2024-25 NHL Schedule BREAKDOWN: Sharks & Thornton Jersey Retirement

[Music] here’s Brody Brazil you know just thinking about the last 10 days or so what a crazy amount of news that’s been generated by the NHL not just a Stanley Cup decided in game seven but then you had the Fanatics jerseys come out for the upcoming season the NHL awards and the draft were both in Las Vegas then free agency opened up on July 1st and then today here on the 2nd of July the schedule for next season in all 32 teams has now been made public not going to lie hi I may have known a few dates and teams and opponents the schedule gets worked on for months it gets passed around internally but now today released externally for the public and a final version of it for 2024-25 can we pause on that for a second 2025 we’re almost at the halfway point of this decade where is the time going but I digress as I discuss the San Jose Shark schedule for the up coming season it’s not so much about their chances to win and lose certain games and how much they can improve their record by I mean this was the worst team in the NHL last season they’ve gone through a ton of change they’ve started to implement their youth movement they have a brand new head coach they should be the underdog in pretty much every single game they play in if you think about it so I’m breaking down this schedule more for the sense of this group and the platform it might give them this season are there extraordinarily difficult parts for a young group or is it generally a good schedule I actually think it’s the latter I think for a lot of reasons this is a beneficial schedule for a young team it’s going to go through a gauntlet of 82 games and I think there’s 12 sets of backto backs thrown in there with some travel but also with some sustained periods at home and some sustained periods of downtime even during the regular season so we’ll get into it month by month in just a second but first let me break down here some of the NHL notables February 10th through the 21st they’re going to host that first ever four nations faceof that’ll be held in Boston and Montreal so besides the players participating with those four different teams representing their Nations it’s going to be a lot of off time and downtime across the NHL almost as if this were a winter Olympics year it’s not but it is going to have that kind of offtime feel to it in mid-February so a lot of time off for all the teams all the teams also play on the 22nd of October I do believe that’s a Tuesday night that is beneficial during the football season it works out it’s one of those Frozen Frenzy nights is that what they is that what they called it last year I like that I actually think they probably should have done two of those one in the fall one in the spring uh but even to have one of those nights and where they stagger the game time so there’s literally no intermissions all happening at the same time I do like that marketing for the NHL as as for San Jose their longest homestand of the season is eight games their longest road trip of the year is eight games and I do believe as we look at this in a second those happen right back to back is it8 and then seven or seven then eight I can’t remember but we’ll take a look at it it’s so fresh I haven’t memorized the schedule yet but the longest home stand and the longest road trip happened back to back I think in the months of March and April or is it February and March we’ll take a look at that in just a second and I was correct it is 12 backto backs for the Sharks this season typically they have 9 10 11 in this case 12 so that’s 24 of 82 total games that are backto back that’s kind of a high amount right I mean that’s about a quarter about a quarter of their games this year are in back-to-back fashion so they’ll have to be conditioned and they do play a lot of three games in four night spans a lot of what is it four games in seven nights span so there are some busy stretches as we look across the NHL the first time we’ll have a Stanley Cup Final rematch is December 16th when Florida visits Edmonton and then January 18th north of the Border it’ll be hockey Day in Canada all seven Canadian teams will be in action on January 18th all right circling back to the Sharks here before we look at the months month by month I we’ll take a wider glance here and this is actually crazy but it’s not a typo this is the truth seven Road games each in October November December and January and then when you look at the balance of home and road so you’re a little bit Road heavy to start then you get one more home versus Road game in November so it’s more balanced even here you’re only one fewer home games so it’s pretty close right we don’t have one of those home or away heavy months January 7 and 7even so I mean basically through the start of 2025 it’s it’s plainly split only six total games in February 3 and three in March you get some extended time at home 8 at home 5 on the road and then April four at home and five on the road if there’s only one criticism I have of the entire NHL schedule it’s this I wish they would start just a little bit earlier every year kind of like they used to I really wish the season would start you know October 1st basically a week and a half earlier I really don’t like the season the regular season ending mid late April I just I feel like as the month changes to October that’s the right time for hockey to start and aside from what basketball does I just I just feel like it’s right to get the season started a little earlier so it can be completed just a little bit earlier this year it went as long as possible basically almost to July went to late June with game seven of the Stanley Cup Final then you had that crazy week of like the Cup being hoisted on a Monday and the draft happening on a Friday and Saturday it’s just a little bit too tightly packed whereas if the NHL could spread things out a little bit they become more of a year- round news cycle anyway let’s get back to the Sharks here in this schedule so it all starts with a pretty uncharacteristic home opener and they do start this year at home 7:30 and by the way all these times are local times respective to the cities they’re in 7:30 home opener against the St Louis Blues I don’t know how many sharks Blues home and season openers we’ve had across the years but that’s how it’s going to start one more game against Anaheim so an obvious off day there in between and then the Sharks go on the road for a really tough road trip between Dallas Chicago and Winnipeg all very difficult opponents and you may think well Chicago is not but Bard and the improvements they’ve made it’s all part of that road trip it’s also the first Sharks back-to-back sequence of the year then you come back for only one home game that’s on a