Mark Schlereth doubles down on Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens criticism, bashes playoff performance

Mark shareth doubled down on his Lamar Jackson and Baltimore Ravens criticism bashing his playoff performance his passing and more we talk about what he had to say and so much more come up next year on lockon [Music] Ravens you are locked on Ravens your daily Baltimore Ravens podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day welcome into another edition of lock on Ravens or daily the laer period of the offseason we are almost complete with it today’s episode of lockon ravens is brought to you by FanDuel make every moment more his playoffs winding down the Sports Stop sportsing like you want them to but this summer FanDuel is hooking up all customers the booster bonus daily that’s right there something for everyone every day all summer long this.com to get started we are back hope everybody had a great Fourth of July Fourth of July weekend Ravens are rookies report in less than a week we are almost there obviously rookies on July 13th and Veterans on July 20th with the Ravens having their opening game against the Chiefs earlier than everybody else as they are the Thursday night opening game of the season so naturally that will happen and we’ll be talking about some training camp stuff throughout the course of the week but today I really wanted to dive into some developments over the past week or so or less than a week I guess where Mark sareth talked about him earlier but he has doubled down on his the Jackson criticism and baltim Ravens criticism playoff success some passing scheme and whatnot so I wanted to talk about what he ended up having to say so we’ll talk about that in the first part of the show then in the second part of the show we’ll move into more of how is Baltimore built kind of going along with what Mark sareth had to say and then finally we’ll talk about the defensive line rotation still my favorite position on the roster so we’ll dive into a bit about what that looks like and why despite the fact the players are the same why it could look a little different this season so I don’t really know where to start with this March larth stuff for being honest because there was a lot March larth was so okay I guess let’s start with what he actually said initially there was a clip that surfaced I can’t even remember what day it was now but I think it was last Sunday if I’m not mistaken it feels like forever ago but essentially what Mark schare said was he was tired of hearing all these excuses for Lamar particularly from r fans and especially about the playoff stuff and about how Lamar is responsible for developing receivers and and whatnot so there there was a lot of controversy about what he ended up saying because not a lot of people myself included agreed with ultimately his end message now for schare and his double down he essentially took the playoff route here and talked about how his point was Lamar is under immense pressure to win in the playoffs especially because he is a two-time MVP I don’t I don’t disagree with that part that Lamar you know it’s make or break Super Bowl or bust for him if he’s talking about this season I do not agree with that if he’s talking about career sure I think Lamar does have to win a Super Bowl in order to be considered among one of the all-time greats right there is a conversation about just what that would look like and what his resume would be with or without a Super Bowl so again if it’s a career thing sure I I yes Lamar has to win a Super Bowl in my opinion in order to be considered among the all-time greats if he doesn’t it’s more so a he’s an all-time great without a Super Bowl but initially he said how you know how many first round wide receivers do you have to draft he doesn’t want to hear it they don’t get him weapons so that was the whole conversation but now the double down on that is he ended up putting out more context on that first video and talked about well it was a couple different layers if for being honest that the first first part I I mentioned but he also talked about you know you’re giving your running back six carries in the asan championship game which yes was terrible I agree but he said you know oh the Ravens basically told Lamar beat everybody from the pocket which Lamar that’s not the way they’ve been wired the way they’ve been created the team itself is being created to be a run first team but Lamar can beat teams from the pocket right it’s he can do that it’s just they are a run first team so the notion and this this goes beyond Mar shareth I just want to put this out the notion that Lamar can’t throw from the pocket or if we want to get even if we want to go back even further oh Lamar can’t throw Lamar can’t throw there are stats that back up that he can the ey test backs up that he can that has been a dead narrative for I mean even since College like he could throw in college he was just Raw coming out of college he was extremely raw as a passer and March larth did acknowledge that he has gotten better every year as a pocket passer right on this show I’m just I’m not here just to create a narrative of oh Marshall lth just bashed Lamar endlessly and that’s all he did he did have compliments for Lamar he did say he’s improved every year as a passer he did say that he loves Lamar and he thinks Lamar is awesome but his main point this time on the double down was there is a there is immense playoff pressure but that part I don’t disagree with the part is well Baltimore is built and L more can’t do this and Lamar can’t do that that’s the part because at the end of the day we if we’re talking super bowler bust