TARASENKO TO DETROIT, YZERMAN TRADES FABBRI – Winged Wheel Podcast – July 7th, 2024

[Music] welcome to the winged wheel podcast here to talk all things hockey are your hosts Brad krisco Ryan Hannah and Evan lobsinger back from our longest break that we’ve taken I think since the Christmas holiday so thanks folks for bearing with us as we took a mini rest after the craziness and it was not even 12 hours after posting where Eiserman signed Tera senko and traded Robbie fabry away on a cap dump and I looked at that and I messaged in the chat and I went I’m not even mad like you just knew it was going to come I was at work when the news broke and I opened my phone saw it audibly cursed the employee next to me asked what’s up and I’m like the Red Wings just signed tereno and she’s like is that not good I’m like it is she’s like why are you upset I’m like we recorded last night early a day earlier than usual and then not till Sunday and the best part about all that was when when teraso came in everyone immediately notified us of the fact that you actually reversed jinx this into existence last episode you were talking I I didn’t go back and listen to your voice because I I value my sanity but you said something to the effect of and terce anko’s not going to sign here and there you go you’re welcome you thought you were Lobster damus yeah like just like next summer there’s no way Mitch Marner or Miko ranton in sign here or you know they’re not going to get Leon dry cital in the future no chance absolutely no way Evan don’t do the same thing because you’re the only one who actually predicts stuff reliably on I’ll say nothing as you love to Welcome to the winged wheel podcast folks back from a little break here to talk to you about all things Detroit Red Wings hockey the world of the NHL and lots more I’m one your host Ryan Hannah I’m Brad Chrisco and I’m Evan on this episode of the wi whe podcast we are going to start with the Tera senko signing and what that means for the Red Wings forward group then we’ll get into the trade of Robbie fabriz has saddened a lot of people and how it relates to Detroit’s cap situation there’s going to be a discussion on arbitration and how it relates to Joe voleno and whether Justin hall or vly huso are in play here in terms of biots Steve eisman’s thoughts from his press conference on the 4th of July which felt very Steve Eisman where the Redwing stand right now looking forward development Camp Nate Danielson and lots more before we get into overtime before all that I want to let you know that the wing wheel podcast is primarily supported by our patreon supporters patreon.com wheel podcast if you posited that there weren’t too many free agents left that could fill the kind of offensive hole that the Red Wings top six had teraso was one of the few names and it was a little surprising that he went this far into free agency you know just having won a cup with Florida and not the tereno of old where at one point he was talked about you know this is the closest thing the league will have to datsuk in terms of a Russian star and his skill set but still a heavy offensive contributor and Detroit lands him two-year contract $4.75 million per year shortterm $9.5 million total four under 5 million at 4.75 million on the cap what are your reactions thoughts analysis how does this fit into Steve eisman’s plan little bit of surprise because it was reported that he wanted to stay in Florida but they obviously couldn’t make it work who knows what the holdup was there could have been aav could have been the term I know tereno has a young family so a little a little bit of stability might have been a deal breaker for him my first reaction was there’s your Pon replacement a slightly younger slightly more productive David pan completely different players not comparable at all in terms of style but it solves a problem as we talked about last episode the free agent Market got picked clean immediately what was left after last episode was Vladimir tereno and then a bunch of old guy Flyers you’re Max Patti maybe he’s something James Vander de maybe he’s got something left in the tank and don’t get me wrong I’m not saying terle is a world beater here I I expect him to score 20 goals give or take you know 45ish points give or take and that’s about market value for just under five mil so I’m a okay with that he’s excellent off the rush which is a huge weakness of the Red Wings so I’m excited for that but obviously he has next to no defensive game but if you pair him with a Dylan Lin or a JT Comer that helps especially if you pair him with a Dylan Lin and a Lucas Raymond hypothetically it allows you to shelter him even in a prominent role I’m not going to get too hung up on where he’s going to fit in the lineup lines wise cuz cnhl and you don’t have a definitive Top Line so we’ll probably see these lines rotate every five to 10 games anyway so yeah I’m not getting hung up on it there is a nice balance in the top six now of Lefty season readies on Wing which they haven’t had for a while so that’s a plus I was happy I I thought for sure the Red Wings were going to have to go down the trade market to fill that hole because again I didn’t think the last remaining good free agent forward would choose Detroit and not to be pessimistic but history has taught us they are not usually the landing spot in scenarios like this yeah and the low term allows the flexibility if you look at the Red Wings roster Beyond the next two years there’s not a lot left so if the Red Wings need a big overhaul the opportunity is there but the addition of tereno should hopefully solve one problem in terms of how they’re going to keep Pace in the Wild Card race this year with teras enko’s play you know I talked about who he used to be and and how exciting of a player he was it’s important to note again this isn’t Prime tereno you’re getting he’s not that old but he’s not been the healthiest player and he’s dealt with a ton of injury issues and obviously this isn’t the terasen from his St Louis years but still 32 he’ll be 33 halfway through the season a bit younger than pan he still has the shot he still has that offensive touch that way and the size is there too which I’m sure they they like about him but he’s not exactly he’s not going to be doing the work in the offensive zone physically protecting the puck being great down low like Pon was but maybe they have Ambitions of him being that way but no matter which way you cut it this is the shooting and the scoring and production that they needed to kind of replace to some degree in their top six or if you want to look at it a bit more conservatively their middle six like you said Brad we’ll see how the lines shake out I think that’s going to dictate a lot of it I think you’re going to see it it’s not a oneto one with Pon you’re going to see a little give and take in some areas I think he has a chance to be more offensively productive than Pon was and pan was no slouch in that area but he’s probably going to frustrate at times with how disengaged he is maybe physically especially on defense he’s probably going to be less of a penalty liability than Pon was in terms of the ones that made you scratch your head all in all I think even though this isn’t a an exact archetypal replacement of who pan was on the team it is a necessary replacement to make sure that the Red Wings at the very least could be the team that they were last season offensively in that area nothing wrong with bringing in a guy who’s won two Stanley Cups as well right like he brings a lot of experience that some of these young guys especially the new young guys who Steve Eiserman alluded to are well he explicitly stated that are going to be in the roster next year I think there’s Big Value in having a guy like tereno in the lineup and he was you know rather efficient in Ottawa on a bad team he had 41 points in 57 games in Ottawa that’s perfectly capable and a perfect addition for the Red Wings so very intriguing signing definitely did not see that one coming but I think it’ be a great addition to the team I would view his range at 50 points isn’t the floor but I think it’s very very very attainable we’ll see how the Red Wings offense shakes out because as you mentioned Brad who he’s paired with and how that kind of chemistry Works will dictate a lot of that I could see him having a fantastic season and going north to 60 or more maybe he’s a sneaky 253 go guy you never know but the that’s a lot of offense added this is like the the moves the Red Wings have made or were gun to make if you think about Stam Co and now Kane and and teraso this is just like going through the last 10 to 15 years and checking all the boxes of when we were younger going oh what if the Red Wings added this guy on another team and it’s not a knock on it yeah he’s older