Why the Canucks might trade for one of Montreal’s young defencemen

the following is a hockey podcast out of Vancouver and Sor British Columbia it’ll only consist of a lot of pup talk and even more BS or in actual words banter and satire enjoy and as always go Canucks go are the Vancouver Canucks really going to enter next season with this defense really I’m not convinced and what I’m also not convinced of is the Montreal Canadians hanging on to all those young defenseman maybe there’s a match between the Canucks and the Canadians let’s get into it here unlocked on Canucks your locked on Canucks your daily podcast on the Vancouver Canucks part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day hey he he welcome to another episode of Locked on Kox my name is Trevor begs the co-host of lockon conu and also a Canucks Raider since 2013 currently with daily hive Vancouver before we dive into today’s episode we gotta thank you I’m talking to you for tuning into to lockon Canucks you know why because it is your Canucks every damn day even in the middle of July when nothing’s going on and Patrick Alvine is hanging out by a Swedish Lake in his speed okay we still got you covered all right and you know we’re part of that locked on podcast Network and for this show if you haven’t done so already what are you waiting for make sure you go subscribe or follow for free on YouTube or wherever you listen to podcast I’ll got to let you know today’s episode is brought to you by indeed are you hiring are you looking for work come on make sure you go use indeed okay and if you’re hiring you can start hiring out with the $75 sponsored job credit to upgrade your job post at indeed.com lockon teration apply need to hire you need indeed the Vancouver cans do they need to hire another Scout on defense you know what um the pro scouting has improved a lot since the gym Bing days but on today’s episode lockon kxs I want to pose this could the Vancouver Canucks and the Montreal Canadians swing a deal and the reason I bring this up is twofold I think you look at the Canucks defense first and foremost and I’m just not convinced that they’re done upgrading the defense they got a little bit of cap room to work with still and when you look at Montreal they got a surplus of young defenseman how good are these defenseman and could any of them be potential fits for the Vancouver Canucks let’s get into some of the names uh that could potentially be shipped out of Montreal on this dou lockon Con we’ll touch on best fits for Vancouver uh the pros and cons of some of these young defensemen in Montreal and again hey we’ve seen it in this city this is the environment where you want young defenseman this is the team this is the coaching staff that resurrected Tyler Myers’s career that turned former Canadian Prospect Noah Json uh from a guy who looked like he was lost at the NHL level to a really respectable guy who can play minutes on an NHL team um so there’s some uh some parallels there to get into I also want to end off the episode talking about the best trades between Montreal and Vancouver uh let’s just say this this is not um these aren’t two franchises that have traded together very often we obviously saw one trade last season with Tanner Pierce and Casey Smith but in general the canox and Canadians don’t trade often but that might change in the days weeks months to come who knows who knows okay but again the Montreal Canadians so really with their situation right now it is interesting because you know they’ve drafted they’ve acquired uh quite a few young defensemen and you look at this team right now and they have two veterans it’s Mike Mat and this Dave saard uh and the rest of it is kind of young guys trying to figure things out in the NHL so uh I’m gonna go through the depth CH quickly here for the Montreal Canadians and this is courtesy of havs eyes on the prize okay my former my former co-workers over at s SP Nation before those uh those bastards they pulled the rug on say shout out to nuconic shout out to H’s eyes on the prize now the Montreal Canadians do have more depth on the left side okay so after Mike Mat they have Kaden they have Jordan Harris they have Arbor WiFi Arbor Jacky um and they also have Jaden strubel as well so that’s five guys on their left side uh all of whom played quite a few NHL games last season Arbor Jacky is the guy who I think a lot of fans I probably know the most the guy came out of nowhere two seasons ago um and was throwing down with some of the best fighters in the game putting up some goals likes a crunch bodies I think it goes without saying that if the kcks have a preferred Target I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s the their guy but you know in the past he’s been rumored uh to be on the trade market but Montreal is asking a pretty high price for him because of again you know that um that PO that unicorn like mentality that he brings right there’s not a lot of guys who are 65 230 like aror Jacky who can skape pretty well and Chuck the body around and hey you know there’s a thirst in this market to replace the hole the 6 foot6 250 hole left Min ke zorov and yeah I know they got forbert and I know they got de har but I do believe this organization like to take another swing on a young Prospect or not even a prospect a young Defender who can make an impact um but there you go there’s five names I listed on the on the left side I I’m gonna put Kaden gly probably up running um to be traded mainly because he was steady top four defenseman for Montreal last season um the guy he averaged he averaged the most even strength ice time among among Montel defenseman more than Mike Mat and more than Dave sard so I think Kaden gly is you know probably going to cost too much um in terms