The Milwaukee Brewers Head to the Break Better Than Most of Us Thought
this last home stand to close out the first half of the season for the Milwaukee Brewers the proverbial first half really tested our nerves and some of us even second guessing the Milwaukee Brewers but here they are in first place four and a half game lead in the division are they going to stay in first place can they fend off everybody else we’ll get to that coming up next here on lockdown you are locked on Brewers your daily Milwaukee Brewers podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day everybody thanks again for joining me uh welcome to a new week here on lockon Brewers part of lockon podcast Network we are your team every day off the top I want to apologize late last week had an episode of having too many energy drinks and I got back here uh after one of the games last week late last week Thursday I think it was and um really Thursday morning and I had the script all written all that and I just wow it just gave me a little lesson not to have too many of those found that out from uh the doctor over here and and I’m back the good and all that just let it all that stuff just drain out of my system but I’m good ready to go talking Brewer baseball with you thank you for all the messages everybody out there but here we are first place the Milwaukee Brewers first place the Milwaukee Brewers head heading into the allstar break and the Brewers are given very little chance to be here at this point very little chance four and a half game lead on St Louis six and a half on Pittsburgh eight on Cincinnati eight and a half on the Cubs and as I’ve I told you don’t worry about Pittsburgh don’t worry about Cincinnati don’t worry about the Cubs I think St Louis is the only team I’m really concerned about and you know they swept the double header from the Cubs on Saturday came back and lost on Sunday the Cubs are charging in this division but I I’m still not too worried about them what I need I like to see the Brewers do is hold on to double digits above the 500 Mark and of course expand on that um to not only get the playoffs but firm up the NL Central Division I get asked all the time are the Brewers what do you think of the Brewers are the Brewers going to win this Division I still think the Brewers are the best team in this division yeah this past week uh Saturday’s game against Washington blowing the 5 nothing lead Friday night’s game kind of a dud losing the skines on Thursday in Pittsburgh and and the Pirates taking two or three hey that’s going to happen Brewers Dro two of three to Washington two of3 to Pittsburgh both at home after winning nine straight series at home hey that’s going to happen you saw the Yankees go through a slide recently they had lost like 16 of 21 now the Brewers fortunately they don’t go into prolong slumps I think it’s seven times this year seven times that they have had three- game skid and they had their latest three- game skid fall apart on Sunday when they won when they beat Washington handily nine to3 so only seven times this year they’ve had a three- game skid by that fourth game they usually turn things around so that’s good they have stayed away from prolong losing skids they have patching things together with this pitching staff patching things together offensively there’s some questions about who should play in the Outfield I know some of you are disappointed in Garrett Mitchell who homered on Sunday I’m going to give him a little bit more of an opportunity okay just coming back all the injuries face it the guy’s coming off two major injuries need to cut him some slack but also we’re trying to win a pennet here we’re trying to win a division title um but yeah that whole Outfield thing has got to work itself out and who’s going to be the regular and maybe we just keep on seeing platooning but yeah I think Mitchell will eventually uh I’m not down on him I think he’s eventually going to turn around it was great to see him Homer for the first time in a long time I think since last April last April so that was good to see but going into the All-Star break 13 games over the 500 mark this is better than what I had dreamed of now the Brewers got off to a great start of the Season as you recall way back when when when they went into New York and swept the Mets of the three- game series continued to have success as they went through Cincinnati came home had a nice Series played Minnesota weekend series after I think it was St Louis um but the Brewers played well for the most part what at what grade would I give the Brewers for the first half of the season I would give them a resounding a a resounding a there is no doubt not an A minus not a B+ an a maybe even closer to an A+ considering a new manager uh not a preferred starting rotation okay you had guys like Colin Wright who was who was in going to be in the rotation to start the season I got the win on Sunday nine and three okay you’ve had short starts you had you brought in Dallas kyel he made a few starts didn’t work out we’re going to talk about that a little bit later on he brought some guys up like Rodriguez from Triple A didn’t quite work out you know you tried a few things you you’ve gone to a opener quite a few times this year you had Bryce Wilson in the starting rotation okay when that guy had limited starting well he had not started since he came to Milwaukee he came here as a middle reler they stretched him out a little bit spring training but you look at all the over the things that the Brewers have overcome an injury to reys Hoskins what were you g to get from Willie Adamas at a contract year Well what’ you get from Willie you got 246 and 15 home runs and he has started every game at shortstop every game at shortstop he’s been an Iron Man you don’t see that big reason and I know some of you all Don on Willie I’m not he had a big day on Sunday he went four for four double in a home run so yeah Willie Damas not going to be traded I I hear some of these pundits out there say they should trade ad Damas they’re not going to do it they would not they would not trade it but they are not resigning him either uh reys Hoskins still working through a few things Bowers has come in was hot earlier in the season Bryce terang who should be an All-Star has been spectacular spectacular you look at his War numbers and everything that he has contributed to this team really really good Joey Ortiz went healthy didn’t expect that guy to be a major part at third base Oliver Dunn was a