Ryane Clowe named Sharks Assistant GM

Chloe it’s great to catch up with you obviously congratulations on rejoining the Sharks front office you know how many interviews did we do where you were on the bench or inside the dressing room now look at me talking to you you’ve got you’ve got a whole office there photos and everything yeah I’ve come a long way you know it’s it’s been full circle for me to get back out to San Jose and you know not on like I said not on the bench in the room anymore but more upstairs in the office but just exciting how was this process was it more of a recruitment by the shark you were with the Rangers were you looking for other opportunities how how did this all come together no I wasn’t looking for other opportunities at all uh you know I love I love working with New York it’s been three years uh you know I love working with Chris rury uh and his staff you know was great learning experience and every year I was able to do a little bit more so I looking leave it all uh but when Mike called and once I talked to him and went through that process you know it was um it was too good of an opportunity turn down especially knowing Mike and my relationship with him and his vision and um you know obviously being San Jose and and my relationship the Sharks and you know playing out there and living out there and the people around that I’m still close with uh you know this this opportunity was uh too good to turn down yeah has has to feel comfortable to a certain degree just based on your your your past and history and track record and and you know Tom hly and you know Joe will who were the other assistant general managers and obviously you played with Mike Greer um in terms of what exactly you’ll do I know you’ve been saying boots on the ground like you’ll actually have maybe a real Hands-On grasp of this team how do you envision things going I know you’ve never been an assistant general manager before how do you envision your role this year I I envisioned the transition to go smoothly and like I said there’s a lot of things I did in New York wasn’t so much day-to-day but a lot of things that I I assume will be similar uh but I think the biggest difference will you know be the the day-to- day with the with the bar Cuda around as well and helping Joe in that area um you know and and then from the development standpoint helping out when they’re in town uh you know just overall helping mic with the team and where the players are at where the team’s at any transaction that you need uh any transactions that you know might be we might be approach it so it’s just you know it’s it’s kind of hard to nail down exactly what what the day-to-day you know job will be but I think it revolves around you know most around uh the team the Sharks the players development you know scouting both amateur and pro and kind of a little bit everything basically I guess is the best way to put it well you’re looking great you’re staying in hockey I know you’ve been in different roles since you retired as a player but going back to when you were a player and I think it was 2012 that year of the walkout I went to the Cow Palace one night I caught up with you you were behind the bench of the San Francisco Bulls I mean even back then I think it was clear to you that you’re kind of preparing for a life in hockey after being a player and so to anybody who might be surprised or says Hey Chloe’s back it’s probably not surprising to you that that something like this is where you ultimately end up no and you know back then I didn’t I didn’t know even though I I was skating with the San Francisco Bulls and I ended up being an assist assistant coach right I knew at that stage I didn’t know in what capacity but I knew when I was finished I I would want to stay in the game I mean it’s it’s just something that I knew was in me uh you know I love playing but I also I could talk hockey you know all day so uh Doug Murray always used to give me grief about that that I could you know talk talk hockey all day with anyone and so I I think I I didn’t know which in in which capacity but I knew I wanted to stay and then obviously once I was done in New Jersey I basically jumped right back in you know I had a year that rati allowed me to be around and I was basically around a team around a staff around a coaching staff and then John Hines asked me at the end of the year to be on his staff as an assistant which I did for two years and then basically you know after that started to uh once I kind of shifted away from coaching started to do some stuff right away with the Rangers uh and you know I was three years ago so again work work with Mike with the Rangers as well um and then when he got the position here obviously you know he reached out this year but uh this is you know as I kind of go through and certainly from a a family perspective I think this is a really good fit you know to be be around a little bit more and it’s a little more more stability I think in the front office role so you know I’m really happy I really like evaluating players and evaluating talent and trying to you know build a team so it’s it’s exciting you mentioned Douglas Murray he was back for a little bit I haven’t seen him in a long time I think he’s stuck in Sweden I don’t know if he’s he’s allowed back in North America uh but I I do want to talk about the other former teammates of yours and Joe’s out there and Patty’s out there and uh Mike RI has has been a a Sharks coach for a long time you’ve getting to bakov same thing it’s an impressive group that stayed I I know as a colleague Scott Hannon Mark Smith a lot of former players are staying here and and making the sharks like the the next thing that they do what what’s enticing or what’s just appealing about like coming back to the Sharks for either you or for either all those guys well I think it’s just first of all you know the organization and then you know I think San Jose is a great place to live I you know not kid ourselves I think the guys really enjoyed living there it was it was great place to live and uh and then the organization you know you see the fans and you see the excitement when the team does well and then I think that’s why it’s important to have that connection you know from from the past I guess and when the team was you know having those good runs and and was always on top of the league you see the excitement around the town and around the city so I think that’s probably one of the biggest reasons but also you know these guys that are back there like Navi and reach and Patty and jumbo and you know goes on Hanah like I said and and re uh those guys are not just back there you know would doing nothing like they they care about the organization and they’re not just coming around you know they come around they work they’re digging in they’re trying to do whatever they can to help and that’s exciting to see and that’s no different than you know with me coming back is I want to try to dig in do whatever I can bring the help bring the organization back to where uh we know it should be and and Mike’s done a great job up to this and his staff with Tom and Joe up to this this point so I’m just looking to come in and kind of uh you know do my part well you’ve come in at a very good time obviously the rebuilding has already started it might be turning a corner to where fans can maybe see more of the the fun work right I feel like it’s been a lot of foundational work by Mike reer and his staff up to this point but going back now five years and no playoffs I mean when you were a shark you could never even imagine a streak going that long so I’m not I’m not going to ask you like oh what do you predict or how how do you do this but for you like what’s a good first Benchmark back to rebuilding this thing like what’s the first point where you say okay we’re already on a good track but now we’re really making progress is there is there anything you can tangibly grasp well at this stage it’s hard because when you get insert young players into the lineup yeah and young players in you know key positions you’re talking about Canta R and you’re talking about you know potentially top six top nine roles you know that’s you know that’s a really challenging position for young guys and it’s it’s a tough league and they got to kind of go through it so it’s hard to say exactly I would say as you know as an organization you just want to keep getting a little younger and a little better every year and I feel like this is you know this is a year where I think you can kind of make a step towards that uh and then you you just want