now it’s not the tereno used to have but it’s just funny how hockey Works always fun to pick up a couple of New York Ranger Legends so how does this change the offense in your mind like Brad you talked about it’s shortterm he has a no trade clause first year the next year he has a modified no trade clause I believe it’s an eight team trade list still where does that put the immediate next season Red Wings offensively in your mind they’ve shipped out a lot of production they’ve brought in some does this kind of bring them back to where they were or do you think they’re going to maybe have some figuring out to do they definitely have some figuring out to do because one there’s going to be a whole new flavor to the offense this year again tereno is only one player but he’s damn near the polar opposite of a David pan I know last year the Red Wings themselves and us and anybody with eyeballs who watched the Red Wings noted this team really did not like to shoot the puck as much as they probably should have not going to be an issue for tereno and if Raymond and de Brink could have a mandate to let it go a little more that could create more of a high volume offense with tereno obviously being one of the leaders in that department again Lefty righty gives the power play more of a balanced approach because they can have good options on both half walls on both power plays now which wasn’t in the cards last year but that all comes with the expected regression that the Red Wings were going to have they were on a bit of a shooting percentage heater last year they outpaced their expected goals like their actual goals was higher than their expected goals usually that’s not a th% but it’s a pretty good indicator that yeah the every light on the dashboard not be lighting up but there’s a couple so I I don’t think they’re World beaters I think if if if if the Red Wings are going to see any Improvement in terms of goal production it’s going to have to come from an unexpected Source uh Carter merer jumps into the lineup and chips in 15 or 20 goals that you weren’t expecting Jonathan Barren Pops in for 35 40 assists that you weren’t expecting neither of those things likely to happen I’m sure we’ll talk about it when we get to fabri I don’t even think there’s a spot for the team for a merer or a Casper right now but some one who you don’t think is going to produce is going to have to produce otherwise I do see a slight regression on the horizon and in terms of price I we mentioned it not that it matters entirely right now like you still have to see where the cider and Raymond contracts come in it was as expected for a guy of teras enko’s stature with the production he’ll bring so shortterm means you don’t stress too much if you think it’s a little high but it was about where the markets were projecting ter would come in cap hit wise let’s now jump over talking about capit to the trade that we kind of hypothesize is happening for a long time now which is Robbie fabri as a cap dump to the Anaheim Ducks so the Ducks acquired fabri full contract no retention by Detroit and a 2025 fourth round pick which is conditional Anaheim will receive the earlier of Detroit’s own 2025 4th round pick or Boston’s 2025 fourth round pick and an exchange Detroit cut and this he’s a a throwing in the deal you know not a player of consequences is a an organizational depth goalie but goenda Gage Alexander we were joking online Brad like just acquire more goalies that’s the next move to come yet another goalie even after talbat and Campbell and the goalies Detroit already has and another goalie was thrown someone’s got to run the net with Carter gylander and Toledo yeah it is what it is you knew a move was coming I would have preferred it not be fabry but given the addition of tereno and Tyler M forward group was pretty full we’ve all been sitting here as a fan base as a podcast banging the table we need rookies in the lineup at some point it’s looking pretty full so you look at you know 14 15 NHL caliber forward sitting there Robbie fabry putting up sub20 goals for $4 million it probably was the obvious Target so Stevie calls up his old buddy Pat Anaheim to do him a favor it’s almost a like you know you’re what 750,000 away from a one to1 offset with tereno a okay with that we’ll get into the roster in a bit more detail but yeah it it it had to be done it’s a shame because I think fabri is good depth scoring was 4 million a bit Rich yeah but not by so much where he he was like you’re pointing to the lineup and saying yeah fabri is the problem I think it’s probably a lot easier to have made this move now when he played 68 games compared to previous Seasons where he missed a ton of time with his injuries but still it sucks to see Fab go like he did what they asked him to do I think he probably would have cracked 20 with more opportunity up the lineup he didn’t exactly break in but he was useful in his depth roll and and I think that was important for Detroit and it’s also good to know like Fab wasn’t a perimeter scorer that was just a dime of dozen I think he actually went to the hard areas More Than People appreciated he he knew where to be what spots to be in especially to pick up rebounds too in the latter of those two attributes I actually think Jan berren has himself so they could replace a little bit of that in berren but still you hate to see fabri go the the the meme was the trade was one for one between fabri and De Rose and he was exciting in Detroit and when he was healthy fans loved him for a good reason and the the Red Wings lost one of their best set of eyebrows on the team too so you got more than that loss after trading athu years ago trading fabri now Joe valeno is probably sweating bullets on arbitration yeah we no the the eyebrow game it’s it’s getting it’s at risk he’s gonna come into arbitration with some nice thin eyebrows it’s going to get him threaded is that what it is yeah yeah it it’s a shame but you all you have to do is look at the cap structure and say if Eiserman and the Red Wings wanted cap space which they if you look at the moves Eiserman made and how he’s positioned this team all the signings he’s made for the most part like oneyear deals a few two-year deals like he is positioning this team to have the most cap flexibility possible and that’s part of why last episode we said if you’re hard on the Red Wings and what they did or didn’t do in free agency you have to at least appreciate that they didn’t do another fron neelon deal there wasn’t a cop deal in there like he stayed away from the long-term contract so he’s making sure he has that cap flexibility so this this all lines up with that yeah and I know the Red Wings have north of 20 million in cap space right now which would puzzle a lot of people why are they cap dumping it cannot be repeated enough until it happens a good chunk at least 75% of that is earmarked for Raymond and cider who do not have contracts as we speak and in a perfect world Patrick kan’s cont contract is structured that he’s probably going to hit a few bonuses way better for the organization if those get absorbed into the cap hit this season rather than rolling over and yeah you want the flexibility for those longer term deals it might be less than what’s earmarked for cider and Raymond if they take the bridges but it’s better than being forced into that direction because Eiserman has said that’s his preference like he he let that out with Raymond where he said we want to go long term and if the player doesn’t want to do that then we’ll look at other options something we also haven’t talked about in terms of cap flexibility is you know once you get past cider and Raymond and and the team is largely set for this next season borrowing another move there’s some big names potentially coming on the market not just in free agency there might be big names available in trades and the Red Wings are getting into a space now where it makes sense to gun hard for those guys you might get sick of hearing his name but until something happens he’s going to be at the top of the list Marner ranin dry cidal even though you know likely to stay in Edmonton what whatever name is coming up there Detroit doesn’t want to be on the outs and not have the flexibility to go for those guys so that’s going to be the next you know not tinfoil hat Theory but that’s the big dreaming that Detroit fans and and what we’re going to talk about coming up here and that’s strategic that’s what you want Detroit to be positioned to do yeah and the sad reality is they’re not in a good cap space right now overall the red have mostly one in two-year contracts throughout their lineup obviously Raymond and sat are going to get longer than that you still have a few too many years on cop and comer got a few but beyond that there’s there’s not a lot of term