The San Jose Sharks Change The Franchise With The Selections Of Macklin Celebrini And Sam Dickinson
the San Jose Sharks start a new era of hockey by Drafting mlin celebrini and Sam Dickinson in the first round of the 2024 NHL draft you’re locked on sharks your daily podcast on the San Jose Sharks part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day hello welcome to a locked on sharks the premier hockey podcast covering your favorite team in the Bay Area my name is JD young caretaker at The Reef also the co-host of Western Conference Tuesdays on the uh uh NHL lockon NHL Network want to thank you for making locked on sharks your first listen probably part of the locked on network we cover your team every day and if you want to be an everyday all you have to do just follow wherever you get Podcast or you can watch on YouTube as well well and today kids we start a new era of San Jose Sharks hockey as the Sharks draft mlin celebrini and defenseman uh Sam Dickinson and of course we have to start with mlin celebrini um who no surprise the presumed number one pick uh celebrini gets picked um and today starts a a new era of San Jose Sharks hockey um celebrini is is a special special player and what he brings to the ice and what he’s going to bring to this organization this June 28 2024 is going to be one of those days for sharks fans where like everything everything changed then this this is a a new era of San Jose Sharks hockey and if you’re just kind of catching up don’t know who celebrini is that much whatever let just a quick reminder M CBR won the Hobie Baker award uh which is given out to the best player in college hockey um he did this as the youngest player in college hockey he just he didn’t turn 18 until a couple weeks ago on June 13th uh he’s 6 foot 190 pounds uh and his the the comp that you get the most is cydney Crosby mixed with Jonathan taas um celebrini is a player who he is going to change the way people think about the Sharks the way the Sharks operate um he’s a potential Skyline changing player if you know what that means he’s a player who’s going to change the skyline of the city of San Jose um he is going to be that important to to the Sharks and what they’re building from here and don’t expect this all to happen in once right but celebrini who I would be willing to bet a lot of money that celebrini is going to wear a c for the sharks at some point here um the way he handles himself the expectations he puts on himself and I assume when he becomes more comfortable and isn’t 18-year-old kid the expectations he’ll put on his teammates and hold them accountable for this is the change that the Sharks need like we’ve added a bunch of great pieces right you you know kind of starting with that 2020 draft but then like getting William ekin like that first kind of Blue Chip player uh and William echin you know and then you know you got some really nice pieces in like basted and you know TS havid and last year’s draft right Will Smith and Quinton musty and you’re hoping you know Casper hton in and uh Luca kenon and like looking all these pieces building but but celebrini he’s going to be the Tipping Point player where you’re going to look back and see this is this is the guy that changed everything and all these other players I talked about they’re they’re going to be good players right the celebrini is the franchise changing player this these sharks are a going to be looked at as a different franchise uh much like when Joe thoron arrived right I know the Shar said Patrick Marlo and enen Nolan and but the franchise changed the moment Joe thoron walked in the in the room and that’s what’s going to happen with maon celebrating except for now you have him potentially hopefully for the next 20 years right um like 18yearold kid who’s who let’s let’s not mess around he’s going to sign his contract um he will be on the Sharks next year right um you’re getting a a player who’s like that that’s what he’s going to mean to San Jose and I know it feels like lofty expectations but he’s just that he’s a special special player and having Joe thoron come out to announce his pick a first overall draft pick right and you know the the greatest player in sharks history um this it’s it felt like a passing of the torch right we been waiting for that player right from that moving on from the thoron Marlo era to this next era and this was that night the passing of the torch from Joe thoron um to mlin celebrini and basically saying like it’s all yours kid and um we we heard from Mike career and Mike career talked about how Joe Thorton you know is still around and he’s a huge part of the franchise but I think for cbbr he’s going to have all the support right Jo Thorton who was a number one overall pick and basically run out of Boston right um because of he wasn’t able to kind of live up to expectations that’s a that’s the perfect person to have in your corner right a guy who’s been through the ups and the Downs uh like Joe Thorton um