rare Sunday Sunday afternoon tilt 100 p.m. against the ABS also ult opponent a very uh mysterious cap situation team right now they have basically no cap space but also not a full roster at this very moment stay tuned on the Colorado Avalanche but that’s a Sunday game afternoon style I like those I’d love to see more of those I advocate for more of those I also do wish though that this wasn’t a Sunday in October a football season I’d rather have that been a Saturday day game if I could I guess even with college football going on but I digress then you’re back out on the road for three more but this Trip’s just a little bit easier I take it back four more Anaheim so California California Nevada and the Sharks first ever game official game they’ve played preseason games at Delta Center but now they’re doing it for real against the Utah uh Hockey Club did I almost say Yeti I’m kidding yeah of course I’m going to slip that in there as many times the as Randy H is going to say the salt dog the salty dogs I’m gonna have to work on that the former desert dogs the Utah Hockey Club sharks will face them on the 28th of October on the road and then it’s a quick backto back so another backto back back home against the LA Kings and then two more nights off I take it back one more night off the 30th of October and then on Halloween Halloween night the sharks at 7:30 will put on their spooky masks and take on Connor B at the tank so there you go that’s what the month of October looks like for team teal one day off to start the beginning of November and then you get Vancouver Columbus and Minnesota to keep that home stand going and then a pretty difficult road trip which I got to be honest is usually one of their first road trips of the season and it was always kind of a bonding trip to go to New Jersey and the two New York teams and maybe throwing a Philly or pit and that’s the case here it’s New Jersey it’s the Flyers it’s it’s the Rangers and the Penguins so this trip usually an October Run for the Sharks but now it’s in November and it is kind of important to get you know those those not huge road trips done early in the year but it is kind of nice you’re in those East Coast cities before it’s really really cold and really snowy not to mention you get some quality bonding time on the road I think people forget how important that is at the early part of a season especially for a young sharks team like this they’re looking for time and opportunity to come together and yeah home dates are great because you get those practice days in between like I can imagine a practice there on the 4th uh maybe here even on the eth before they would fly out like on the 9th to play this game on the 10th you like home practice dates and to be honest you also don’t mind some of the road trips with a little bit of time off so that that team can get uh a little bit more acquainted with each other so a 4 game Roadie there Jersey Philly MSG and Pittsburgh and then this is crazy how many times have we seen this already then you come back home for one game you host the winged wheel the Detroit Red Wings on on Monday the 18th and then you go back out on the road for Dallas and St Louis backto back Style on a Wednesday and Thursday so that’s that’s kind of an interesting little sequence there I mean look at this two we span right here 1 two 3 4 five 6 seven eight games in 14 days and two road trips some travel there changing time zones constantly ly you come back and you you host the Sabers on a Saturday night a 5:00 p.m. Saturday night contest November 23rd now I wonder why that is early I wonder if as reported that’s the Joe thoron Jersey retirement ceremony that’s right we’ll do a little number 19 going up to the rafters to join number 12 Patrick Marlo so Circle that date on your calendar just like I’m doing in pretty much every color possible the 23rd of November so the home stand continues you get the Kings you get the Senators you get the Kraken and how about this a little Seattle backto back to close out November the 29th and the 30th so a day game on Friday so I’m I’m assuming if I have this correct right this has to be Thanksgiving the 28th is Thanksgiving this year yeah that sounds about right so that’s why you’d have the day after Thanksgiving right there and then you’d have that Saturday game Seattle at home and then Seattle on the road to close out November and then we get into December uh this road trip is well it keeps going you get let me see wait were we just in Seattle so Seattle all the way out to wait a second the state of Washington to the Washington Capitals that’s kind of a hall then Tampa Florida Carolina and St Louis I mean this right here to go along with that that Kraken game that’s some heavy lifting to start off December to end November and to start December the good news is for the sharks that for pretty much the second half of December they get to stay well wait a second did I say Pacific time zone but that that wouldn’t necessarily make sense because Edmonton’s one hour ahead correct all right I might have screwed that up but basically you get to stay out west generally speaking the second half of December you obviously get the 24th fifth and sixth off as traditional and as typical with the NHL always do appreciate that and then the Sharks play the Flyers 5:00 at home now usually in all the years I’ve done these games especially the last obviously 15 it’s usually a road game somewhere out west for the Sharks and it does start at 5:00 Pacific and they are done by 7:38 something like that it’s great you get to go to a hockey game on New Year’s Eve you weren’t going to do anything before 900 p.m. anyway like well after the game is over and the post game is over so you’re kind of set up for New Year’s Eve no matter what but it’s just typically that this is a a road game for the Sharks and this year like I said for the first time in a long time San Jose will be hosting a game at the tank on New Year’s Eve and again I I want to throw this in there but there’s another back-to-back Vegas and Calgary backto back coming off the I mean think about this right players shut it down for the 24th 5th and 6th for the Christmas holiday break and then right back at it Vegas and Calgary back to back granted it is at home but man those are two heavy opponents coming off a little break all right then you get the home stand continuing here into 2025 Tampa comes in the Devils come in now there’s a game I like Saturday January 100 p.m. you know why because my seven-year-old he’ll be seven by then that’s the I’m I’m circling that on Brazil’s calendar I’m going to see if we can make sure that I’ll be working it at the tank I don’t get any say in that by the way that’s a great one to take my son to that’s fantastic then you get Vegas I feel like we’re