but for next summer there’s a surprisingly few amount of one-year deals and most of them are fairly cheap and inconsequential so some cap gymnastics will still have to be done if the Red Wings do in fact want to go big game hunting next spring it doesn’t look like cap gymnastics that can’t happen though all look very maneuverable after this year you’ve got one year left of Justin Hall you’ve got one year left of Ben sherro villy huso comes off the books Andrew cpps contracts at a point where a bio probably starts to make a bit of sense there will be a lot of options to shed and this is going to sound harsh but shed dead weight off this roster again not that any of these players are bad individually but collectively they make a lot lot of money for not a lot of what you actually get on the ice and cap gymnastics will be done also say the line the cap will go up too all right we talked about Joe valeno elected for arbitration he was the only Redwing to do so jonim berran notably for example didn’t and that starts a process now where there’s still could be a settlement between now and the hearing dates as the hearing dates are set we’ll have more updates for you and they happen over a span of time it’s not all going to happen on the same day and so the Red Wings have between either July 20th and August 4th depending on when the the hearing date is set for and they have until then to to negotiate with Joe valeno but still if he goes through the arbitration process then it’s not always like this but it’s typically somewhere between what the team puts forward and what the player puts forward in terms of their desired contract on a deal now that is what it is and to put it simply Joe valeno is not going to be a big money maker just based on production he’s going to be getting the arbitration award if it gets that far for a depth lineup player and that’s not a knock on Joe valeno that’s just who he is the big thing is this opens up a buyout window with conditions that Detroit could potentially use here and so if you look at you know how this works I’m going to read out cap friendly clubs are permitted to perform a buyout outside the regular period during the 48 hour period beginning on the third day after the final of a the settlement of the club’s final arbitration case Detroit only has the one or B the receipt of the club’s last arbitration award so I oversimplified it but in general they might have a window here to work with notable though Justin Hall’s contract is not eligible to be bought out he doesn’t make enough money it is for contracts north of $4 million and so really the only eligible candidate here that you would think realistically would happen would be vly huso who has one year remaining at $4.75 million there are other players who theoretically could be bought out but vly husos is the one that people would potentially be looking at and given the cost of how much it is to dump bad contracts in the NHL right now I think everybody can just settle in and anticipate Justin Hall being at Detroit Redwing this year yep and it’s up to the team to make sure that that works so you still have some concerns on what’s going to happen on the right side and and where Petri is deployed and what have you but ideally it’s not as like I think the best case scenario here is that they’re able to deploy Justin Hall in a way and and this might be called a pipe dream by some but you’re able to deploy him in a way where he plays games and then it’s easier to sell him to other GMS as hey he can actually help your lineup but as it is right now depending how those games go you shelter yeah it it’s cuz here’s the there’s a reason he he wasn’t easily moved yeah the The Ugly Truth here is they have three right-handed shooting defensemen that are going to be in the NHL this year and you have to pick one of Jeff Petri or Justin Hall to play on your second pairing unless you fill up the yeah they’re probably going to be trotting out four lefties a night in all likelihood collected a lot of those left-handed defenseman and goalie they have not what six of them right now that could play in the NHL and that’s not even counting wer or the other young long shots in Grand Rapids Fun you shoot Left Right Evan I do so you would have been more likely than me to be signed to the Red Wings this Summer that is true yes not withstanding that we’re both pretty terrible at hockey I played on the right side though so you were you were opposite side yes how did you find that not good I was I was going to say I hated playing the left side he stood there for the one T’s and everything else was a let down yeah coming around the net on your backhand is a recipe to get blown up the fear when you have to go reverse is is real y that is Detroit’s contract situation with tereno coming in fabri going out volo’s arbitration case and potential biot window and with berren you know not a lot doing there although there has been a lot of positive kind of conversation from Ain about berren we’ll get into that momentarily first let’s hear a word from our sponsors of the winged wheel podcast this show is sponsored by better help draft and then free agency and the Stanley Cup Final and with news dropping we knew it was going to happen at an unideal time it wasn’t just the Terra senko signing and the fabri trade the Red Wings also signed Tyler M which we didn’t forget about but just in the scope of covering everything that happened right after we recorded we forgot to actually distinctly mention Tyler M it was a one-year deal 800,000 so you’re you’re not talking a lot on the cap hit but that is a depth of the lineup player in all likelihood Tyler mod is a player you are getting a penalty kills specialist an incredibly capable defensive player and there are bigger questions here which we’ll get into when we get into the Eisman presser conversation and where this team is and how much room for rookies but if you look at you know fans of other teams or or Tampa Bay they’re pretty sad to lose M like he does his job really really well he’s a rural guy but is a very effective rule guy 29 years old so Tyler m is it’s not a massive needle mover but it speaks to what Eisman was looking to add in in terms of Team Defense Michigan yeah yeah if Michigan Redwing more m michig yeah but in all honesty like there’s there’s more to the signing than just the typical Michigan thing but it you did have to laugh add goalie add Michigan and both those things happen in Spades for Detroit hey it’s not like the Red Wings also don’t have a penchant for falling in love with super defensive forwards one year 800,000 is a perfectly fine way to fall in love that is that is you buy them an extra scoop of ice cream on your date not you know you buy them a house and tattoo their name on your chest after three dates the qualms I had with this signing had nothing to do with Tyler mot or the amount of money they’re paying him yeah good player good for what he does he’ll be effective in his role exactly let’s get into ean’s conversations with the media he had his press conference we mentioned before he hadn’t spoken to the media yet which indicated he was still working on other stuff which is historically accurate for Eiserman M tereno namely the Fab retrade and then he spoke with the media on the 4th of July so that was I had to laugh a little bit when by then everyone had held out on vacationing for as long as they could I was actually visiting Mount Vernon when the pressor started so I was like I can only you know I’m going to have to watch this back later but still we did hear from Steve Eiserman and not too many surprises in terms of what he said I think to start off one of the things that was interesting unsurprising but still interesting to think about is that they were in on one of the major names in free agent but it just didn’t make sense with the roster and they’ have to do too much surgery roster and cap wise so a few names get thrown around there I I think Steven Stam Co is the most like bold well the loudest name but there are a few other options I could have made sense marsho could have made some sense but we’ll never truly know I am fascinated to know the thought process behind everything that transpired like does Kane or tereno happen if they don’t swing and miss or they don’t think they’re going to swing and Miss on whoever this big name was I think Kane does I think teras senko if it’s a forward no and it wasn’t a strong defense group so I I would guess it was a forward if we’re talking big name well I I think there were a lot of names out there on defense and there were actually a massive amount of years and dollars shelled out on defense too so I actually think it could have been a defenseman there were some names that were thrown out there that you know were interesting and I thought oh that one