Steelers Rumors: Should Pittsburgh PASS On WR, Roll Over Cap For 2025? + 3 New Free Agency Targets

[Music] Steelers fans it’s good to be back I am back for my vacation there in Minnesota it was nice to get a little bit of a break but it’s also nice to be back here talking Steelers football with you guys with today’s slate of Steelers news and rumors first up we’re going to be talking about the possibility of Steelers GM Omar Khan rolling over some cap to the 2025 season think it might be a pretty good idea we’ll discuss it at the top of today’s show then we’ll get into more Russell Wilson slander from ESPN I’m going to tell you why it’s wrong and then we’ll finish up today’s show with three new Steelers free agency targets that we have not talked about on the show so make sure you guys don’t go anywhere and before we get into today’s content I do want to announce here our live schedule and we are back with the Vengeance this week baby Coupe is back he’s the NBA season is over the NBA free agency period is pretty much over so we got Coupe pretty much back full time so Coupe it’s great to have you back my friend uh but this week Wednesday 4:30 p.m. eastern time we are back on Steelers talk live it’s going to be great we got that brown stream Thursday Night Football then Thursday Paul SK live we’re going to go live 2 pm eastern time it’s an afternoon game against the Milwaukee Brewers and then Friday for the third straight day in a row we’ll get into another Steelers talk live show there 4:30 p.m eastern time where we’ll have our Madden Sim against the Bengals CPE it’s good to be back you got anything you want to say uh you don’t want to miss this week fellas that’s all I’m going to say about that oh by the way I was in for those of you that watch our live shows Kiran cold will be back this week and he told me he he’s going to have some legendary the news and rumors of the day starting with the Pittsburgh Post gazettes Brian bco here he suggested that the Pittsburgh Steelers should roll over some of their available cap space for the 2024 season over to the 2025 season here so we’re going to go over some quotes here it’s going to take a little bit of a while but I’m going to stay on screen here we’re just going to go through this together so first thing he says here I think rolling overc cap to 20125 could make sense for the Steelers because it’s very difficult to tell what they’re going to be in 24 because of the quarterback situation uh or quarterback position you don’t really know what you’re going to get from Russell Wilson I don’t know that even the most glass full glass half full fans are expecting them to be legitimate Super Bowl contenders but maybe Wilson gives you enough you can build on and you’ll want him for his age 36 and 37 Seasons uh well you’re not going going to get him on this unprecedented vet minimum deal you’re going to have to Pony up for him at that point if it is Justin Fields who ends up taking the Reigns and plays well you’ll have to do the same and he’s even younger depending on how well he would play you’re going to need to open the safe and the third possibility which is a very real one is that neither one of these guys proves to be your long-term starting quarterback or even your 2025 starting quarterback so then what do you do do you go back to the table in the draft and try to write your wrongs from the Kenny picket from Penny picket pick or do you have to go uh to the open market and say all right we’re going to have to pay one of these free agents like the Falcons did this year with Kurt Cousins like a team uh like like the team might do next year with Dak Prescott there’s just so much that’s unknown and I think having the financial wherewithal or at least more than you’d have otherwise if you try to spend the cap this year could benefit this team and what could be a crucial 2025 so I mean I do think 2025 will be crucial but we got to take care of 2024 first but I do think think that batco has a bit of a point here because right now the Pittsburgh Steelers do have quite a bit in 2024 cap space per overthe cap it’s sitting at just below $16 million and you know Omar Khan doesn’t necessarily have to put that entire pot and roll that over into 2025 he can just maybe put in like say 10 million right because right now you look at the cap space for 2025 you got about 77 million okay so that’s quite a bit of money already and even if you just put 10 $1 million over to next season I think that’s something that the Pittsburgh Steelers could absolutely do is put $10 million uh over to uh the 2025 season that puts you in the $87 million conversation there which is going to give you plenty of space for a Russell Wilson extension or a Russell Wilson contract if that happens a Justin Fields contract if that happens paying guys like cam Hayward and of course Alex heis Smith’s contract is getting expensive and potentially going out and getting another receiver in free agency or via trade next offseason that extra cap space could certainly uh be helpful and if Omar Khan doesn’t want to use that cap space on a receiver or something this year then I do think it makes sense to roll that over to the 2025 season now he might be saying Jack yeah but we we have 16 million available in cap space but don’t we need a wide receiver shouldn’t we spend some of that cap space on a new wide receiver well I think there’s certainly a case against going out and getting a wide receiver at this point in time uh and I do think that I think this wide receiver uh depth chart heading into uh the 2024 season is going to be interesting right because you look at just the wide receivers uh in this rotation here it’s going to be some sort of rotation between George Pickins who’s going to be your number one and Roman Wilson Calvin Austin third van Jefferson quz Watkins Scotty Miller all these guys are going to be competing for you know positioning in this wide receiver room but I think when you take Pat firemouth and you interject him here into the pass catcher conversation here I think Pat fouth is essentially your number two wide receiver and given everything that we’ve heard about him during Steelers OTAs and the connection that he is starting to build with Russell Wilson this looks a lot more Rosy than just looking at the wide receivers because Pickins is a legit number one firemouth I think you can argue it as a legit number two Roman Wilson as a rookie coming in here I think you can make an argument he’s going to be a really solid number three and Calvin Aus the third and fan Jefferson provide different flavors for rotational pieces in this offense and this Steelers offense is going to be very runhe heavy anyway so maybe it makes more sense to just you know unless you’re getting a guy like Brandon auk or DK metf or Tyler Locka unless you’re getting a big name that’s