Daily Minors Quick-Notes 7/5/25 – Joe Whitman Rolling Strong in Eugene


Second Comp. Round Draft Pick Joe Whitman got off to a very slow start this season, but he’s been able to get rolling as the season has rolled on, and after a promotion to High-A.  Meanwhile, Alex Cobb has a rehab start in San Jose, and Rayner Arias sets a new career high (Granted, it hasn’t been a long career yet, but still!).

Player of the Game: CF Grant McCray: 2-4, 2 2B (4)

Grant McCray had his second straight game with two hits, helping his batting average in Sacramento jump up from .243 to .266.  Through 19 games at Triple-A, McCray now has four doubles, two triples, and two home runs.

Other Players to Spotlight:

  • 3B Casey Schmitt: 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B (14), 1 BB, 1 K – Schmitt now has four doubles in his last five games, going 7-for-21 (.333) in that span.
  • C Logan Porter: 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 2B (4), 1 BB, 1 K – Porter has gone 4-for-11 with a double over his last three games.
  • SP Carson Ragsdale: 4.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 5 K, 2 HR, 1 Balk – It was a rough game for Ragsdale with two home runs allowed.  He had previously allowed nine home runs over 71.0 innings (once every 7.2 innings).

  • 2B Marco Luciano: 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K – Luciano still at second base, with Koss at shortstop.

Player of the Game: 2B Jimmy Glowenke: 2-4, 1 R, 3 RBI, 1 2B (9), 1 HR (5), 1 K

Glowenke hit his first extra-base hits of July with his double and home run.  He’s hitting just .208 on the season.

Other Players to Spotlight:

  • SP Trevor McDonald: 4.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 WP, 1 HBP – McDonald made his Double-A debut.  He had a 4.86 ERA in five games at High-A, and has a 3.52 ERA in five games in the ACL when he got underway this season.
  • RP Will Bednar: 2.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 HR – Through three games in Double-A, Bednar has a 6.00 ERA with nine strikeouts to nine walks.
  • 1B Andy Thomas: 3-4, 2 R, 1 K – Thomas’ 3-hit game broke a 5-game hitting streak.  He’s hitting .244/.328/.330 on the year.

Joe Whitman had one of his best games of the season, reaching six innings for the first time in his career.  After four High-A games, he has a 2.37 ERA, with 21 strikeouts to three walks in 19.0 innings

  • SS Cole Foster: 1-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 HR (1), 1 K, 1 E (1) – Foster got his first High-A home run in his second game there, and fourth of the season overall in 58 games.
  • CF Jonah Cox: 1-3, 1 R, 1 K, 1 SB (9) – Cox continues to steal bases, now with 47 in 52 attempts.

This was Justin Bench’s first home run of the season, in 49 games across three levels.  It matches his previous season high in 2023, in 27 games.  He’s hitting .278/.391/.398 in 29 games at San Jose.

  • SP Alex Cobb: 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K, 1 WP, 1 HBP – This was Cobb’s second rehab start, both of which were 2.0 innings long.
  • CF Wade Meckler: 1-3, 1 BB – Meckler is now hitting .244/.354/.341 through 11 Low-A rehab games.
  • RF Estanlin Cassiani: 1-4, 1 R, 2 K – Cassiani is hitting .228/.307/.260.