makes sense too but it I I think stamp Coast is still just the whole you’d have to do surgery thing that to me screams Stam Co four years at $8 million like that’s a lot of money Marsh is a more term but much less money on the cap too Eiserman did also say that he’s not ruling out another move and you know everyone’s pointing to De Brink it last year happened on what July 9th so so a couple days from now at least but he’s not working on anything at the moment You’ take all this with a grain of salt how much does Steve Eisman actually willingly share almost nothing it’s usually pretty calculated but this seems to be the roster largely as it is barring a a major move and Eiserman kind of said what we said earlier he feels largely about this team the same way he did last season you know he he noted that he wants some improvement on team defense and he thinks that they will get that with the additions and changes that they made and he’s hoping that the addition of teraso and improvements from guys like you know Raymond continuing to progress and obviously teraso and berren in the lineup and he noted Barren which I thought was interesting will offset the loss of production as well but he said like this is still a team where if they stay healthy and they get good goal tending and and have good chemistry then they’ll have a shot at the playoffs so to me that’s the same tier the same category as the previous season Red Wings yeah I think anybody with common sense looks at this roster and realizes how similar it is to last year because first of all there’s not a dramatic amount of turnover and in a lot of instances you can one to one replace the guy Gosa spare gone guson in pan gone ter senko in like you can see the exact correlation of what they were thinking I think this team’s going to score a little less but I like their goal tending situation better not that cam Talbot’s going to be a world beater but he was definitely better than any Red Wings goalie last year and he’ll give them a bit more stability and if Li is streaky again but only playing 35ish games that’s very very okay so little bit offensive regression little bit of goal tending progression yeah you’re probably hovering somewhere around 88 to 93 points again depending on on health and progression of some young guys now I do think there’s obviously and we talked about the outlier potential of any individual player last episode and in previous episodes and I think the same applies for overall team results maybe they they come out and they just everyone improves to the nth degree and some other move happens and cider is just so freed up on defense that he then takes the next big step kind of like we saw Raymond take a lot of things can happen where yeah maybe 95 996 99 it’s not out of the realm of possibility but you know you look at the numbers like you said Brad you just look at what went out what came in the kind of players will guson work on the right side I actually really laughed when Max asked him if they think guson will work on the right side he’s like we’re going to find out I love when iser’s serious answers are presented as jokes he’s like and that’s like that’s the most honest he’s like yeah well there’s no hiding anything like this is very obviously the experiment we’re doing you can see the roster we’ll find out the same time as you exactly but yeah I this is largely and Steve Eisman said it himself the same position they were in last year and I’m going to couple this with Eisman noting that he feels some pressure but it still made sense to keep the course this is it kind of goes back to what we talked about last episode like you can be frustrated that they didn’t make the moves to get themselves you know decidedly into this is a playoff team or should be playoff team position but the flip side of that coin that you still have to acknowledge if you hold that very reasonable position is you didn’t want him to go out and shell out a ton of years and way too much money for Stam Coast or let’s say If you think Roy got overpaid in for agency which is maybe another name that could have he was in on he’s it’s a holding pattern he’s holding his cap flexibility for future years he’s holding the the cap space for a long term I in his hopes long-term cider and Raymond contracts it’s interesting to note that he feels a little bit of the pressure and I think you’re seeing that reflected in some parts of the fan base too but yeah that the there’s no surprises really in what he said in the press conference because there’s no surprises in terms of how the roster construction and I think you can look at that as a frustrating thing but also a good thing depending on the angle it can be a good strategy when you’re watching every other GM in the league seemingly just throw money at UFA crop this year so it’s it’s a lot of what we’ve come to expect from last year’s Red Wings which is fine I think the teams around them have improved as well so it’ll be very interesting to see if they can make the playoff race but I think one nice aspect that we didn’t have last year is we get to watch Simon Edinson for the full year and we get to maybe see what we’re going to get out of a full-time bearr what does Albert Johansson bring so there is a nice new element to this team as well also hopefully a full season of Patrick Kane as well because he came in halfway through last time so that’s all really good to knowe another thing that Eiserman mentioned and talked about and obviously you can see like M being the most recent name in this space but team defense yeah it never feels fun to sacrifice ghouls in production and Brad outlined you know statistically the things that they’re going to be battling to keep the same kind of offensive output they had last season but improving on team defense uh it’s been a big bug for the Red Wings for a while and they don’t exactly have the defenseman themselves to be irresponsible defensively or have that luxury and so I I think it’s important to focus on that and the other benefits it could have is you might give your goalies a bit of an easier time like I I don’t think you can rely on hoo and lion for 82 good games in all likelihood now they brought in cam Talbot which will alleviate that Campbell is poised for the AHL but like we mentioned last episode he might get a stint depending on how things go with injuries or whatever but if your team defense continues to improve you are less likely to have goalies get caved or completely worn out for certain stretches of the season and it becomes a little bit easier to play the crease and they can shine a little more and that could help you know the net you might have lost goals but you’re probably going to avoid a lot of blowups or or blowouts yeah and systems alone can improve team defense right the the group can remain largely the same or at least fairly similar but if the system is properly executed or tweaked to be something better you can get Improvement that way as we’ve seen time and time again it’s hard to manufacture goals but there have been good teams with good coaches that have manufactured team defense and again we still don’t I think fully know what the goal tending and the defense is going to look like because right now by the contracts they sign and everything they have four NHL goalies I think it’s pretty safe to assume Campbell’s going to go to the AHL that still leaves you with three they got nine defensemen on the roster I think it’s probably a safe assumption logas goes down to Grand Rapids but they’re not they can’t carry three goalies in eight defense that doesn’t give you an extra at forward and they’re not going to run through the season with 12 forwards so it was interesting listening to Eiserman once again say almost nothing but I think he’s in a real tricky spot right now because he needs to subtract he needs to find spots for young guys Barren Edinson Johansson how many games they play who knows but they’re on the roster I would like to see at least one of Casper Danielson or merer play the majority of this season as of right now there’s no spot for them injuries happen and hey I’m not going to sit here and whine and moan and be angry about their not being a spot for them if one of them comes into camp and earns it obviously and they still send him down because of a numbers game I’ll get a little upset then but injuries happen under performances happen if Carter merer comes up in November and plays the rest of the year it’s not the end of the world that’s perfectly fine but he’s right on that tight RPP of he’s not making too big of commitments to too many players where the future is getting sacrificed it’s all shortterm the flexibility still there but also it’s a very sensitive time you can’t wait too long with a lot of these guys look at what’s happening with Barren right now where