of our SEC championships our Super Bowl titles everything that we know in love about this great country absolutely uh I was able to eat a couple hot dogs even after last weekend I think that’s the best second best outcome of the 99 and9 is we’ve completed it everybody on the show finished a completion within the parameters of the rules but now also I can eat hot dogs again and I feel good about that I feel real good you you found the joy again in your cons consumption of GES yeah it’s like I I’m playing with house money a little bit if you will and so is Ford as we enter the home stretch here of training camp which by the way is just under three weeks away for the Arizona Cardinals and we’ve talked about it for some time that listen just because free agency technically ended pre-draft there are players to be had now the question that becomes are the Cardinals going to spend because according to our guy Donnie drwan over at cards SI they have a little bit of money that they could dabble into B that’s right entering July according to our guy Donnie Donuts entering July the Arizona Cardinals have the third highest cap space in the league at 35.3 million that’s per over the cap uh what’s something you’d like to see them do before training camp that’s Donnie’s question I think we’re asking the same thing because we lack originality and Donnie’s out there creating some good content driving some engagement um yeah what would you like to see him do before training camp Johnny if anything or you know I I’d say I’d even open it up before the season begins in September well I mean I’ve been on this for some time I think everybody knows where I’m going with this I they need to sign a pass rusher a rotational veteran Edge rusher that could come in and supplement zav Collins and B Joe gelari and again this is not the bell of the ball these aren’t Premier players that are available but yanuk and daway is somebody that again could play in Jonathan Ganon scheme had a lot of success in Chicago especially two years ago it’s a flyer player so at any point in the off season like at this time this specific time nobody’s getting multi-year contracts most of the time nobody’s getting more than vet minimum deals guess why because that’s why these players are still available my guess is a lot of these players that we’re going to talk about though have been offered contracts have been offered invitations into Camp especially post-draft as teams didn’t fill out their necessary needs right they have to Pivot to a veteran or two hey guess what that player they’re still holding out for more money so yeah Austin Ford could put it a sweetener a cherry on top maybe kicking some incentives and some guarantees but I think it starts and ends with the front seven I don’t feel comfortable with this front seven over the course of 17 games still I think there’s still too many unproven entities and you know I go back to the scenario it was unfortunate that Philadelphia housed a lot of options internally in free agency that the Cardinals could have pursued they would have P pursued we have it sourc but they don’t want to deal rly so with Harry Roseman so this is what you get we are respectfully free agent dumpster diving in July and August yeah and you also have to ask the question like what what’s what would be worth to Monty ausen Fort uh where do they truly feel like they are and I’m not saying like hey you know really put the pressure on but where are they as far as year two of their rebuild like are they willing to go out there and spend draft Capital which in turn would bring on you know probably a bigger salary as well are you willing to go out there and find a bridge in the pass rush room that’s going to make an impact could you go out there and get yourself a Matthew judon from the New England Patriots and you know you wouldn’t be on the on the hook for his entire cat pit of what 14 a half million dollars but you know you probably have to pick up his base of about six and a half they’ve got some wiggle room there but I think the biggest hold up for the Cardinals in this situation is like do they want to give up that day three pick probably an earlier day three pick in order to get somebody like Juden judon from uh Foxboro over to the desert yeah I I would say they are less likely to trade picks for players until maybe this season obviously with the trade deadline I think like trade deadline’s up for grabs for the first time in a while but I think they’re sticking to the free agency pool so outside of yanak kandak it’s a lot of Emanuel agba Carl Lawson who’s a solid player when he’s healthy he’s missed some time and then like if they want to tap into the defensive tackle Group which again I’m never comfortable with Hassan Ridgeway from Houston they’ve got Byron Mo man or moan from Seattle who’s a nose tackle and then the Ageless lynval Joseph so yeah there’s a group of about five to seven guys that listen the Cardinals aren’t going to sign all these players if they even sign one that are going to be invited camps that are going to be on the the ticker free agency tracker and that I think can make impact for somebody again you’re not signing in my opinion starters like think about Once Upon a Time and this is the best version of this bow Dwight Fry and Jonathan Abraham were summer editions by Steve Kim it dubbed the Kim time signing as a thing that we follow here in Arizona because we had low expectations that we were throwing stuff at the wall the Cardinals were seeing who would fit brarian defense with uh Todd Todd BS and Company and it worked out the cardinal now with relationships built throughout the league with JG and Austin Ford can do the same but again no one’s coming to take Z kollins and be Jo Lor’s job it’s you’re looking at who can throw an inning or two at the back half of