for this season look I mean every season in Lam moris Prime is essentially super bowler bust but if you’re talking about Super Bowl or bust in terms of this is the only year they can win I I do not agree with that now shareth also had a couple of comments about elevating receivers again which was in the first part of the show I’m trying to find the actual tweet because he look he had big debates with Sarah Ellison who I thought debated him really well Sam and joku from Ravens Talk podcast who I thought did as well but again he said it’s the development of wide receivers dependent on the offensive system and the quarterback it’s just the way that development of wide receivers is phrased I think it look quarterbacks can Elevate receivers receivers can Elevate quarterbacks if you’re talking about development of receivers I mean sure better quarterback play you can develop receivers but that’s that’s just the wrong word I’m not putting velopment of wide receivers on Lamar Jackson I’m not putting on any quarterback I think elevating like does past Mahomes Elevate receivers does Lamar do it does Josh Allen Joe burrow Herbert I mean strout everybody does do those types of quarterbacks those Elite quarterbacks do they elevate receivers yes are they responsible for the development of these guys I I I think that’s a little unfair here if if we’re being honest so again with Mark having higher expectations for MVP sure yeah he’s due time MVP expectations will be higher for that right he also talked about how pton Manning was crushed for not being being able to win in the playoffs I know a lot of people have that comparison but at the end of the day does Lamar need to perform better in the playoffs yes is Lamar responsible for one the way that the Ravens have gotten receivers in terms you know not not going to get an AJ brown or you know uh a F Diggs or any of those guys I mean he went out there he said hey look I’d love DeAndre Hopkins I’d love Odell I’d love the play from those guys the Ravens went out there they got him Odell I think it’s it’s a transitional period for them but it just it feels like we’re not talking about some of the other quarterbacks which again will be a conversation we have I think probably tomorrow about what a former NFL running back had to say about this whole thing but to me it’s about the organization going a certain round with receivers Lamar if talking about elevating receivers he won an MVP with a rookie in mares Brown Willie Sneed Seth Roberts obviously they have Mark Andrews and those guys who were there I’m not discounting the P catchers Lam more has had the Ravens have tried to get Lamar pass catchers it’s just not in the way that I think you should get pass catchers especially when you have that quarterback on a rookie deal and again Mark said he said just read a tweet here I totally agree with that he’s gotten better every year as a pocket passer smart hard worker processes information well but he says he doesn’t understand we’re having expectations of him to play well in the playoffs makes him a monster I don’t think that makes him a monster I mean again I have expectations for him in the playoffs that he should perform in the playoffs right that is fine but the part of it is you know he said why do quarterbacks get together with their receivers to throw routes you know do you think it help develop those receivers yes it does but again Lam more does that stuff Lam more literally there was literally a clip of what two weeks ago of Lamar doing that so and again I don’t think Mark did clarify he said that it’s all on the quarterback to develop the receivers he ended up clarifying it is not that but again if he had used the word Elevate instead of develop I would be in much more agreement with him but I think it’s more the quarterback elevates the receiver I mean Lamar’s not out there teaching them how to run routes you know he’s he’s getting together with them he showing them where he wants him to go the nuances of where he likes to throw the ball but that’s not the development of the wide receiver Lamar is not enhancing their skill set he’s enhancing their play because of the balls that he throws and the quarterback that he is so I don’t know then there’s the whole stuff the stuff about the system so we’re going to get to that in the second part of the show here coming up because there is a lot about the Ravens being built a certain way and you know the system and receivers not wanting to play there which again was part of the conversation we have here so just a a ton to unpack we’ll get back to it here on lock on Ravens in the second part of the show stay tuned don’t go we be right back here first this show is brought to you by FanDuel I love sports I love him so much I never want him to stop but it’s a playoffs wind down we get fewer games and the sports aren’t sportsing like I want them to but fandel subscribe on YouTube follow along and subscribe in audio form as well and also be sure to check out lock on sports today with Peter Bowski who does a great job Runing you through all the biggest stories throughout the Sports World Monday through Friday now let’s get back into this conversation more so around how the Ravens have been built we had a similar conversation last week but now there are more comments based off what Mark lare had to say to go and talk about here so Sarah Ellison who does a great job ended up debating mark on this whole topic and ended up putting out you know a list of the receivers the Ravens have drafted over the course of their franchise history and look we we can all acknowledge it is not a good list so in terms of developing receivers obviously that’s not