and of course loves the game The Way Joe Thorton loves the game you know and Patrick Marlo who’s a second overall pick right has been through all the ups and the downs um blamed for many many sharks failures in the playoffs having him around even just the guys who are around like this this organization yes it’s been a trying couple seasons of what they’re going what they’ve been going through but I really think they’re setting celebrini up for the best possible success just because of the people that are in the organization now with Greer and wowski and Thorton and reach and Patrick Marlo and you know just go down the list of all the people and don’t expect like the the on Ice performance from the Sharks is not gonna you know it’s going to be better this year the expectations is going to be better but and as this isn’t a playoff team now but this team is just going to be it’s gonna be more fun it’s GNA be more professional um and you’re going to start to to see the light at the end of the tunnel um from from this team and see what this this thing is building towards so um yeah just the experience at the sphere with when celebrini um shout out all these sharks I’ve seen so many sharks for jerseys here in Vegas a ton of sharks fans at the sphere um just an absolute like yeah you guys you guys showed out tonight and anytime he was celebrating was on the screen any time like just the crowd went crazy I was not the person screaming on the broadcast I’m somewhat of a professional sometimes uh I was kind of in the media area um and then Bas I was out there I saw celebr get picked and I basically ran to the media area to start because I had a bunch of stuff I have to do right um so but yes the Sharks fans franchise is in better hands now than it was yesterday and this this still a lot of work to be done and right easy part of the rebuild is is tearing it down um now now the real work begins to add the right pieces and the right players and know when to kind of start to kind of push this thing forward um but but you just made your life so much easier with a guy like MBR who is a again a special special player um and the fact that he cut his Vegas trip short home his Vegas trip short early he supposed to leave on Sunday decides him and his family are going back on Saturday so he can get a skate in on Sunday and start getting ready for uh training uh for development camp that starts this week um of course we’ll have uh and with the uh the the prospect game on Fourth of July uh which I will be at the prospect game so just yeah a Fran franchise changing player he is going to be he’s going to be this for the Sharks and you pair him with Will Smith uh down the middle you have eckan you have Zin you have Quinton musty um you’ve got a bunch of great pieces in the forward group and it’s hold your heads up high sharks fans we we suffered a very very long season um this year but this this this moment makes it worth everything we went through uh because the franchises is different now the franchise is just in a different place now than it was 24 hour ago so um we’ll continue we’re going to kind of do you know talk about uh Dickinson Sam Dickinson why he was the choice at 11 um kind of of course we’ll talk about boam versus Dickinson um and then we’ll look at guys who are available at 33 um for when the Draft starts at way too early in the morning at 8:30 uh tomorrow so we’ll get to that here in just one second passion drive and patience the formula for winning championships is also what keep your ride or die alive eBay Motors is everything you need to maintain your vehicle and leveled up eBay guarantee fit only available to us customers all right so of course these sharks after trading up um they get their defenseman uh of of the future uh and that is in Sam Dickinson who I honestly did not see a a realistic path of Dickinson being there but the way the board broke for forwards went much earlier than I think right and you have to kind of look at Becca senica who uh was kind of my my like personal pick for for the sharks at number 11 um went number three and even he was very surprised if you watch the broadcast um mouthing uh something that was uh Very Yes um and then you know I think T ginla went a little bit higher than we expected um the Sharks end up picking you know having to choose between Dickinson and zeve buam and I guess we’ll start with the Z buam part of it before we get into Dickinson but I’m very much in the you know risk it off for z buam i i you know I would have loved to have drafted Steve buam here but Sam Dickinson’s like ridiculously good and you know depending on the rankings like a lot of people had Dickinson over buam some people had William over Dickinson and I think it just came down to Personal Taste and listening to Mike Greer and kind of the way he talked about Dickinson um at the end of the night you know I think for him he he feels like there’s a offensive level with Dickinson that hasn’t been reached yet um