dude’s almost 30 years old not literally but and finally getting his NHL made people go like go to hockey DB real fast but he is in his mid-20s like that’s not even an exaggeration like it’s it’s way past time and we’ve seen in the NHL time and time again it’s not the old school players start to get ready for the NHL at 23 24 25 they’re the good ones the ones that are going to help you contribute to a Stanley Cup are ready to go 20 21 years old like consistently so if Danielson Casper and Maser aren’t playing by then we got bigger problems so you have to find out what they are at the NHL level sooner than later and understand there’s a difference between soon and rushing Casper’s already got three Pro years under his belt Mer’s got that full year in Grand Rapids under his belt Danielson yeah okay he might he’s the best of the group but he hasn’t played a pro season yet so it’s understandable if they want to get him in Grand Rapids but there is a risk here and they do need to find a spot for at least one of these guys now who Eiserman talked about in his press conference and has repeated this is Edinson Johanson berren is it because he wants to or because he has to I think it honestly I think it’s because he has to that was the vibe I got but I also think it’s both like I think Edinson he’s a Redwing he’s not going to like we already saw he’s a Redwing he made an impact in his limited time to contribute to the team he’s a Redwing bearr unless something changes in terms of you you move him or whatever they need to replace offense he can’t go through you know without going through waivers he’s on the team unless something changes Johanson is the one where I think he he’s saying that because it’s a little bit more that’s mostly just because he’s no longer waiver exempt as well that I’ll concede they seem to love that guy though oh yeah even bringing his names up his name up in press conferences for two seasons at least now and I think he’s a good Prospect who will play for the Red Wing and I don’t think he’s Edinson level which is why he’ll probably be slower to to make it into the lineup full time but he’ll get there all things going well I I’m pretty confident in that I I’m just saying for Johanson I don’t think it’ll be Edmonson top four day one style deployment I have genuine concern how many games Johansson’s going to play this year because for him to get in the lineup right now the path most likely path to that is they send logus into the miners and then they would have to scratch Hall they don’t have a problem doing that no and Ma and somebody else to get him in the lineup injuries trades we saw last year you can’t you can’t it’s a good thing to not get injured but you can’t Bank on it last year was weird on defense right with the it was my opinion remains if he can’t beat those guys out then he yes who then it doesn’t matter it’s a move point you have to get the chance to beat those guys and I I’m not a betting man but but I’d comfortably put 20 bucks on the table right now he’s not going to be in the opening night lineup and I’m not saying he should but just this is how this organization has historically operated it’s one of the carryovers from the hall into the Eiserman era is the young guys don’t just have to prove they are on the team they have to kick a door down to get on their team which is a great story when it happens but that’s still a little silly in Old School like is that their case though like Edinson is a loud example and I think that was too long on son but was it the case for maybe the other side of the they literally did come in and drop kick the door into the middle of the living room so they got their run but even cider was two years to the NHL Raymond is really truly the only exception not a fair statement because obviously cider was coming up in the covid era we understand the limitations that that caused but I think mer should have got a at least a niname look last year I think Casper have gotten a look I understand they had a lot of value to Grand Rapids playoff run and you wanted them to ultimately end up there and I largely agree with that but you needed to see what they were in the NHL at some point last season and now we’re staring in the face the likely scenario where we’re not getting an extended look at them again this year I think people’s Counterpoint would be well the Red Wings are trying to make the playoffs so you can’t just inject AHL guys into the lineup but my Counterpoint to that would be I was watching an AHL team for a few months in dur during the last season so there would have I’ve I would have had no problem with them doing that I think you have to see how Camp plays out too like the expectation is danielson’s going to come in have a a relatively strong camp and then you know he’ll start the season in the AHL and you’ll see where it goes maybe he comes in and is an absolute Dynamo and they have no choice and you make a move Casper maybe same thing I but I I think it’s still the Danielson path I I don’t disagree with what you’re saying Brad but for me if the focus is on right now like Edinson AO AO sounds worse out loud than it does written down Albert Johansson yeah let’s not do that I’ll give I’ll give that one away yeah and berren that is a that’s the foundation that you that’s the bare minimum that you need to start with and that’s in my mind what they’ve committed to doing it might actually make it more difficult for those guys to get called up because they already are consuming so many rookies from Grand Rapids this is my call back to last year where we had this exact same conversation entire episode to me reminds me of this time last year cuz we were saying you let me tell you the next day right now well no because we it’s been a known problem for a while a good Problem by and large where hey you have a lot of really good prospects who are very close to NHL ready the longer you put this off eventually there’s going to be a year the damn has to break all of a sudden you’re putting five rookies in your lineup I’d rather rip the bandaid off and do it this year than keep kicking that can down the road and again my larger point being if we’re looking at Marco Casper two plus years after being a top 10 pick not being ready to make the NHL team Nate Danielson being on the older side of his draft because he’s a late birthday a year out not ready to make this team Carter masers in his 20s now not ready to make this team you have a much bigger problem it means this young core were betting on to be the future of this team guess what you don’t think they have it and I know they’re young but they’re not that young and that’s why I would have liked seeing some of these guys get looks last year when the Red Wings were in the dumps or just make a determination on what your chances are to make the playoffs because then you would at least have an idea you’re not just relying on preseason and what their training camp performance looks like compared to their peers we would have known okay Carter masers actually playing better than we expected we don’t need to sign Tyler M that that’s what I would have preferred to see in this the continual overripening of players but but hold on Carter merer Kicks Down the door in the AHL you just wave Tyler mut you bury it okay but that’s money you’ve spent for I don’t care but it’s off the cap yeah I don’t care about Chris ‘s money Ryan’s absolutely right but my only Counterpoint to that is time and time again this organization has shown they will not do that those veterans get every last benefit it’s the only critique I have of Eiserman that is the same critique I had of the previous regime they will not scratch a Fisher scratch a valeno scratch a Tyler mod hypothetically this year to get these guys into the lineup again Evans point is perfect all of December and all of March we watched an AHL team go out there and get consistently blown out by the no longer existing Arizona Coyotes and this organization went no now is not the time to get a look at these guys who by the way were on fire in Grand Rapids at the time okay but on fire in Grand Rapids who were trying to make a run of things and I yes the Red Wings had a dumpy streak in there how much of that was driven 80% by Dylan Lin being out all of a sudden in December but I think there’s I’ll let you finish your point but I think there’s Merit to when you’re in those losing streaks all of a sudden an NHL guy comes up because I think it kicks those guys in the ass a little bit to say here’s some guy trying to take your job I think we even brought that up in March and saying they need a warning shot they need now eventually which was great but the problem and we’re talking about forwards a lot right now but my ultimate point of why you have to be careful with this is playing out on defense right