starting third baseman when the Brewers opened up okay Ortiz ended up winning that spot been hurt but we like what Ortiz has done okay battling through that neck and all that I I like Ortiz at third base but I like a little bit more power at third base sure but again with Major League Baseball you can’t always get all the cards that you want um so yeah he’s done well and what about Christian Yelich in left field you know B competing for a batting championship he’s going to be competing for a batting championship puts he batting 321 yeah maybe the power numbers aren’t what we had hoped okay but running the bases like a deer extra bases gappers hitting the ball with some Authority into the Gap running stealing bases playing well out there in defensively in left field Christian Yelich he’s not back to 2018 2019 I know we always like to compare that he’s not there because the power numbers aren’t there but he’s doing it he’s doing just fine this version of Christian yge yes I’m fine with it hit me 321 322 I’ll take that and all the other numbers that go with it maybe the power numbers not when he’s going to jack a home run he’s going to jack you he’s not Jim gner who’s going to jack you two three home runs year he’s you know he’s still he he’ll hit his 20 home runs but yeah I just love I think Christian yellich big reason big reason of this team center field you know you’ve had a few guys filter through there you know freeli Garrett Mitchell uh Perkins and all we’re working through all that left center field and right field I think chero has had some really good moments went through a slide there where some of you thought maybe that cherio should make a trip down to the miners but they’re keeping him at the major league level the bottom completely falls out but he he shows that he belongs here and is a future star he belongs here he is going to be a future star with the Brewers yeah that contract that they signed him to at the beginning of the Season you know spring training or before the spring training whatever it was um you know they bought out his arbitration years that’s going to be a good deal I think I think we’re all sold and that’s going to be a good deal but yeah the all star break much needed for these guys they dropped seven of their last 10 games seven of their last 10 they went two and four on this last home stand when I was sitting here last week on Tuesday talking about hey this is a chance for the Brewers to get fat in this homes stand against Pittsburgh and Washington but that’s the way baseball goes you all know that Oakland came here swept a three- game series uh last year that’s the way it goes in baseball okay and plus and Pat Murphy had even said thought that the team was a little disconnected he said that after either Friday he was said after Friday’s game thought that the the team was a little disconnected they didn’t get to the all-star break and I put on a tweet on Sunday I said man Sunday for this game just ahead into the All-Star break the Brewers need to beg borrow or steal a win they need to find a way to win got some early offense and they continued to tack on wins got a 9-3 win that was a huge win on Sunday they’re all big but that was that was important to you know not go into the break feeling bad about yourself will Adama says we believed we believed in spring training We Believe now this team is I think still going to contend for a a division title I really do can they win a World Series well we’ll talk about that coming up next check Freeman here on lockon Brewers part of lockon podcast Network we are your team every day good to have you along win a World Series it’s always an age-old question we’ll get to that next all right everybody Chuck Freeman here on lockdown Brewers part of lockdown podcast Network we are your team every day yes the Brewers are good enough to win the NL Central it’s not going to be easy to win this division to hold off St Louis at one point this was what a seven half game lead in the division and we were all loving things thinking man the Brewers going to waltz away with this division well Brewers I mean they’re still 13 games over the 500 mark But St Louis got hot St Louis got caught got hot they cooled off a little bit they split this weekend series with the Cubs they each won two games and then they played a midweek series last week and and the Cardinal struggled with a losing a day night double header um but the Cardinals for the most part I mean since Mother’s Day but they have the second or third best record in baseball since then so they’re I think they’re here to stay Brewers are a better team though and that’s just not being a Brewer Fan or looking at it through Brewer colored Brewers glasses um blue and yellow glasses brew and yellow blue and yellow colored glasses it’s just the reality the Brewers are a better team now what they what I’m worried about is is if the bullpen is going to hold up now the Brewers did that the Brewers did let go of the Dallas kikel experiment they brought him in I was not real high in it he’s a guy they were hoping to get four or five innings but you’ve seen you watched in most of his starts that there was trouble there was trouble in every start and again you know we’re not the Pittsburgh Pirates here we’re not a team just playing out the season or even a spoiler team like the Oakland A’s you know there’s a few of those teams around trying to win a division trying to win a World Series and you know they brought kyel in they took a chance didn’t cost them much and that was it okay and now it’s time to move on again will it be Bryce Wilson back in that starting rotation I think the Brewers are going to go out and get themselves another pitcher I was encouraged with Seal’s start the other night uh when he went against SK I was I was I like what seali brought to the table so but I think the Brewers are going to get themselves another pitcher I really do um I like Bryce Wilson in Middle relief he could start whatever and if they don’t Wilson moves into the starting rotation I have a feeling though the Brewers are going to go out and get themselves they need to get themselves they need some help okay although the bll uh the starting pitching I think has been terrific for the most part you know considering what they have out in that rotation they’ve exceeded my expectations but it’s taxing on the bullpen the bullpen is taking a beating Brewers are certainly capable of winning the NL Central they’re the best team in the division I really