to try to be more competitive team and it doesn’t mean doesn’t necessarily mean you know more wins or more uh game to game wins and losses but just you know the fans are the fans are smart the fans are smart out there they know what it is uh they seen seen last year you know was a tough year and I think there’s still a little bit of pain to come because it’s you’re inserting young kids into the lineup but you know if you can see a more competitive team night on a nightly basis uh you know just just a tougher out tougher tougher competition for the opponent and a team that plays a little bit more detailed and structured I think that’s a that’s a in the right progress but off the ice at this stage when a team is in this in this stage I think it’s is probably more important to make sure the foundation is there how you do things how you go about your business and how you’re you know where you’re going and what you know what you kind of accept and what you don’t accept so I think that’s where we’re trying to build and like I said done a great job the last couple years it hasn’t been easy yeah you know I’ve been watching from the outside and I kind of get to slide in this year you know when they when they get some of these high pick so uh there’s still a lot of work but they’ve done a great job up to this point you showed up to the party when the cake came out right that’s that’s the good time um and I I’m GNA try and always remember like this season and Beyond to not make it all about Will Smith and mlin celebrini although I got to meet Macklin for the first time at the draft I mean what a mature young dude 18 years old and you can already tell there’s a lot there but from your experience as a player and now somebody who’s in you know in an executive role in the front office for players like that what’s the best way as a franchise to help Foster their growth how do you how do you make sure you’re doing the right things for them so that they do take the strides that everybody can expect well I don’t think there’s anywhere more clo you know work more closely with the players than those young players than their teammates you know there’s no one around them more there’s no one they spend more time with so I think you’ve seen some of the additions this year with Barkley goodro and wiberg Tyler T Foley you know those are those are really good guys uh Ty dandry brought Ty in so I think you know you bring guys like that in surround that’s critical I mean it’s critical for the development it’s critical for the team development and so you know for for me it’s it’s such an individual thing you know i’ seen some guys come in you know when I had ni oeser in New Jersey came right away and he was almost a well-rounded player you know he can play he could play the whole ice he can play the whole rink and he was trusted in in all r and some of the other younger guys and high picks and first overall picks I’ve seen that have really struggled and and a lot of times it depends on what team you come into and who’s around you and you know if you’re coming in relied on heavily it can be a more challenging if you can kind of slide in there and just you know kind of go about your business and not have a whole lot of pressure on you I think it makes it a little bit easier but to me it’s it’s the teammates the players around you and I think Mike Andy staff have done a great job this year you know identifying and evaluating these guys and bringing them in I got two more things for you um can the youngest players of this team uh when they’re just you know like learning the ropes and and getting that first go around in the NHL can they already be leaders of the team or does it just does it have to work where it takes a couple years until maybe the older players say all right that kid actually kind of deserves this now how how does leadership grow and can the youngest sharks actually be leaders like this year or soon yeah I mean I don’t I don’t know their personalities well enough yet to know from a leadership if they’re going to be I don’t think at that age you you know you’re going to come in and be too vocal but what the leadership and when you’re younger like I think is is gaining the respect of your teammates and knowing that you you know they see you do the right thing they trust you they know your commitment even though you’re 18 they’re they’re going to be fine with you having off nights tough days you know it’s it’s a challenge they get that but if you’re committed to doing things right and you know your attitude is really in line then you’re going to have you know you’re going to have great support from your from your teammates your coaches uh you’re going to have a lot of leeway you know I think that’s that’s kind of where I think leadership at a young age is is a commitment to kind of commitment to attitude you know whether you’re you know it’s off ice in a gym or how hard you practice that’s what you’re looking for from young kids and the game stuff is going to be like I I’ve I’ve repeated multiple times it’s going to be challenging especially when you play these teams and some of his defense that you go up against you know they’re going to have hard matchups you look at Macklin he’s going to get probably the top matchups next year so it’s going to be a challenge but I think that the leadership they dayto day off the ice and in the room is what really you know gets you gets the support from your teammates my last question is kind of a a selfish personal one but I remember the good days of sharks yesterday Year yourself on those teams and it’s weird because you want to create that atmosphere again you want to create that difficult team uh for the Sharks to to be a difficult opponent to play against but you’re also not here to recreate like identically how that team was right in a jumbo and a Patty and a boiler and a like yourself Logan you can’t really create like The Identical thing so you just want it to have the same result right but we’re not here to replicate what the team was 10 15 years ago no and I think there’s certain I guess standards or certain style of play from those teams uh that you probably you know you know that had success you know whether it be you know possession and be able to you know be heavier bigger stronger you know control of the puck in the offensive zone grind teams down you know that’s sometimes that’s you may have it as your mindset of what you want but that’s not all you know you don’t have to be my size or jumbo size or or you know Patty size you know you look at cooch or pavs or those guys those guys are really hard when we play with them really hard to play against really effective players could win a lot of 5050 pucks did a lot of a lot of damage Around the Net you know they were tough players to play against so it comes in different forms but what you really want as a team is and a lot of this will come into the coaching staff and and us as well working together is what’s the identity we want as a team and would you establish what kind of players you want and I think you’ve seen that this year a little bit with Mike and and some of the guys far as Ty dandry and carlstrom and you know goody and the guys you bring in like you know that are trying to you’re trying to start to push it that way and and you know try to establish some sort of an identity and uh that’s that’s where you you got to go uh but a lot of times the players you know the guys you get on your team they drive it what kind of players they are kind of Drive what your what your identity and team is going to be so you know those days those days are over we got don’t say that we got to let these new kids take over now well it’s good to have some of the familiar faces around and I say this I hope you understand what I mean like this is surreal to be talking to you again in this role but I’m I’m like so excited that it’s real I’m excited that you’re going to be out here in California and San Jose uh most of the season so I’m really looking forward to it I’m glad you’re back and the biggest thing is congratulations so we got to get a big number 29 on the back of all the suits you’re going to wear you know and an a you’re good you don’t have to worry about coming on the ice for fighting instructions anymore you’re safe you know I tweeted that first saying it’s it’s a fact that the shark’s assistant general manager has actually fought one of the media members now so we’ll we’ll read there’s no saying that won’t happen again so let’s not ever have that happen again Chloe appreciate this man thanks it’ll be great to see you around you too