your Bullpen who can come in on third down and give you a little juice off the edge and help you get after Matthew Stafford for 10 plus plays a game that’s all you’re looking for and again I think that that is available right now yeah could it absolutely is that there is that those depth plays but as far as where this organiz I think this organization is pretty content and that’s not you know me saying that Monty Austin for’s not looking for Avenues and options to to improve his roster each and every day but to what to the expense of playing time for the young players that’s where the content is as we sit here in on July 5th 2024 you know now less than 20 days from them reporting the training camp like if they show up the training camp and for whatever reason like somebody in your secondary didn’t come to play or the competition isn’t as tight as we believe it’s going to be between Max Melton and Starling Thomas and Elijah Jones uh and Garrett Williams to be that cornerback opposite you know Shawn Murphy bunting then maybe they hit up the agents the representation of xaven Howard andori Jackson and Stefon Gilmore and Eli Apple but you even then so I think that they would probably have them give them a little bit more breathing room and an ability to to make mistakes you know into the regular season before they start maybe even look at the quarterback Market you know and the same could be said for this for this Edge even though you would hope that there’s going to be more urgency as far as the pass rush goes just because it’s the status quo and there aren’t as many new names in that room yeah know you you hit the nail on the head of something I think is really key for people externally from this Market to understand is they if they’re gonna fail and I use the word fail with quotations like it’s not failing they’re going to give their players their guys the early reps and if they’re going to fail they’re going to fail with those guys the problem with that is we have seen the schedule the first half of the Season it is a gauntlet second half not so much but you’re playing a lot of Niners Rams bills Packers right Lions it’s a gauntlet of games and you have to come out of it with your head close to above water if you want a shot at the postseason this year if you get through the first month of the season it’s not there with Z Collins BJ gelari looks like you know solid player but not going to be your go-to pass rusher you have to have a contingency plan of at least let me get somebody else in a rotation because I’m gonna tell you right now bow and I say this every time we talk about this group I know what Victor dumi is I know what Jesse luketa is and I know what Dennis Gard are they are respectfully bottom of the tier bottom of the roster players 53 man they’re closer to the 45th than the fifth player on your roster and so they’re not going to be able to help you the way I think you need help I already know the Cardinals or Aces on special teams I know they’ve got tremendous leadership and that’s why you kept said players around last year but guess what now you’ve graduated to a point where hey yeah actually our good players are leaders too now and our special teams they they have tightened up we’ve added some players in free agency they’re going to help us with that your pass rushers need to be able to rush the passer how many players on the Cardinal roster are a DN Edge rusher that can’t do what Their position says they are assigned to do and I say that with all due respect like if I’ve got an O lb in front of my name and I look up at the end of the year and I got two sacks I didn’t do my job I’m sorry that’s the reality of situation you are paid at the end of the day yes to play the run on running Downs off the edge and to smoke a tackle every once in a while Cardinals do not have as of yet somebody that’s proven that they can do that consistently on this team yeah it’s the most vulnerable spot uh much like the quarterback position as they awaited Kyler Murray to rehab and come back last season uh going into 2024 it by by riding and and moving forward with the with the status quo essentially outside of the addition of zaven uh was it Xavier Thomas the Clemson pass rusher in the fifth round they they put themselves in a spot for to and open to criticism like hey did you do enough at this at this spot to to help yourself out your defense this season and I think you know if things go arai if they go south they’re they’re gonna have to they’re going to face some backlash and and you know we’ll see how this team how they would operate when they’re on the Fly trying to supplement a position or just fill a position the good thing is though as I look across this roster and you know your task with spending you know the the the cap Surplus that they have right now um you know it’s no longer the the Cardinals organization of old where it’s like oh this position’s not working out oh [ __ ] there’s nothing on the roster right now that you would feel comfortable uh moving you know into that place there’s depth really at all levels of this roster and it’s not hey go out to the free agent Market kick the tires on these guys for a starting spot this is depth it’s all depth and like sure you can break class glass in case of emergency to go spend on you know whoever may be available but there it’s never going to be somebody like Hey we’re putting all our eggs in the uh you know July August free agent basket yeah and again that’s a testament to Monty Austin for it it’s a testament to the depth he he’s built already in two drafts and two free agent classes like listen there’s something to be said having 12 picks in the draft seven in the top 90 feel like you got good talent and again this is a house of cards that’s not built on cards it’s built on big sturdy cement blocks