seeing Vegas a lot here in the last couple months November December and January Vegas at home at 7:30 then the sharks are out back out in Utah again so out in Utah and then home for the Minnesota Wild on the 11th and then here we go again so that was a one game Ro quick joh and then you’re back out east again oh wait a second I almost I screwed that up it’s actually a five gamer so it’s at Detroit at Columbus at the Islanders Boston and then how about another another back to back see these are the things you don’t really realize when you look at the schedule sometimes uh in in list form but when you look at it in calendar form it really makes sense Nashville and Nashville a little away in home series The PRS twice in a row Steven stamco in the PRS that’s o That’s going to take some adjusting till I firmly grasp that one then you get the uh Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers visiting the tank 25th of January then the penguins come in and then you go back out on the road to face the Kraken on the 30th of January so you’re on the road to start I take it back to end January that so that was just a one gamer so we’ve had we’ve had a lot of one gamers come home for one game and then go back on the road for a couple more games in this case go on go on the road for one game and then come back home for a bunch of games you get Montreal van and Dallas so van and Dallas obviously prevent uh present a significant challenge but here’s what I like in between I mean not just you know some home dates in a row and some practice days and some rest days but then you get all this off right here and I I probably haven’t been doing a well enough job in this video but it’s just to show you that this is a great portion of the year for the Sharks to slow it down reassess things how are things going how are the young players doing do you need to bring somebody else up how’s the pipeline doing it’s great that it it is very paced out in a platform for them to do well this year so you obviously get some home games right before this long break and now you start to get into the extended home and Road portions of the schedule so when they come back they’re on the road back to back so all that time off and then two games in two nights at Calgary at Winnipeg couple nights off with travel there at Montreal and the road trip continues so you’ve already seen three games on the road you finish it off with Ottawa toron Toronto Buffalo and Colorado what is that right there did I did I do something when I imported the schedule why does buffalo have a little drop down there but that’s the seven game Road Trip I talked about earlier that is the longest road trip of the season right after the break so that’s like if you’re going to have a seven game Ro why not do it when you just had two weeks off honestly that actually works out pretty conveniently and then what do you get after the longest road trip of the Season you get the longest home standand of the Season 1 2 3 4 five 6 7 eight and yes I do put little dashes in my sevens I don’t I don’t know if everybody noticed that and I don’t know why I do that but yes I do do that so eight games in a row and look at I mean you talk about those practice days and that time to refine your game and figure things out wow that’s a lot of time right there so that’s great I mean the month of March you’re almost at the end of the season but it’s a breather right especially for young kids who have never played 82 games in a season and they their lives or their careers yet it’s kind of a a fortunate break that this time off and the heavy time off comes in this month of March when you really need that second wind and that that gasp of air and granted they just had two weeks off earlier but this really helps the team out so you come back home I take it back you you have this home stand and then you finish off the month of March on the road against the LA Kings little 6:00 puck drop is it still called the crypto.com arena and then we finally get into the last stretch of the season in April and again this is what I was talking about before typically and I know this because well that’s my birthday by the way happy birthday to me I’ll be working again which pretty used to by the way it’s no big deal I’ll I’ll only be that’s not fun to look at I’ll be 44 when the Sharks play the Oilers on April 3rd 2025 and that’s it’s also like I said still weird to say but I I just wish that the NHL season would end right there like on the 7th of April or even the 3rd of April the 5ifth of April whatever it’s all these games here that’s when the playoffs should be starting that’s when we can cut back the playoff schedule so that things wrap up maybe like June 10th or so not June 21st or whatever it ended on this year um so April looks like this it’s kind of you know busy every other day you get a Tuesday a Thursday a Saturday then a Monday day and a Wednesday and a Friday and then a Sunday Monday there’s one more back toback cuz you know we just didn’t have enough of those and you close it out with Connor McDavid and the Oilers probably pretty poised to go into another playoff season a second season for them so again I don’t know much about the strength of schedule here that’s a lot of Edmonton by the way look at that at the very end three games in the final final half month of a season there the Sharks will play the Edmonton Oilers two at home one on the road but that’s the schedule um I just I think it’s pretty balanced of all the years that I’ve been covering the team some years the schedules come out and you’re like whoa look at that stretch and granted they’ll be the underdog every single time they lace up the skate so we’re not really talking about that I’m just saying there’s no impossible like this is going to rip the team to shreds portions of the season and yes this was a team last year that had I think losing streaks if was it 8 n and 11 games thrown in there I I tried to conveniently forget all that but they had some long some long ruts that they had to get themselves out of and that might happen again this year no question about it but they’re on the rise they’re on the build they’re on the mend in a lot of different ways and I just think this schedule does help them more than it actually hurts them in any significant ways all the opponents are tough but there’s no parts that are like an unreal Gauntlet uh that that seem unfair to the sharks in this upcoming season season all right you made it here to the end of this video just putting it out today with the schedule officially being released let me know what you think about all this in the The National Hockey League (@NHL) and the San Jose Sharks (@SanJoseSharks) today announced the team’s complete 2024-25 regular season schedule presented by Southwest Airlines.