San Jose Sharks (@SanJoseSharks) General Manager Mike Grier announced today that the team has hired Ryane Clowe as assistant general manager.

Clowe will work closely with Grier and existing assistant general managers Tom Holy and Joe Will overseeing all aspects of the Sharks hockey operations department.

Clowe spent the last three seasons with the New York Rangers as senior advisor and hockey operations advisor to General Manager Chris Drury. In that role, Clowe assisted Drury in all areas of hockey operations, including scouting. The Rangers successfully made the post season the past two seasons, including reaching the Eastern Conference Final last year, before being eliminated by the eventual Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers.

Previously, Clowe spent a portion of the 2018-19 season as head coach for the Newfoundland Growlers but stepped down from the role due to health concerns. Between 2016-2018, he served as an assistant coach with the New Jersey Devils, working under John Hynes. He served as the ‘eye in the sky’ for the staff during games and worked on the team’s pre-scouts.

Clowe played in ten NHL seasons between 2005-2015, primarily with the Sharks. Drafted by San Jose in the sixth round (175th overall) of the 2001 NHL Draft, Clowe played in 423 games with the Sharks, posting 271 points (101 goals, 170 assists) and 567 penalty minutes. His 271 points place him 14th on the Sharks all-time scoring list and he ranks fifth all time in penalty minutes.

  2. Once I was driving right by the shark tank after a game and I was at a stop sign and I looked in the rear view and Ryan Clowe was in his car behind me. I just thought that was cool but I did not drive or act any different.

One time I saw the whole Vancouver Cannucks team leaving on a bus when I was close to the same spot I saw Clowe. I had never seen a whole pro hockey team before like that. The bus did not say it was them on the outside but it knew it was them.

Obviously pro athletes need to come and go from work but just seeing it for the first time is still cool.

Once I saw Patrick Marleau and his wife in a Costco and what was crazy is the majority of people did not recognize him. This was during his prime and shocked me the most. I hear people say how hard it is for Leafs players to go out like that without tons of fans coming up to them.

I said his name just to see what his reaction would be and he was really nice and said how is it going. His wife was not happy I outed him though but lucky there was almost no other shoppers around and nobody else heard me. I did not ask him for an autograph or photo or ask him any questions. I wanted to be respectful to his wife.

My final story was I talked to Randy Hahns son once and all I did was tell him his dad is a sharks legend.

Ryan Clowe was a good sharks player I wish him well.

  3. If you asked me who’s my all time favorite Sharks player? Sure, the franchise had many prolific players that made a lot of goals and assists, but besides that, Ryane Clowe will always be my all time favorite shark. It’s the memories, grit, and determination that mattered to me 🦈

  4. One of my favorites back in high school, guy is a class act who just happened to run around the ice like a wild boar. Ryane playing the puck from the bench is one of my favorite moments in NHL history. Welcome back Clowie