all on the more but you know Mark ends up saying that you know the 21 years of the Ravens history vers in the time Lamar was drafted well it’s not like it’s much better in the time Lamar was drafted and then she ends up talking about how yeah they won two Super Bowls without hitting on those first round wide receivers but they traded for a veteran and Anquan Balden who guess what without Anquan Balden do the Ravens win the Super Bowl That season we have a veteran wide receiver on this show every single week in kri Ismael who while the defense was the story of that 20201 team still having a vet like Q on that team certainly helped the offense even though they weren’t necessarily the highflying you know offense that we see the Ravens have now defense was the story but look the offense still had to score at least some points to win those games so at the end of the day the Ravens have not been a good Drafting and developing team this has been a history thing this is not just the oh Lamar gets to Baltimore and the receivers just sto developing right that’s just it’s not like Joe Flo did it I mean there were good wide receivers who developed in Baltimore under Flaco obviously Tory Smith being one of them etc etc and obviously before Flo there were a few but again I mean if you if you want me to read out some of this list here I might even read out the entire thing from 1996 to where we are now guys who the Ravens have drafted themselves James RH Germaine Lewis Patrick Johnson Brandon stokeley Travis Taylor Javin Hunter Ron Johnson Derek abne Clarence mavar darling Mark Clayton Demetrius Williams figures Justin Harper Marcus Smith David Reed Tandon Doss Tory Smith Tommy streer Aaron Mallette Michael campanero Darren Waller Rashad Perman Chris Moore Jordan lley Jalil Scott miles boyin Maris Brown James prochet Devon du Tyler Wallace Rashad baitman Z flowers and TZ Walker that list is so bad that Z flowers is already a top five wide receiver the Ravens have drafted in team history already I mean name name me five better receivers Ravens have drafted than zate flowers the sad part is a flowers has completed one season obviously Tory Smith is in that conversation right I would probably say Tory Smith is the best wide receiver the Ravens have drafted there have been some guys who have gone on to have solid careers Brandon stokeley for one there are a couple of others on this list as well but who’s had a good care I mean Darren Waller moved to tight end Maris Brown is a I mean he’s a decent receiver I put Maris Brown in that conversation too so arguably the Ravens have drafted better wide receivers for L more Jackson than they have over the course of their career in a supposedly well it is not supposedly it is a highlevel run first offense now the thing that kind of got me here what Mark had to say is again what the second segment is mainly about which is how the Ravens are built Mark ended up talking about how he called the game in 2018 when Joe flacker returned from his injury was a healthy scratch that game obviously the Ravens decided to go with Lamar and the offense was super different he couldn’t execute it yes Lamar and Joe were two different quarterbacks the offenses were two different offenses because it just you know that skill set was such it was a gap Lamar and Joe were very very different so you want to maximize the offense around the quarterback you have now he makes a point about do you want to play and a run the ball at all costs offense if you’re a free agent receiver no and I’ve talked about that for years on this show the main thing about Greg Roman or one of the main things is if you’re a free agent wide receiver you’re either trying to you know replenish your value on a one-ear deal or you’re trying to go go to a place where get a lot of targets Baltimore is not the place it was not the place under Greg Roman very very far from it but he ended up talking about he said quote John Harwell took a guy that many teams thought should play wide receiver and built an organization around him see that’s kind of the like it’s like a backhanded thing here where he’s talking about how Lamar is so awesome and you know he loves Lamar and then essentially he doesn’t straight up call him a wide receiver here but he’s like okay many teams thought this guy should play a wide receiver he built an organization around him so what he you can throw the ball effectively I I don’t see the issue is it the same offense is this an air rate offense where you can go out there and throw the ball 50 times a game and make all the receivers happy with 10 plus targets no it’s never going to be that type of offense because the Ravens lean into their identity which is run first team and guess what when they run the ball they’re very good at it now there has to be balance Lamar can throw the ball the Ravens can throw the ball but you have to lean into the run first identity because that’s what gets you there the the the passing the throwing all of that you have to have it mamora is good at it he to do it and there should be more balance but it’s just going to be like the Ravens did not get Lamar a veteran wide receiver and there were there were conversations about how that would have gone if F days that come to Baltimore probably would have been a disaster it probably would have been because he wasn’t going to get enough targets he’s a big Target guy and that’s just what it was but again I’m not blaming Lamar for having skills as a runner because he’s talented as a pass randz Runner I’m not I’m not blaming Lamar for that so that that’s kind of my thing there as well and it’s just I I don’t know it it feels like Lamar is once again getting punished