now because how much more comfortable are you throwing in Albert Johansson as your number six defenseman opening night if you’ve already got a full year of Simon Edinson under your belt yeah instead of parading out two rookies on defense you’re only parading out one I’m still not concerned about Simon Edinson being a full-time player this year and it doesn’t change my opinion because I if Albert Johansson is better than hall or ma fine put him in the lineup that’s great we’ve actually improved the defense if he’s better for me the it’s the forward Group which is the bigger perplexion for me because you can put Danielson on the third line you can shelter his minutes you can’t really do that with a rookie defenseman all that well you can put him on the third pairing but he he’s still got to play defense in the NHL I would much prefer to we took looks at some of these guys last year for x amount of games just to see you know what do they look like in a short stint and again I’m not going to start flipping tables opening night injuries happen under performances happen where I’m going to start flipping tables around Christmas if we haven’t seen any of these guys okay I’ll put this forward Edinson full-time Redwing of course berren in the lineup barring a trade I think the organization has talked about it enough and they need the offense he’ll be a middle six at best Winger probably a bottom six Winger but in offensive deployments and on the power play Albert Johanson is playing call it 40% of the games and by let’s say end of January you’ve seen 10 to 20 games total of the smattering of other prospects coming up from Grand Rapids due to injury or whatever are you happy I’d like a little more than 10 to 20 and I definitely don’t want Johansson playing less than half but we’re in the range of reasonable at that point I think that is within the realm of possibility and the only things that could bar that from happening are Detroit is health in Detroit is doing well and at that point like you’re you’re your very valid points of you know you need looks at these guys eventually you need to work them in eventually they stand but it’s kind of what you ran into last season of it’s they’re doing well and so you you don’t really mix that up I agree I would have liked to have seen an injection somewhat I don’t think they would have changed much but you want to see the injection of the youth especially during the low points and and that’s what I hope would go differently this year I mean I hope the low points aren’t as long and obvious as they were but I don’t know I I don’t think I’m not panicking yet and that just could be because I’ve done you know 12 hours of travel today and I’m too tired to to be preemptively you know anxious about it I think there’s still a whole offseason of potential moves to be made and I think you need to see how Camp plays out and and see who earns it I don’t think it’ll happen but if Casper and Danielson and maer all come out and have god- awful camps and this is a moot point because you don’t want them to be on the team what if they don’t then then you evaluate what the GM does and and how are you going to reward this even if it can’t be right away but by you know if they have obviously outgrown their time in in Grand Rapids are they going to be down all year again and then yeah it’s a fair point and come back and throw eggs at me but I will write that in my yeah again my my whole point right now isn’t this absolutely has to happen my whole point is here’s the problems that are going to arise if it doesn’t and it’s either hey the core of this team might actually be bad and you have bigger problems or yeah like here here’s the hypothetical with the way the roster is constructed now we’ve seen the progression of Danielson Casper merer to the point we have a reasonable expectation of where they should be at the end of this upcoming season and I think for all three of them with certainty we can say if they spend the full year in Grand Rapids they are 100% beyond a shadow of a doubt ready for the NHL next year I don’t think there’s a case to have any one of them down a year longer a game longer are you throwing all three of them in next year at the same time maybe you have to I don’t know that that might be the scenario but if the Red Wings are competitive this year I I think there’s some Grace from the fans if they take a bit of a step backwards this year the year after I don’t think it’ll be there all right also if that situation happens that’s kind of the prime time to trade one of them isn’t it if you’re if you’re making a move for an elite guy like that’s a very real option as we’ve learned time and time again trades are great and they’re awesome when it happens and those hypotheticals make a lot of sense but sometimes there just isn’t a trade partner well speaking of of prospects why don’t we jump forward to the development Camp which wrapped up God I thought you almost said Prospect profile and my eye twitched I thought too I was like what day is it what month is it Evan where do you think we are I’m going to link to Max bolman’s article with the athletic Detroit cuz he had a really good write up in summary but in general some takeaways from development Camp Nate Danielson was the guy there unsurprisingly and actually very happy for Red Wings fans showed that he continued his great great progression and development as a prospect was leading the camp on and off the ice and the Red Wings took notice of that and he stood out branz negard has a had a skate issue and he was kind of falling over the ice but did also show off his his shot who he is as a prospect like how dog he is on the puck a Workhorse in general it was a good showing from him overall Max plant showed off his playmaking his vision and his skills and and also the the competitiveness you know you talk about mbn but Max plants in there too credit also and this guy gets a lot of love online and we don’t talk about him enough probably but a seventh round pick who’s making a name for himself and continues to show is EMT finny who he scored a few times in the tournament I’m pretty sure and you know showed off his shot his strong skating as well and recent signing yakob rovski that was just the the European free agent that they brought in also kind of stood out and those are the the forwards Max also noted Shai buam sandine pelico of course Anton joh Hanson and then Dylan James who’s kind of a forgotten about you know for somewhat obvious reasons 2022 second round pick but he had a a bit of a standout and then other smattering of names in there but all in all the story lines you want to see from development Camp as much as you can draw from that don’t you dare leave out the tournament winning goal I needed you to say it Brad Brady Cleveland showing his offensive player wow when I saw Brady Cleveland Tournament winning goal I the grin on my face was ear to ear I was stoked when I saw that that is you know that’s how you know like we sat here and said oh yeah next season’s going to be the same mm- no the some some Wormhole ripped open and we’re doing 2016 in a lot of ways but there’s going to be some weird stuff to indicate that we’re we’re going into a different timeline and Brady Cleveland throwing egg at us that was a specific Fu Brad goal love it we love it anyhow we’ll link to Maxx’s article read up on development Camp very quickly we can’t ignore the trade kind of made everyone’s jaw drop in terms of NHL news the Buffalo Sabers acquired from the Edmonton Oilers Ryan McLoud and you know depth you know organizational player Tyler Tulio in exchange for former first round pick Matthew seavoy we’ll get into the details of this after you know the initial reactions because I think there’s some Nuance to it but what did anyone outside of the Sabers organization see this coming nope absolutely they did not I think all Twitter was for about 20 minutes there was a series of shocked and Confused reaction gifts which felt very appropriate once said the shock set in like you understand the trade McLoud had a very strong playoff run with Edmonton all the way to game seven of the Cup finals he’s crazy fast and if you look at the Players not top end players but if you look at the Players Buffalo acquired getting faster was a clear mandate for them and they definitely Juiced up their bottom six giving up a top 10 pick for a bottom six forward you do with that information what you will but the known commodity versus the unknown commodity and we’ve made all the jokes of how many small forwards do the Sabers need because they have seemingly all of them it’s a good bet for Edmonton to make because you get a small skilled forward if there’s a team where he can break in and make that work it’s the Edmonton Oilers I don’t know if that was going to happen for him in Buffalo