or whatever the hell you make houses out of it’s got good drywalls it’s got you hear that term it’s got good bones right but sometimes sometimes you need a little cache sometimes you need maybe some nice you know fauxwood blinds some nice curtain rods some accents Cardinals don’t have a lot of that yet they don’t have a lot of household names yet and again household is only good as if it can carry their weight yanuk and dway only helps the Cardinals if he can come in get you six sacks this year in a supplemental role and I think you can like I I I feel like if you’re Jonathan Ganon you’ve had every opportunity now to kind of wait it out let these young players play into their role last year you’ve added some new players this year it’s time to pull a selfish if you’re Johnny Ganon it’s time to go through the first month of training camp see what you have go to a for and said hey my guy we’re gonna we’re going to add a vet I got a couple connections here in the league I’ve called around I’ve called by money MRA flu I’m gonna pull selfish right now let’s open up the checkbook because the difference and I don’t say this one with any hesitation the difference between adding Yanik and doway and not could be the difference of making playoffs like hey honey hey honey we the last three consecutive weekends we’ve gone to Bed Bath and Beyond we’ve gone we’ve gone to the thrift store we’ve gone shopping I’ve been a good boy Daddy needs a football Sunday where he just plops down the couch and watches little little grid iron yeah gonna have a nice little Saturday maybe uh maybe I don’t know I don’t know if we’ll have enough time I don’t know if we’ll have enough time to dip into the free agency pool but guess what yeah time’s up for Monty Austin for let’s let’s pull selfish last year and no one can dispute this we had two months of zero sacks 0.0 sacks in the desert now a lot of that bow you know was a byproduct of who’s playing defensive tackle but just like cut the [ __ ] get the get after the quarterback if you can’t we’re gonna go to somebody who can’t yeah it’s it’s a produ production League no doubt about it and like they have created and this is a good thing in that organization competition opportunity and they’re going to play who takes advantage of their given opportunity and uh right now going into the training camp you’re right that especially that position pass rush zav Collins BJ o jari they’re gonna have the biggest biggest opportunities of that group to to emerge and and fend off this team going and taking that that little extra money and spending it at at outside linebacker we’re very fortunate manty Austin Ford knows what he’s doing we’re also fortunate on the show on a post Fourth of July holiday we have the gambling degenerate professionally on a daily basis and I think the most consistent question we get is when is Trey Benson taking over for James Conor is it happening in August or September I gotta get the date down and I think it’s pretty wild yeah because you know we’re fantasy Enthusiast here on this show and I’ve been pretty steadfast in my opinion not only do I not think Trey Benson has seen any bulk share of the load this year I think Michael Carter Jr and I know you disagree with this opens up the season as rb2 I like Trey Benson I think he’s got a tremendous future I’ve been asking this team to take a back in the draft forever but as long as James Conor is repping the C on his chest and a single digit number and making good money like Trey Benson is not going to be the guy this year can you educate our fan base on that for a second yeah I agree with you on that and this we’re continuing our series to do positional breakdowns we did quarterbacks just the other day you can find that on our YouTube channel at phnx sports you know one of the more intriguing battles is the qb2 battle between Clayton tun and Desmond Ritter but yeah like the idea that Trey Benson’s gonna get opportunity in 2024 is not incorrect because what is what happens to James Conor each and every season inevitably he misses time right he’s never played a full season in his entire seven-year NFL career but the idea that he’s just going to give way to a third round rookie 66 overall pick Trey Benson because you know his young fresh legs yeah that’s that’s a bit of a naive take like Trey Benson isn’t just going to be gifted a role in this offense he’s only going to get it if James Conor is not available and because James Connor is beloved by this organization he’s beloved by his head coach he’s been called The Blueprint as far as how to put in the work uh and the process that he’s created for himself in preparing for you know the NFL season or preparing for any given game like Jonathan ganet loves James Conor and you saw pay off huge form last season in James Conor’s first thousand yard season uh where he went 10 40 and then he also had seven what what he have touchdown wise he had seven rushing touchdowns for the Cardinals plus he throw what he he’s done in the uh receiving game his relationship with Kyler Murray is really tight like James Conor is not gonna uh give up this running back position uh if he’s healthy this season I mean you think about what were their most the Cardinals most uh impactful wins last year they didn’t have many Dallas Philadelphia Pittsburgh those are three playoff teams or three teams winning records or did Pittsburgh make the playoffs I can’t remember they did um which is egregious uh what was the comment the nominator in all those games James Conor running the football James Conor being effective and uh should have had another Victory ball against Seattle which he had over a 100 yards that game a lot of people compare this to and I think it’s easy to draw comparisons to this like oh yeah remember when Zack Herz was around and then try McBride