which makes sense when you have Oliver Bon who kind of ate a bunch of th those minutes and Dickinson was you know huge part of of London’s success in their run the M moyal cup run um but he he’s a big dude six foot three I mean I stood next to him he’s a big dude 6 fo3 194 um this year and and uh had a monster monster season um with London uh where he scored a bajillion points uh not a bajillion but no he in regular season he had 70 points including 18 goals in 68 games um and then he added another 13 points in 18 playoff games for uh the London Knights uh with four goals during that time he can he great on the transition great skater uh evasive he he needs to work on his as most 17 18 year old kids too um on being more just kind of um sorry I’m really tired he needs to be more consistent and that that’s an issue especially with defenseman right as being that kind of consistent night in night out but this is a great pick left hand I know everyone’s going to say right hand and shot whatever star are just building all their offensive left uh defenseman on the left side that’s just it right you have Shakir mukan on the left you have Sam Dickinson on the left um that’s fine like whatever but um high-end skater from Elite prospects highend skater with massive potentials a rush stopper play starter and uh shooter the big thing just can he put all the pieces together super high floor like he is going to like worst case he’s a second pairing defenseman um who probably leaves you wanting a little bit more but if he puts everything together um and he’s gonna be back in London next year where he’s going to the expectation right is Bon is probably going to be you know graduate either to the AHL or the NHL but Bon is going to probably be gone Dickens is going to be the guy the defensive guy for London and London’s going to be probably pretty good again because London is always really good so um but yeah Dickinson for especially for his size the way he moves his ability to create and transition um he’s been and you saw and if you watch any of the playoffs right you saw just how big of a an asset he was to London um and what they’re doing and building here and I I know people are going to be like well Z William you know Z I think there is a little bit higher ceiling with with him um because of I think his offensive game and kind of Willam has a just kind of like no matter what he wins wherever he goes but dickson’s a great pick and I think he’s like again you picked back on celebrini you have Sam Dickinson you have like you have a top pair ther like you have one of the best potentially one of the best centers in the NHL and then you just got a top pair defenseman like yeah I’m and Dickinson was super excited to be selected by the sharks like you could just tell just the excitement and joy of of like kind of talking to him um he’s yeah he’s a monster especially in the neutral zone um like this this is a really good pick like I know there’s going to be disappointment about boam but Dickinson’s a really good pick and the reason I didn’t really talk about Dickinson that much this year is because I I thought he was like I just did not see a path for him to be available even after the Sharks traded up I thought he was like 6 S8 type of player right like he’s gonna go to one of those teams and I think with ainla going at uh to Utah and then yakam chuk getting I think by the sends that’s when things like we’re like oh like Dickinson’s really in play here um kind of watching it and stuff so um yeah I’m I’m super excited about this draft this is again you got m c brini you got Sam Dickinson who a lot of people think has a potential to be be the best uh defenseman his class um talking to our good friend Stephen Ellis at the draft he was like I love this pick this is a perfect fit for the Sharks and what they’re building uh especially when you have a little bit smaller forwards as the Sharks do and you know like Eckland and Will Smith and even you know uh celebrini who’s six foot but he plays like he’s 6 foot three um and like CBR is short but he’s not he doesn’t play like that so um Dickinson’s gonna be one of yeah he’s he’s gonna be a great fit and a great protector for the Sharks and um his defensive game is is going to be good enough where I think he’s like I said he worst worse worst cases he’s second paing type of player um but if he hits he’s going to be a a great great pick by the Sharks and we’ll probably spend a bunch of time um between now and forever comparing boam and Dickinson um because you know that’s what we do as fans but um yeah I’m my career A+ to start this draft like you got Ma on celebrini and you you were smart enough like you smart to read kind of this situation moved up ahead of some of the teams and kind of you know I know a lot of Flyers fans aren’t really happy with uh with Danny Brier I think we we’re trying to move up but you kind of read read the where kind of where things were going you put yourself in a great position