but both teams got what they needed now now it’s just an argument of value the McLoud part of it was a part that I was missing I knew seo’s development wasn’t to Buffalo’s liking for as much as I’m familiar with it I think it’s still too early to give up on a prospect of that much potential talent because seavoy was one of the most talented players in his range in that draft selected right after Detroit picked and so that to me I was like even if it’s not you know a World beating Prospect that’s early to give up on him the part that I was missing and I got corrected on when I I asked some people’s like you said Brad Ryan McLoud is not just a useful NHL he’s a good NHL today and the reason Edmonton was willing to give up on him is one they got seavoy and that is cheap potential and if they hit on that that is massive and two mccloud’s going to need to be paid soon because he is an effective NHL and when you’re paying dry cidal and McDavid and others you cap space is a premium an entrylevel contract is very valuable to the Edmonton oers right now Beyond just whatever Matthew seavoy could be now you know acknowledging that that Ryan McLoud probably got dumped on too much in terms of the reactions to this right away this could be a coup for Edmonton if they turn spoy into something I think the most likely outcome is that it doesn’t turn into anything and McLoud is actually on balance the more effective player if seavo is not going to pan out but there’s I don’t think it’s you know if it’s north of 50% it’s not by much if seavoy hits holy he could play with Jeff Skinner now who’s collecting small forwards I think that would be a huge huge haul and like you said Brad it’s a good risk to take for Edmonton 100% they’ve got the absolutely loaded top of the lineup where they can roll the dice with their depth a little bit it’s bit them in the when they you know threw the dice and missed yep but if it’s if it hits it’s a huge hit and again I I think McLoud was needed for Buffalo they had a severe depth issue now they have a really good third line forward so it’s the we’re willing to give up a guy who might be a really good second liner for a guy we know is a really good third liner I also had it suggested to me that McLoud could be you know middle six Edmonton that’s much much less likely left for Buffalo yeah so shocking but surprisingly made more sense than at face value all right we are going to jump into overtime on this episode of The Winged wheel podcast overtime again is brought to you by our patreon supporters patreon.com wheel podcast if you want to support the thank you as always to our patrons we have some time for some questions here before we jump into our our bonus episode recording Detroit hockey fan 14 says assuming there are no more more moves left how many games do you expect from merer Casper Danielson berren what kind of production do you expect for them so merer Casper Danielson and berren are the four names in question here Barrens I’ll say 60 games 30 points give or take merer Danielson Casper my prediction is they’re going to combine for less than 15 and if they can get a half a point per game between them I’ll be happy yeah beer I’ll say will play most of the season I I think 60 is a fair but I actually think yeah in 60 games about half a point per game maybe a bit more depending on how his power play time goes merer Casper Danielson between three I’ll be a little bit more optimistic and I’ll say 30 games between the three and yeah half Point per game is is fair enough Shori 22 new Patron thank you so much for joining the dubdub club says call me crazy but I’d still love to add zis I think he’d fit great on this roster what would that cost well you’re moving a prospect you’re moving a pick I think that is the basis of the the construction of the trade it doesn’t have to be that way but that’s just the default and the good thing is the Red Wings could afford both how much is is a question and then you’d also have to worry about you know fitting him under the cap and and whatever your future plans are but he wouldn’t be cheap you’re talking first round pick premium prospect that kind of thing which I don’t think the Red Wings are in a position right now where they can they should give up their 20 25 first cuz we talk about if everything goes right this team could get into the playoffs you can very easily see the path there mhm the unspoken thing nobody wants to talk about is I could very easily see a path to them picking top 10 as well oh if it’s a disastrous year and between the million goalies they have none of them can do it and they’re not like Lin is out a long time you know knock on wood that doesn’t happen but it can go the other way where 82 84 points is also I’d argue that’s almost more likely cuz perfect health doesn’t have happen regression where expected usually does happen at some point this roster is not young age happens like I I think it’s not like far off from 50/50 of overperforming or underperforming but I’d say the underperforming scenario is more likely slightly Jay Gollum says as an NHL player going from one team to another how much does the culture and climate environment and how it’s run from top down Etc change or matter to a player for example how much might it change for pan wman Etc do some players really care about an organization team Etc how much do you think this matters to a player and what would be the top things that are important to a guy that’s under their control or not with their career there is no linear answer here a young guy probably doesn’t give too much about the culture or that he’s like I want to make money I want to live somewhere nice I want to get along with the guys in the room an older player might look at it and go okay I want to settle down for a while now I’m looking at the stability of the organization the stability of the area the stability of the roster where can I you know put my roots in my family like there is so much that goes into this decision it’s almost impossible to list off all the reasons yeah makes you respect guys in the modern NHL more and more who are like I want to go to an organization that I think can win because it as players get more agency no pun intended and they exercise that right a little bit more the the premium markets the biggest name cities the nicest climates the lowest state income tax states etc etc they get the focus and for real reasons I mean if who’s if I was an NHL player how am I going to sit here and say I wouldn’t chase the money I you can live in a great City but work for a Bad Company though yeah yeah and that’s that’s very fair some guys don’t get to that level of thinking because they think of the dollar value and another thing is like the families matter too and so if you have the choice between you know the middle of nowhere you you couldn’t drive hours you say Winnipeg you could yes or you know somewhere with a beach a lot of people’s families are going to want the beach right and that’s just a a a generic example but I really respect guys who are like no I want to go to this organization like you said Evan it’s a good company to work for they’re going to win a cup they’re they have Conor McDavid to play with Etc in Winnipeg well no things would have to go very wrong for Conor McDavid for that to be the case it makes it all the more important for the Winnipeg of the league to be better run more tightly run organizations than the the beach organizations next question from Josh Stella says what would you think of a trade revolving around askarov from Nashville would something like Casper Augustine and berren for askarov and something else be something you’d consider to lock down the future in the crease and askarov COA hering would look great down the line nope am I crazy for thinking like askarov is a great Prospect it should be a great goalie he’s unreal but would that be worth the risk of paying premiums just to add more into the goalie space when you have kosa Augustine right now absolutely not there’s no reality the Red Wings should be thinking about that they have two premium goal tending prospects and a Severe lack of upper tier prospects up front and at defense Beyond Edinson like they need to hold on to that core with everything they got right now they can’t be going and giving those guys up for a goalie when that is probably their least pressing issue in the prospect pipeline next one here from Jack entho new Patron thank you so much for your support says is it ever a good idea to put a weak defensive power play quarterback like gosis bear or now guson as a fourth wi forward so that you have them on the roster for power plays but you got a defense minded player during a five on five and possibly even more D in the last line was a really curious thing so basically are you sticking a defense when