believe that yeah two team races as I said are they good enough to win a World Series well of course you get the playoffs anything can happen we saw with Arizona the one thing the last couple of years the Brewers have stubbed their toe 2021 against Atlanta 2023 with Arizona so you just don’t know what’s going to happen in the come playoff time you could be completely stacked and still steep in the bucket uh but right now I the Brewers have the making to win the division I don’t see their a World Series they don’t give me that World Series flavor team they they’re a team that’s together they have all the intangibles there are certain guys in this team who’ve exceeded my expectations certain guys that maybe some people have written off like Christian yage who keep who are competing for batting championships I think the Brewers need another pitcher they can’t continue to have these shorts starts these short starts are eventually going to Doom these guys Doom this Bullpen you know that’s why Dallas Kao was released because not giving them enough length and the length he was giving them wasn’t very good you know we were kind of hoping was setting the bar low that Dallas could take us through four or five innings but you saw Saturday fourth inning ran into trouble five straight hits to start that inning that would ran into trouble and Brewers could have helped out by tacking on runs after that first inning but they didn’t do it and that was a problem that was a problem for this team but again Dallas Kyo that starting pitching got to be able to suck up some more Innings it’s got to and it starts with Freddy Colin Ray who’s a master at e eating up Innings I like what savali did against skin the other day Thursday I think they could use one more guy one more guy and that’s just not picking up somebody off the scrap scrap heat you know one of those Brewer moves think they legitimately need to go out and get themselves a guy a guy who’s gonna come in here because if they want to win a playoff series they need some starting pitching they need some starting pitching you have Freddy Colin Ray Bryce Wilson I don’t know where Bryce Wilson’s going to fit in I mean he’s I I’ve liked him wherever he’s fit in he had a g a home run the other night but still Bryce Wilson I think has overachieved my expectations but avoid the long losing skids stay consistent like they are and the Brewers will win this division stay 13 to 15 games over the 500 Mark I don’t think St Louis is going to stay a strong as they are and St Louis has dipped off in a little bit I don’t think they are Pittsburgh I’m not at all concerned Cincinnati the Cubs no I mean the Cubs would have to just or Cincinnati just have to go on a complete Terror and the Brewers would have to fall in the fall in the toilet which I don’t see happening you know but I I I’ll tell you what I felt a lot better when it was a seven and a half game lead but four and a half going into the break against St Louis I’ll take it that’s why Sunday was such a big win for them to come out and win that game Sunday win that game Sunday and move on and uh you know lost seven of 10 heading into the break two and four on this home stand let’s reset and get into Minnesota on Saturday and see how things happen I like the fact that the Brewers are doing this with the younger team I really do think that bod’s well for Success down the road I think the Brewers are set up for success for years to come because of the farm system because of some of the guys on this team young guys who I think are the real deal who we’ve talked about already in other episodes you know the tangs of the world they’re the real deal this Brewer team they might be a notch or two above below winning a World Series Championship but we’ll see what happens but by all means I I just part of in the back of my mind too thinks you know gosh are they going to fall apart in the second part of the season are they going to what they did in 2014 you remember how it just all fell apart in 2014 and then by early May of next year they were switching from Reni to council as manager we’ll see I do like the future of the Brewers and I like their draft picks that they made four of them on Sunday night including one I really really love man I love them we’ll come right back and talk about that next here on locked on Brewers locked on Brewers part of locked on podcast Network we are your team every day Brewers made four draft picks on Sunday night and the guy who I really like is the outfielder brailin Payne out of high school in Texas 17 years old he was expected to be a second round draft pick a second you know he was ranked 54th by Baseball America but Brewers saved some money they drafted him baseball Prospect journals Dan zalinski man I respect a lot for his opinion we had him on the show last week he says brillan paying 62 185 left-handed hitting centerfielder Who projects as the top of an order hitter at the next level uses a short compact swing to make consistent contact he’s got emerging power Scout’s confident he’ll impact the baseball more consistently as he matures physically which 17 years old you know body your body changes from 17 to 24 get them into the major league program the diet the working out the training brillin Payne has got a huge upside guy already makes solid contact go see his videos watch his videos I’m in love with the kid already brayan Payne center field center fielder of the future possibly so that was the 17th pick the 34th pick with the Corbin Burns pick the the one the pick they got in the compensatory pick Blake Burke first baseman 63 236 left-handed making solid contact Dan zalinsky says hits the all Fields as well another guy that Dan he’s very high on then they made uh picks with two pitchers both out of the high school of New Jersey Bryce mcage and Chris leonus mid90s upper 90s they throw there’s tape out there on them too if you want to watch it we’re going to get Dan on a little bit later on the week after the Brewers are done Drafting and we can go through all this but man in particular bra brilin Payne speed on the base passs there’s a video out there from a TV station in Texas that a little feature on him during his season and man and you hear his coach talk about what a team guy this guy is we’ll get to know more about these guys all these guys but brillan Payne 17 years old man love them love I did want Dallas Keuchel removed from the staff. It really wasn't much of an upgrade from Carlos Rodriguez who wasn't very good either.