for his ability as a runner where receivers don’t want to play there and that’s somehow Lamar’s fault when it is clearly on record that receivers like Lamar they would like to play with Lamar it is the offense guys are on record saying it’s the offense instead of Lamar so I just yeah it it was a multi-day thing of of Mark schare doing this and there was I still haven’t found the comment of uh of Josh Allen because there’s that whole other part of this I I thought I had it but I guess I lost it but essentially it was about here here’s stuff about Josh Allen um no idea why Diggs has gone from Buffalo the quarterback you mentioned or the quarterbacks you mentioned are considered more traditional drop back then Lamar the Lamar steadly improved in the pocket none of the guys listed even have one one MVP they all get criticism you’re just sensitive to Lamor Lamar gets more criticism than those other quarterbacks uh who who’s in this who’s in this comment Josh Allen Justin Herbert Trevor Lawrence Lamar gets more criticism than all those guys it’s it’s just true I’m not saying that those other guys don’t get criticism I mean there’s criticism to go around but to sit here and say that Lamar does not get criticized more or unfairly than a Josh Allen a Joe burrow Trevor Lawrence Herbert whatever it may be then you’re just not paying attention because Lamar gets plenty of Praise he absolutely does but it seems like his successes are minimized and his mistakes are Amplified that that’s just what it seems like I’m not saying that Josh Allen does not get criticism for the turnovers right or Trevor Lawrence for the inconsistencies or whatnot that happens but I just I I it feels to me like that part is very clear at the end of the day so Baltimore is built to run the ball there’s no secret about that it is absolutely true but that is part of leaning in and going all in for a player that has a specific skill set Lamar is a player that can throw the ball effectively he can do that no I’m not doubting that passing ability we’ve seen it on display you can watch the games he’s not going to throw for 300 yards a game part of the reason why Lamar’s looked this way as a passer or looked at this way as a passer is because he might have a game where he throws for 120 passing yards on 19 attempts but the Ravens win by 25 points because their offense is that predicated on the Run game who cares if you win the game by 25 and throw the ball 19 times does that make you any less of a quarterback if you are efficient and effective doing it even if Lamar goes 12 of 20 let’s say for 191 yards or something like that or 202 yards and the Ravens win by 27 are we discounting that Lamar can do that where he doesn’t he can impact the game in so many other ways but it’s about the system it’s just it it’s this whole level it’s multi-tiered it is so such a complicated conversation honestly I had some trouble keeping up with the whole thing as though was going on but does LAM more have pressure in the playoffs to win yes he does he should he’s a two time MVP he has to perform in the playoffs I’m not arguing that is there some level of the Ravens offense is different which means receivers might not want to play with the Ravens based off of potential Target share sure I think there’s a certain type of wide receiver that wants to play with the Ravens but I think that is Shifting the other way as we talked about last week because of Todd monin and the more balance we should see out of this team but I’m not going to sit here and criticizing Lamar for elevating receivers which he has done he has done it he’s elevated those receivers has he developed the route running of Z flowers Rashad baitman no that’s not that’s not his job his job is not to develop receivers his job is to elevate receivers and he does that so I’m sitting here defending him because there is criticism when it is due I’ve been critical of his playoff performances when it is when it is needed when he’s played well in the playoffs I’ve praised him when he’s played poorly in the playoffs I’ve criticized him but we can’t put on the blinders one way or the other and say that he is a perfect quarterback or he is a terrible one he is a great quarterback is he perfect no but he also doesn’t deserve some of the criticism he gets while deserving other criticisms so I I try to be fair I try to be just obviously it is very open-ended conversation but that’s my point of view on the whole very complicated situation coming up we’ll move over to defense though talk about the defensive line rotation still the same as last season but it could look a little different state we’ll talk about why next on lock down Ravens first this show is brought to you by eBay Motors passion drive and somewhere in the middle welcome back into the show just hit 7,000 subscribers a couple weeks ago we are on the road to 8,000 now another big milestone there so if you want to be a part of the lock Ravens community really really appreciate that building this up actually my 5year anniversary of hosting the show is coming up in just about a month and I’ve not missed one 1,286 consecutive episodes today so we’ll be talking Ravens we always talk Ravens five days per week not missing not on any content there now let’s talk a bit about the defensive line rotation I’ve been on record for a while saying that this has been my favorite positional group on this roster and it it’s just it’s the Perfect Blend to me of veteran in Talent with young Talent it just it feels that way and obviously the way that they performed last season only reinforced that Justus man of BK was the star last season 13 sacks and his pure breakout year we I mean this