San Jose’s 82-game regular season schedule features three games against Anaheim and Vegas, and four games against all other Pacific Division foes. The Sharks will play the Central Division teams three times and twice against all Eastern Conference Opponents.

The schedule also features a first-of-its-kind two-week break in February for the Four Nations Faceoff from Feb. 12-20. The tournament will feature four national teams (Canada, Finland, Sweden, United States) and consist of a total of seven games played over a nine-day period, including a traditional round robin format. The teams with the best tournament record will then advance to a one-game Final.

Most notably, the Sharks will host Joe Thornton’s No. 19 Retirement Night on Nov. 23 against the Buffalo Sabres. He will join fellow Sharks legend Patrick Marleau as the only players in franchise history to have their numbers retired. The duo remain two of the most iconic teammates and prestigious franchise cornerstones, having played together in San Jose for more than a decade. Other details surrounding the game and activations leading up to the jersey retirement night will be announced at a later date.

  1. You're not the only one who cross-hatches their sevens. I was taught it by a math teacher as a way to keep my 7's and 1's straight. I also cross-hatch my z's.

  2. Hey Brodie, love your videos. You took my question about a month back when you answered 50 questions(Mine was the Barry Bonds Rule). I wanted to run this by you to see what you think.
I'm 58 years old and grew up in the Bay Area, from 1970-1986(Ygnacio Valley High grad….our high school is attached to DeLaSalle)…….and used to love going to A's games. One of my favorite things was when the A's started playing the song "Celebration" after every win. I think the Sharks should adopt this song, with a twist, every time Macklin Celebrini scores a goal, replacing the word Celebration with Celebrini!!! What do you think?
Tim Baden, Vancouver, Washington via Concord, California to Carson City, Nevada and now Vancouver

  3. Salty Dogs were Syracuse’s minor league soccer clubs nickname back in the mid-2000’s 😂. Let’s just call them Yeti and get next season started Brodie!!! 🏎️

  4. Why did they have to schedule that October Avs game at 1 pm!? The Niners play the Chiefs AT HOME, that same day, only a 25 minutes later in the day. Crazy,