a clear upgrade I think there’s definitely an argument to be made that the Pittsburgh Steelers should just roll over a large portion of their available 2024 cap space so that they have more money available to them for the 2025 season but what’s that you guys let me know down there in the comments section should the shift over to some slanderous comments made against new Steelers quarterback Russell will by ESPN’s Jordan ran here on his radio program where he had this to say about the new Steelers signal caller I think Wilson is barely a starting QB in the NFL at this point of his career like when he lost his Mobility that was maybe Russell Wilson’s best attribute and I don’t think he has it anymore I think at some point you will see Justin Fields Russell is not Dynamic anymore now I do disagree with Jordan on this one and you guys know that I have been an advocate even before the Steelers signed Russell Wilson I said they should go out and get him because he is perfect for what the Steelers are looking for in a QB somebody uh that has experience in the playoffs Super Bowl experience performs well in the clutch he’s got a great deep ball all these great things and I just think that his best uh attribute is actually not his athleticism and it never has been it’s been his deep ball he has made his living off of play action deep shots even going back to Seattle and then yeah he used to be a really great playmaker and maybe that area of his game is diminished a little bit but here in Pittsburgh man he’s just going to be asked to to just throw that deep ball off of play action which we know he can still do he did it a lot last year there with the Denver Broncos and to make plays in the clutch which he always has been able to do and another thing here guys is that Russ isn’t completely immobile all right it’s not like he’s completely lost that that attribute of his game he can still move around last year he was 10th among quarterbacks and rushing points above replacement at 5.8 uh points above replacement uh so this is not somebody that is like a Lamar Jackson type Superstar rusher or anything like that but he can still pick up first downs when needed he can still move around outside of the pocket and be a playmaker when asked to do that maybe it’s not quite at the level that it used to be when he was competing for MVP Trophies there in Seattle but the Steelers aren’t expecting him to be that player they’re expecting him to be the type of player he was in the early years there in Seattle lean on his defense lean on his run game Throw the Deep ball when the defense gives them opportunities to do so and then win games late I still have 100% confidence Russell Wilson can be that type of quarterback for an NFL franchise and if you believe me and if you agree with me here like the video If you believe in Russell Wilson I truly believe in him I think that he’s going to lead this team to double digit wins and a playoff birth if not a playoff Victory so if you believe in the new Steelers signal callar go down there right now and click that thumbs up icon okay now let’s get get into some new free agency targets for the Pittsburgh Steelers here uh there some Rumblings that I’ve been hearing and I want to address them so the first two on the list are actually two former Steelers here at the wide receiver position and it’s Martavis Bryant and James Washington both guys are still available on the free agency market I’ve heard some Rumblings in Steelers Twitter saying we should bring these guys back man weren’t they awesome with the Pittsburgh Steelers I don’t think it’s a good idea guys there’s a reason why they’re still available Martavis Bryant hasn’t played in an NFL regular season game in many years uh James Washington there’s a reason why he has been cast aside by a number of different teams including the Steelers at this point so I would pass on both of those former Steelers and right now when it comes to the wide receiver Market the three guys that I think the Steelers would probably consider the most Michael Thomas is probably going to be the number one guy on my list I’ve detailed why on the channel a number of times but it seems like the Steelers aren’t quite interested in him then Juju Smith Schuster if he gets cut by the New England Patriots I think the Steelers could be potenti interested in him and then Hakeem Butler the ufl’s offensive player of the year still hasn’t signed with a team of course played with the Steelers last year during training camp eventually got cut but he’s still a bigger body that can run a little bit that can win those 50/50 ball situations if you’re looking for maybe more of a project than more of the more known players here at the top maybe Hakeem Butler is probably the best option out there now before I go here we do have one last free agency Target to cover here that we haven’t really talked about on the show before because I didn’t think he was really a possibility for the Steelers at this position of course we’re talking Edge rusher here fourth Edge rusher and Carl Lawson is still available now I’m sure Carl is going to be looking for the best opportunity for him to get the most snaps heading into the year but after yet another injury riddled 2023 season uh it looks like Lawson is going to have to take more of a rotational role heading into next year he’s 29 years old he had seven sacks back in 2022 with the Jets his last fully healthy season he didn’t start a single game last year uh with the New York Jets because of injury he missed an entire season in 2021 because of injuries so this is certainly somebody that has dealt with his injuries but man would he be one of the best uh rotational Edge rushers in football the Steelers could end up Landing him I will say the price needs to be right with the injuries and all that stuff I’m not paying Carl Lawson $7 million a year to be a rotational Edge rusher right CU you still got TJ y you still have Alex Heisman you still have Nick KCK who’s going to get a lot of snaps this year you’re getting a guy here as a fourth Edge rusher and is that something Carl Lawson is really going to want to do I guess we’ll have to see but I know I would be on board with it if the price is right the Three Edge rushers on the market right now that I would consider if I were Steelers GM Omar Khan or Carl Lawson tus Bowser who I actually talked about last week at an at in an at home video I did at my lake house and then uh and then Marcus golden who had a really good season last year uh with the Pittsburgh Steelers still available uh and I think he’d be an excellent fourth uh Edge rusher option now let me know down there in the comments section which one would you rather bring in would you like to bring in Carl Lawson type CL tus Bowser type TB or would you like to bring back Marcus golden if you want him type