I never heard of Pat Murphy at the exact time of the hire, but once I checked his resume, and knowing he knows everything Counsel knows and more, I had an inkling this team was world series bound! So, I'm still thinking that. Brewers should do better in "Do or Die" playoff scenerios this year. Pat Murphy was a boxer, lot's of winning experience in winning big games as college manager too. Burnes won't be there to choke out the first game either. And Woodruff isn't officially ruled out of the playoffs as far as I know.
Trevor Megill was given a chance to close in game #2 against Washington. He failed. I'm sure Murphy knew CJ Abrams was the best hitter and a bad righty/lefty matchup for Megill. But, Megill had to be tested. Could Megill get this guy? That was the lingering question. Unfortunately it didn't work out. So, by playoff time there might have to be some juggling with Megill, Abner Uribe, Devin Williams, and even Bryan Hudson.
Outfield of 5… Yelich is getting full time at bats at left field and/or designated hitter. Seems like Murphy is using competition between the remaining four to get the highest level production of those four guys. If Murphy can keep them competing, giving strategical days off to keep their numbers close (competitive) his plan could work. If one of them just starts ripping the ball at a consistent higher level, Murphy rewards that with more at bats. It's a nice little positive reinforcement system Murphy appears to be working with.
We're still two games ahead of my 91 win projection.
chuck is drunk
Yes, we're ahead of expectations, but think how much better we would be if we could just win some more games vs inferior teams. Marlins, Rockies, Pirates and Nats. We had odds of 75.2% to win Game 2. We faced pitchers with a minor league ERA of 6.50 and couldn't score.
I am alarmed at our lack of power. First 18 series in 2024 we outhomered our opps 8 times and lost 6 times. Last 13, we won the HR battle just 3 times.
Hoskins is getting his power back (but lack of clutch hitting still a huge concern). Cantreras has just 2HRs since his epic battle with Verlander, At lease we won't need to rely on Monastario, Perkins, Miller etc to supply power hopefully.
A new starting pitcher pickup aside, is the ideal current rotation after break: Peralta, Civale, Rea, Myers and Ross? Or Does DL Hall fit in there instead of Ross? Kuhnel to spot start until Ross or Hall ready?
If Freddy could hold up his part it would be nice
I think we should run even more and earlier. Put more pressure on the pitchers.
I must admit I was way wrong on Tobias Myers. I love the way he throw strikes and doesn't make obvious waste pitches. He's a solid 3 or even a 2. Just avoid the 1st batter HR
Glad the Keuchel experiment is over. At least he ate up 15 innings. His WHIP must have been aronud 2. There just had to be someone in the minors better than that.
They definitely limped into the Allstars break. If and when the make a playoff run they'll get knocked out early like every year if they play like play like they did in the last 2 weeks .
I sure would like them to land a true number one in there rotation and have them under contract for next year .
lotta Mitchel haters out there, this guys gotta hit 5th the rest of the way, gives you one of the best at bats you can get
It shows how important joey bat is. I really hope for a better utility player at the trade deadline
As a Cubs fan, I am quite amazed that your pitching has held up this long. That's why I continue to have hope for my team, as we have one of the best ERA's amongst starters, in the league. And that's including Hendrick's awful numbers. Lol
Cardinals and Pirates are coming Brewers going need another Starter by trade
Wouldn’t diss the Pirates anymore – may have the best starting pitching in the division.
They aren't playing like a first place team
Glad you're OK Chuck – was beginning to wonder. The starting pitching has amazingly held up enough. Hope they can find a quality starter. But let's not let this up and down offense off the hook either. They need a high quality bat too. The roster is what it has been… an upper 2nd tier team which nabs you division championships, but instills little confidence when matched with MLB's "favored sons" franchises.
Regarding the draft – hope this 6'2 kid can put some weight on that frame and give them a consistent power hitting OF in a few years. They have enough speedy guys. We need more long ball for balance. I'm more intrigued in the comp pick 1B with some good size already. Can't wait for the draft review episode with your former intern.