a forward now that I’m actually thinking about it I don’t hate it some players I think it like I think that’s a that’s a forward playing defense and you need to sometimes call a spade a spade it’s really hard to do like anyone who’s played their position forward or defense for a long time you’ll appreciate the intricacies of the game that get lost when you don’t play that position all the time and amplify that to the EMP degree at the NHL level but for some guys it works Brent Burns is the extreme example it’s a lot easier to play around with that on power plays where they’re moving more and more position over time Bush Lightyear says was starting to hear some Aaron eblad rumors after day one of free agency I like the fit but not sure I like the number shoots righton has grown into a more physical role after years of unfortunate injuries maybe limiting some top end upside as a number one pick averages half a point per game in an 82 Game season thoughts on the player in the fit concerns on durability and is this just due to the trouba train going off the rails but I’m first time long time thank you Bush light years off the top of my head he has one year remaining on his contract immediate no he is going to cost a lot you are not giving up premium assets for one year of anybody I know we’ve we’ve been banging that drum for the last two months to the point where it’s obnoxious but it’s worth repeating the Red Wings are not at a point to be paying for rentals in the trade market one year free agent are a different thing entirely well when these come in I always assume with an extension and that would be the idea and for eblad it would be almost like you know drafted practically out of Windsor and he is a Michigan man then the close enough and I know his family has ties from the the region as well so I get it but still it’s what the next contract would cost and I I think he’s more named than player he’s a great defenseman don’t get me wrong but what he would command on the open market would be scary I think yeah but that’s also kind of where I’m at with a lot of these guys now it’s like let’s just see who gets to Market I’d rather overpay by a mill a year than give up a first round pick Wings in the wild says hey boys medium time listener and brand new Patron thank you very much for your support Wings in the wild and welcome to the dubdub club says very excited to join this awesome Community my question is who would be on the Red Wings all crazy eyes lineup three forwards two defenseman and one goalie the obvious locks for me are Lion in net Edinson on defense and rasmon up front whoo I think would be the one in net right are you guys out of your damn Minds you’re going to disrespect newly crowned brick Tournament champion Jimmy Howard no no no no no sorry current Red Wings okay I was going to say like congrats to Jimmy by the way the junior Red Wings winning the what’s basically the minor Olympics current H crazy eyes are we talking Evon rasmon up front but not sure who the other three would be are we talking crazy crazy or like crazy intimidating just the way that the eyes look I don’t know take your take your flavor CU Lion’s the obvious answer there CU that guy he’s missing a few screws in the best way imaginable I do think you can like hzo can make a case so maybe one of them gets put up I don’t know benat has like he he has a face of like hey I am aside from being strikingly handsome I will beat the piss out of you Christian fiser not crazy moider Death Stare he looks cuz he’s intimidating but he has that long curly hair so the offset makes it look really unsettling weirdly apathetic in physical situations like he’s annoyed and that’s not inherently scary but you are a little concerned like what do you know I just punched that guy in the face and his reaction was annoyance yeah that’s probably concerning now we have to see how the season plays out I think yeah Ford there’s not a lot of great candidates coming to mind right now if I’m being honest the eyebrows the crazy eyes oh man what is this team do we even know him anymore no I’m just kidding all right we’re going to wrap up this episode of the wind wheel podcast thank you all so very much for tuning in Steve Yzerman wasn’t done yet – Vladimir Tarasenko is coming to Hockeytown.

Tune in as we start by analyzing the Detroit Red Wings signing Vladimir Tarasenko to a 2 year, $4.75 million AAV contract, how he fits into the forward lineup alongside Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond, Patrick Kane, Alex DeBrincat, & others, the deal’s value & structure, how he replaces offense left by Perron, Gostisbehere, etc., & more (3:15).

Next, Yzerman trading Robby Fabbri to the Anaheim Ducks for cap space (and another goalie friend for Cossa, Augustine, Campbell, Lyon, Talbot & Husso) (13:00), Joe Veleno opting for arbitration & what it means for a potential buyout (not Holl) (20:10), and the signing of Tyler Motte (25:40). After that, his press conference, including thoughts on the team’s standings, chasing Stamkos or another mystery player, whether the team defense is enough to help Moritz Seider & the goalies, how Edvinsson, Johansson, and Berggren will fit in, and what roster space means for Kasper, Mazur, and Danielson (27:30).

After covering the performances of key prospects & players like Brandsegg-Nygard, Sandin Pellikka, & others at the Red Wings Development Camp (52:45), we analyze the Savoie for McLeod trade between Buffalo and Edmonton (55:15) before we take your questions and comments during our Overtime segment (59:35) – enjoy!

  1. I love 19, but copp and holl are handcuffs, cost us 91, wallman and some picks. We are now fully reliant on so many prospects panning out, which is possible, but nowhere near probable… if you have 10, lucky for 3 to work out. Don’t mind Tara, but…

  2. Even though we didn't make the playoff last season, I want to make it very clear, that the last couple weeks of Detroit hockey this team produced was some of the most entertaining games ever, and should go down in Detroit history as such

  3. Brad quickly responded, because when Evan said if Johanson can play his way onto the roster. Edvinson proved that not to be the case. When Yzerman said young guys who plays their way onto the roster, he will make room for them, is already been bullshit. You can say circumstances, i say if u say something mean it. He is going to have to earn that again by his actions. Idc whether or not their was room, Steve caused that. Its one of the bitches i have for Steve, but im still not the guy who thinks we need to get rid of Yzerman. Just had way too many years of Holland and over ripening of prospects, to not hold Steve to his word.

  4. What frustrates me the most is that when we don't have loads of injuries, that RW doesn't play their youngsters in e.i. nine matches. During an entire season, there are many occasions when this can happen. Most players are bang up or have minor groin problems all the time. Certainly S.Y does not want a very expensive press box. RW had for a long time around 6/Mil in the stands before they got rid of Kostin e.i.

Still believe that Burger will be traded together with a goalkeeper and Velano in some package deal. Also think RW will take a step back next season, don't see how RW today would be equivalent to last year. Other teams have gotten better on paper, RW has marginal improvements e.i. as a goalkeeper. However, RW has a bad history of burning out their goalkeepers e.i. Ned, Husso & Alex. Who will it be this year?

  5. Im sick of Yzerman's dumb yzerplan…… I want the kids in Detroit!!!! NOT more shitty players like Mott, Copp, Chiarot, Holl, And Maatta !!!!!!! I Dont want any more player's from The State Michigan, or U of M…..

  6. What's funny is that Berggren and Sprong were criticized for not being so good at defending and instead Kane got an extension and Terasenko was brought in for 2 years (neither of them are known for their defense). Much more salary is now being spent on similarly gifted players like Berggren and Sprong. I don't want to say that Berggren and Sprong are/would be better, but they would be cheaper and we would have saved ourselves a year in development (goal-oriented players who could have played in the third line) to see how far we would have come with this younger combination. My main criticism goes to Leonde who didn't give young players a chance and probably won't in the future.

Anyway, I'm glad we have Terasenko and Kane now and hope they can give us and the team a lot.

But, what a waste of time for the young players in the Red Wings system.

As you said, if it continues like this for a longer period of time, they are even loyal and stay in the AHL, then soon they will no longer be so young and we will never know what they would have given us, for the Red Wings team
