Trenin/Hartman or Foligno

    Mojo/Khusnutdinov/Gaudreau

If the goal is to keep Mojo and Gaudreau away from the 2nd line, letting Hartman, Heidt, or Ohgren have first dibs, it’s probably worth it. As is Foligno insurance. You also have to remember the PK was historically awful all season. Any and all help is probably a high cost.

Is it the best option? Probably not, but if it gets Mojo off the 2nd line, so Yurov can waltz right in next season, small price to pay. Don’t forget, Bogo was a surprisingly solid addition compared to Addison. It’s possible Trenin offers something the Wild desperately need.

There’s always the chance the team doubles back and signs Shaw to a cheap deal again. The team needs a 13th forward. My guess is the team wants Heidt to be that 2nd line guy for free. If he isn’t, Shaw can always come in as that 13th Forward/hard working guy.

  7. wild fans: our PK is one of the worst in the league, no one does anything when other teams abuse our stars, we’re too small, we don’t have anyone physical, and we give out no trade clauses too much.

bill guerin: i have acquired one of the league’s elite penalty killers, one of the league’s best defensive forwards, the league’s second-highest checkers by volume, and did not offer him trade protection.

wild fans: yOu’Re LiTeRaLLy MiKe ZiMmEr

  8. We are getting straight dogged on for this contract. Everyone seems to be agreeing that there’s no reason for this amount.

  9. Two things can be true simultaneously: this is a player the Wild need and the term/AAV are too much.

Y’all remember how thin our bottom 6 was last year when 1-2 guys get injured? Remember how we would get outmuscled on every board battle? How porous our PK was?

Anyone watch the playoffs where a team’s bottom 6 is just as important as their top 6?

Too much term/money but the dude’s gonna help a lot.

  10. We’ve watched this guy tear up his assignments vs Minnesota for a while now and I’m a little surprised by all the “4th liner” reactions. He’s Thomas Vanek as a grinder, hunch and all. A bit of an overpay, but he’s an outlier on this MN roster: he can handle up-hill matchups and aggressively kill penalties. Top 6 F’s have v little reason to play in Minnesota atm (roster, term, cap, contention) and addressing the exit wound of a penalty kill is a worthy project in the mean time. On top of that, his hands are filthy. He might not have the #’s but he’s been on the highlight reel every year since he made the show. Not a BG fan, but I get why Colorado traded for him and love this signing. Surprised to see out of all the critiques, no one’s calling this a Hynes nepo signing. That this certainly is.

  11. Zucc struggled but Boldy and Ek are good enough to play without Kap now. Kap helps Rossi and Zucc out to make them a top 6 line. I think Boldy and Ek can carry a Heidt, Ohgren or maybe Hartman if you have too for a year. And with the signings our bottom 6 is full of toughness and PK guys. I like what he is doing. Yurov is a year away as well. Between Yurov, Heidt and Ohgren, you’d think you got some pretty top end guys close.

  12. Tell me the this is gonna bring back a line similar to GREEF and I’m sold. I miss having 3 lines rolling

  13. So are the lines:
    Kap – EK – Boldy

    Hartman – Rossi – Zuccarello

    Trenin – Khusnutdinov – Foligno

    Mojo – anyone – Gaudreau

and in 2 years it will be:

    Kap – EK – Boldy

    Heidt – Rossi – Yurov

    Trenin – Khusnutdinov – Ohgren

    Hartman – Gaudreau – Foligno

we have multiple high-ranking prospects that will need top 9 minutes with Yurov, Heidt, Ohgren, and Khusnutdinov all needing a spot by then. It feels very cramped with good players having to go to the 4th line.