um which is all you can ask for and you got you yeah you crushed this you crushed the first round of this draft um just like he did last year right with Will Smith and Quint musty you te freaking did it again um and yeah it’s it’s a good day good day to be a sharks fan so we’ll look now um at some players who are available at 33 kind of some of the guys I would potentially Circle or at least I I hope my career goes uh so we’ll get to that here in just one [Music] second I love sports I love them so much I never want them to stop but now the playoffs are are done we have fewer games and the sports aren’t sportsing like I want them to but FanDuel lets me keep the sports going whenever I want all I have to do is open up the app and dream up bets anytime I’m in the mood this summer FanDuel is hooking up all customers with a boost or a bonus daily that’s right there’s something for everyone every day all summer long so head over to fanduel.com lockon and start making the most out of your summer FanDuel official sports betting partner of Major League baseball all right um who’s next who’s who’s because again you gotta keep fo going forward um this thing doesn’t stop so I did ask Greer he said they’re going to kind of weigh all their options at 33 um I there’s there’s a world where I can see them moving back you know they’re going to kind of we all their options they’ve got some guys that they like at 33 and they’re going to kind of see if they get any offers which is smart right um so let’s look at some players that I really like and then maybe put look at some guys who could like if Greer wants to maybe move back a little bit especially if he has a lot of guys kind of in the same bucket maybe it would be smart to move back um here so some of the guys uh and Stephen Ellis did a really good job with this um kind of some of the guys that his top players ranked so I’m just gonna kind of cherry pick some of my my favorite guys here um so one Teddy sea um he’s basically Gavin Brinley 2.0 I talked about him on yesterday’s episode um one of those players that you can kind of fit into whatever you need him to do Teddy sta can do um playing on the usn uh TDP program he’s like probably middle six type of guy maybe not not the biggest upside but he just kind of makes everybody around better um and he’s yeah stego would be a really nice fit there I still think though um I think they’re going to go defenseman uh would be my guess so here’s some defenseman I I like in this area so Charlie uh elck a right-handed defenseman out of uh Brandon we kings in the WL um sorry I didn’t like pull up any uh I didn’t I didn’t get a chance to make any um things for them U but so elix 6’3 198 pounds um very much a kind of shutdown defense player uh right-handed shot so uh if he’s kind of like yakam Chuck uh or like kind of the almost like the if you took yakam Chuck’s offense and made him defense um that’s kind of Eli where he’s um he’s going to murder he’s like a a runaround murder people type of guy um very physical um hard hitter but great in the neutral zone great at shutting down players um really good size like I said um I I think he is he’s potential he’s a fit there especially if you wanted to go Dickinson Eli that’s not bad that is a really nice like really nice pairing there um for the shark so um from Elite prospects so uh Eli punishes any hesitation with a thunder hit players who enter space get met with a smattering of shoves and cross checks he eliminates off- Puck threats and never stops battling but somehow rarely ends up chasing or is on the wrong side of the puck physical proactive defense is Alex games he’s an explosive backward and lateral skater which he uses to to instantly take the middle and then transport across ice and prevent the entry his stick is seemingly in every lane uh tipping every pass or shot inside his wings man uh and his Mobility allows him to stay tight to the puck uh threat so he had 27 points to 65 games you know again not not the biggest kind of Point producer but uh I think Eli and and if you’re looking at as a potential Eli and Dickenson pairing like dickenson’s not like he’s big but he could be a little bit more physical Eli like that is a perfect combination right there and I would yeah Eli is the guy I think uh to to potentially Circle for the for the sharks so um some other guys here um so we have our good friend alfons fry who we’ve talked about extensively I still think he’s gonna be around for a little bit especially with some of the other names here um Dominic badinka um in the shl um is somebody I would be very interested in as well um so he’s a a potential fit for the Sharks again 6’3 right-handed shot um last year playing uh in the shl he played 33 games had four points in that again he’s a 17 18 year old kid playing shl minutes and he’s playing like 15 minutes A Night in the shl which is very impressive for a kid his age it’s kind of earn that trust so not again not the great I don’t think the