is what we were hoping for we had seen the flashes we saw the potential but we were all wondering well is this is this ever going to be the full Justin metab we gonna ever get that and we we certainly did he won fast he won hard and he was just a Havoc wreaker re he wreaked havoc all the time last season I know that a lot of people have worries about his run defense I thought it was better than some people thought it was but obviously his strength is as a pass rusher and he got rewarded with that Mega contract very early on before fre agency started this off season but it’s not just matab I mean you have rck Washington who was a little bit of a disappointment for me I just he signed the extension and I didn’t really notied him a ton last season not to say he didn’t do anything but I just I expected more based off of the extension and it really felt like he wasn’t making as big of an impact as I thought maybe it will be a bit different this season but I don’t know what his his role is going to be because honestly the player that I expect to get the big role here is Travis Jones and for me Travis Jones is the player that is my pick I’ve been on this for a couple of months now honestly really since the season ended he’s my pick for breakout player of the year for this Ravens team he is incredible as a pass rusher he can move lineman he has an array of pass rushing moves he’s quick off the line he has that power to him but also as a run Defender he’s extremely solid I mean he is a two-way player for this team and I expect him to get major role especially or a major role especially with Michael and I know it’s not a one- forone tradeoff right with some of these guys but I expect the Ravens to manage Michael Pierce snaps a little bit more and I expect the younger guys to step up more so Pierce was in my opinion the most underrated player on the Ravens last season he was so good for them whether it be eating up double teams taking up space in the Run game he also pushes the pocket he has an underrated pass rusher where his stat his sack stats aren’t going to show that necessarily but he is still a guy that you must account for if you were an offense in terms of pass rushers so that’s where it is it’s it’s Five Guys right it is matab it’s Pierce it’s brck Washington Travis Jones and Bren Urban is the fifth and that is a very steady defensive line rotation in one that I expect to again have a major major impact for this team this season because I think again and I’ve said this before when you talk about pass rush I think everybody just looks to outside linebackers and and looks to the edge position and says well oh yeah the Ravens you have to get all your production from vanoi and O and ajabo and all these guys and that’s their pass rush well no interior pass rush I mean that’s that was the Ravens bread and butter last season with matab and all those guys outside pass rush and interior pass rush work hand inand together I get sacks are important but you can talk about pressures as well and hurries and knockdowns and whatever Advanced stats you want to talk about and just basic stats too the Ravens to me have a balanced defensive line both in terms of run Defenders and pass rushers young talent and Veteran talent and that to me is Wyatt is one of the better rotations in the league and my favorite spot on the roster but I do expect Travis Jones to have more of a role this season right they’re not going to decrease metab BK’s role they not I mean I think in terms of just saving Michael Pierce they probably should and I expect they will but Travis Jones to me that’s a guy I’m watching out for I I will shout it from the rooftops I think Travis Jones is going to have an absolutely incredible season this year that’s all I happy here today though KN Ravens really appreciate everybody for tuning in again be sure to subscribe here on YouTube and hear in audio form as well whether you are watching or listening whether they appreciate the community whether you are 1. The offensive system has never truly been WR friendly. LJ definitely needs to improve with his delivery of the long ball as well as hitting receivers on time and in stride.

  2. Facts are facts lamar is overly and unfairly criticized by guys who will ride qbs with less on their resume. How many times have we seem lamar left off these guys top 5s? There aren't 5 qbs better than lamar but they'll put these guys above Lamar and for what? Let's not discuss #1 because we know who owns that spot. #2/3 usually go to burrow and allen. Burrow has a sb appearance and that's it. Will his career be defined by that? A loss in the sb puts him above a 2x mvp who was 1 game away from being where burrow was?

Allen has done nothing that lamar hasn't. He's only made it as far as lamar has and has none of the accolades. What makes allen better?
I've seen herbert put ahead of lamar. They'll say lamar needs to win in the post season and have guys like herbert, dak, and / or Lawrence above him.
    It's bs

  3. I think raven fans are too sensitive…its also on record that alot of free agents come here alot because of harbs…& harbs numbers show he is one of the best… but fans still dog him!
We know lamar is great he has just had some bad games in big moments…same as coaching staff…but in todays age you have to be able to point the finger at someone whether its harbs, lamar, decosta…who ever we want to be the scapegoat

  4. Lamar is damned if he does…damned if he doesn’t. They claim he needs to improve as a QB but when he misses VOLUNTARY OTAs to train with a QB Coach, it’s still a problem! Notice how they said NOTHING about Philip Rivers throwing motion when he played…..and he won NOTHING!