didn’t get an opportunity and then eventually took over and exploded last year James Conor is still in the leap player Zack Herz was was done and he’s he’s been done respectfully like James Conor could match what he did last year and they would undoubtedly take that James Conor’s game I think has gotten better with age he has never been the guy who’s carried the ball 350 times in a year or had 300 plus touches he’s always been a guy who let’s give him about 60 to 70% of the touches and he’s going to do the most with it and then there’s gonna be that 35% to supplement and that’s where Trey Benson’s going to have to make his mark this year outside as you mentioned the opportunity for him to start it a game or two or three God forbid if James Conor goes down which does happen there there there’s an Avenue for him to take to take some of that load off but at no point this year if James Conor is healthy and he’s on the roster is Trey Benson gonna be listed as rb1 never never even like he he’d have to be the modern day Adrien Peterson where we’re sitting there in August and we’re watching him put up about 250 allp purpose against the the Denver Bron Broncos in the preseason for anybody even suggests anything like that and I like Trey Benson he was a tremendous player at Florida State but at the same James Conor is a full- grown man James Conor is the most phys one of the most physically intimidating players on this team and he has the immense amount of respect from everybody in that locker room especially who the franchise quarterback who is Kyler Murray spent God thankfully for this the most time with this offseason publicly it’s been James Conor yeah so that’s your franchise quarterback that’s your best player on offense last year they’re tied at the hip he’s got respect and admiration and support from his head coach this offense coordinator this is James Conor’s offense like it’s not Trey Benson’s offense check back in 2025 right and James Conor is the key to what they want to do offensively he’s going to set the tone and he’s also going to set up the ability for this offense to uh exploit mismatches and take advantage of some defenses that might be creeping up and stacking some boxes against this offense that that’s going to want to run the ball on first and second down and put themselves in third and manageable and move the chain I mean he ran for five yards per carry last season he was he was unbelievable when he was available um and like Michael Carter like if you’re breaking it down who’s going to see the field more often or who’s going to have the rb2 roll on Sundays while James Conor is available like I think that Trey Benson is your in-house replacement for James Conor if he does go down as he said but like Mark Michael Carter would not get the first crack if James Conor is not available if he gets hurt Michael Carter remains in his role as your primary passing downback your change of pace guy so like when you look at the Arizona Cardinals running back room going into 2024 and man is it a extreme upgrade of where was last year it was like James Connor and they brought in Marlon Mack at some point during training camp there just wasn’t any they had Amari derado who’s still on the roster and he’s going to really have to uh make a case for himself but I think he’s mostly auditioning for other teams the undrafted rookie free agent at a TCU last year uh who had some nice moments but it’s just because it’s loaded with James Connor Michael Carter and then the third round pick Trey Benson plus you got DJ Dallas whose primary role is gonna be in the return game uh with the new kickoff rules yeah it to me it’s it’s it’s a loaded backfield in the best possible way but then again like here’s another Factor Kyler Murray’s legs are back like Kyler Murray I don’t think he’s going to be running as much as he did Circuit 2020 with Cliff Kingsbury but that is going to take some yardage off the ground that otherwise we go to a running back I think Trey Benson has every opportunity on this team in 2025 to be a top 10 fantasy back I think he’s worth a stash a draft pick I think people should be excited about him there are too many elements this year though that outside of James Conor God forbid going down with a season Ender that just leads me to believe like as well DJ Dallas there just leads me to believe like he’s just going to be a part of the equation a small part right the equation because I’m gonna tell you right now the Cardinals were fourth in rushing last year I think they’re going to be effective this year they’re not going to be fourth in rushing they’re probably going to be closer to 8 to 12 why is that because their franchise quarterback is back and they drafted Marvin [ __ ] Harrison Jr they’re gonna throw the football a little bit more out of necessity so I like Trey Benson I’m excited for him but I also I want to see James Conor put the bow on this on his time with Cardinals fans and and his era of Cardinal football with a playoff birth I want to see James Conor be a focal point for this team getting to the postseason I don’t want to see James Connor take a backseat to anybody this year yeah and he he I think he’s earned that respect no doubt about it and it you can there there can be both uh both can be true you can be excited about James Conor coming off a career going into the final year of his contract and also be excited about Trey Benson as the future of the Arizona Cardinal Run game that will hopefully in a perfect world not really start in its eta’s 2025 and and then you can get excited about him being rb1 and draft him in your fantasy leagues and him being you know one of the more reliable backs and guys who are going to get a consistent workload uh going forward Yeah you mentioned a perfect world to me the only perfect world exist when I’m at