offensives like the shooting maybe isn’t really there but good on the transition good like versatility another kind of physical player um and like he’s he’s a potential guy who in that same area um he’s good at uh again sorry he’s very good at uh kind of shutting things down um in the neutral zone I think though he does like he the offensive game he’ll need to kind of figure things out there um he doesn’t do a lot of we like the controlled exit percentage when he does it um he does it really high um just like kind of getting the puck going the other way um but yeah physical player and I think he would be a really nice kind of fit there too so you would have like a again a really nice compliment to Sam Dickinson um as well so another couple guys just to kind of potentially keep an eye on here you do have Cole Hudson of course um who left-handed defenseman who does have insane insane offensive skills uh but just like his brother there’s going to be some question marks with the defense um Henry Muse who i’ I’ve talked a lot about um as well is a player who I really do like in the uh in the OHL um just as a quick kind of reminder on him so he has 6 foot 185 pounds right-handed shot so a little bit smaller than kind of some of these other guys has 61 points in 65 games for the Ottawa 67s uh smooth player really really good foot speed um Poise uh needs to play with a little bit more Pace um but I think getting him in the the second round and again especially when you have Sam Dickinson um I think he’s a potential guy to to to look at right there as as some guys here in the the second round so um yeah A+ draft from to start this thing so uh again when you walk away with celebrini like celebrini and Sam Dickinson who none of us none of us thought he was going to be available at 11 that’s a great great start to the draft uh so we’ll be back on Saturday to wrap up the second round of the draft uh we’ll have a little bit more kind of you know get to know some of these guys and kind of some scouting reports and all that fun stuff so we’ll pull all that stuff up um hopefully I’ll get some sleep at some point here so uh so make sure you follow on wherever you get Podcast of course you can watch on YouTube as well follow the show on Twitter Facebook and Instagram at lockon sharks follow me on Twitter at my fry hole until tomorrow bye friends [Music]

Weo lets go
Think the Flyers could’ve fleeced the Wild for more picks, 2025 3rd rounder which I said Flyers could’ve gotten an extra 2nd rd pick for a top 5-6 defenseman in draft. I think it was a hard choice but u have to understand the fit. Dickinson was a top 5-6 defenseman, too if u checked all mock drafts. The domino effect was when Ducks drafted Beckett at #3.
I really like Hutson.. he’s not a big guy but he could be a Quinn Hughes lite.
What gets me hyped about these guys is they both seem like guys who will wear letters on their sweaters. Which is huge for the culture of the locker room and turning this ship around!!
To quote that one Sharks fan at the draft: "YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"
The Sharks history of drafting ineptitude, particularly in the first round (I’ve been watching this team since the 1991 draft) continues. That’s why they’re one of 10 franchises without a Cup. At least they didn’t, because they couldn’t, screw up the Celebrini pick. But they really messed up by passing the game changing Buium. The Wild couldn’t believe their luck.
Beyond happy with the draft. I almost spit out my food on my break when I checked in and saw we got Dickinson at 11. Excited for the future of this team.
I hope they find a way to get Joe Pavelski on a 1 year deal look at Wyatt Johnson how fast he was able to ajuste.. So am I crazy to want to see Celebrini Smith Musty Halttunen Mukhamadullin & Dickinson all in the nhl next year take their lumps but grow together .. that’s 6 so you surround them with 14 solid character guys that you might have something there
I am just relieved that we got Dickinson instead of Yakemchuk or Jiricek.
What an epic Draft Day!! 🎉🎊🍾🍾🍾 not mad at all and excited to have finally witnessed the Sharks 1st Franchise round 1 pick 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 now we’re getting back on track n here for what these young stars are gonna become 🫡🙏🏼👌🏼🔥🔥🔥🦈🏒
Next year hopefully there’s a top goalie we can draft in the 1st round
Ryder Ritchie #33 🙏
Hey JD is Dickinson NHL ready?
I had heard that Dickinson was expected to play in London for another year, does anyone know if that is confirmed (or highly likely)? Beyond thrilled with the draft thus far, my only disappointment was that Dean Letourneau got drafted at 25 because I had really hoped to see him on board at 33.
They better make sure he gets his 17 number from Bords
I understand why they picked Dickinson over Buium, but I'm still bummed about it.
r u saying you HAVE NO video of these guys? GEEZUZ goodbye
We know he gonna dominate with sharks in few years you watch!