of guys that the conman acquire but the other three guys there Arbor Jacky Jordan Harris and Jaden strubel those are guys who again are all five of them gonna make the NHL team next season these are just left side guys let’s take a look at the right side guys as well I mentioned Dave seard you also have Justin Baron H and Logan may he was really good in the AHL last season uh got a very small cup of coffee played one NHL game last year we actually recorded his first NHL point in that game 6′ three big mean guy um for a couple Reasons I’m not going to have him on this potential acquisition list for the Vancouver Canucks because I think the Montreal Canadians value him quite highly right um I think you know some of the Rumblings coming out of Montreal is that this guy you know could be playing ahead of Justin Baron in terms of right defense next season okay so I’ve listed eight guys in total and that’s not to even mention some of the top prospects in Montreal who could play NHL games season uh one of them is Lane Hudson uh um Tom wander partner for part of the Season or at least teammate at Boston University uh he is now signed his Pro contract could he play an ATL games for this team that wouldn’t surprise me he got a cup of coffee last season and of course you have David Maka uh the rde of Austria who was drafted fifth overall back in 2022 so there’s 10 defenseman in Montreal right now um who could all realistically be buying for roster Boss Next season okay and again I think there’s probably four guys here who could potentially be traded and it is uh Arbor Jacky Jordan Harris Jaden strubel and Justin Baron on the right side now let’s I’m gonna touch on the sex sexiest name and that’s Arbor Jacky because I do think that the Canucks would be interested in acquiring this guy just based on who they chased in free agency right you know Derek forbert signed to a one-year $1.5 million deal he’s on a long-term solution he’s a guy who can you know eat up um minutes on the bottom pairing he can kill penalties and David de har in in in a similar mold as well except obviously a bit younger and of course you know we mentioned on the show before every dayers know maybe even occasional listeners know uh but Kyle Bowen my co-host who’s not here by the way um another another bad weekend with the chocolate bardi for Kyle uh but he he did an episode uh right after free agency talking about how Vincent de har the goal for him is to be better than Darnell nurse and you heard alv talk about it right he likes the project he likes the idea of having a big physical defenseman with some potential uh who they can mold moving forward now the one thing to know with arbit Jacky is you know the guy um he had some injuries like last season right um you know it was surgery which ended his season but he only played 44 games last season overall he’s actually still unsigned at this point so I’m not going to go offer sheet territory um but this is a guy who again is still unsigned and you know I’m not quite sure monel has got the cap space to do it um so yeah it’s interesting to see what’s going on there with Arbor Jacky Justin Baron also um is a guy who uh is unsigned right now so again there’s a couple defenseman in Montreal who maybe these guys aren’t the first choice to be making the team next season because of the guys I mentioned could Arbor Jacky lose a spot because yeah sure he’s big and physical but you know a guy like Jordan Harris was more reliable overall he was more reliable on the penalty kill um so I think Jordan Harris is is slotting ahead of the depth start an arbor Jacky and that’s what um our friends Habs ASA PR are kind of alluding to as well um and then on the on the right side just Baron he’s gonna be competing against Again David Ryan Bacher Logan Mayu for spot on the left side how much do they pay that guy so decisions to make in Montreal but I do think aru Jacki again would be probably the number one target for the Vancouver Canucks but he’s is he the most likely guy to come to the Vancouver Canucks I’m not so sure about that so let me break down some of the other names on this list on the other side I’ll get a bit more into Justin Baron I’ll get a bit more into uh Jordan Harris and Jayden strel as well the trellion one if you will shout out to uh don Taylor the goat you’re listening to lockon Canucks your Canucks every day on the other side against get into those names also rank who’s uh most to least likely to come to Vancouver out of those four names and what a potential package could look like all that on more coming up on the other side before that we got to show to our friends over at indeed all right I know someone you might want to slack off during the summertime okay who needs a job you know the Sun’s shining the beach is there podcast you heard it it’s indeed.com lockon terms Supply need to hire you need indeed you sure do baby let’s go all right all right you’re back here un locked on KX again my name Trevor begs without my co-host Kyle Bal because you know what this guy Kyle bow he has 86% of the work on lockon konu so once in a while I got to step up on my own do some solo episodes man okay and here I am talking about defenseman of Montreal come on Patrick Alvine I know you’ve worked hard one of the GMS of the year I guess we’re on R GM of the year but you know I do think there’s a world in which Patrick line could swing a trade with the Montreal Canadians here and we talked about Arbor Jacky being you know a nice fit uh on defense for the Vancouver conu SK 93 he gets it man a Jacky day har pairing would be menacing okay you want to talk about an identity for your Vancouver Canucks you know a Jacka de Hern pairing that’s to me that’s scarier than just having Nikita zadorov on your team those are two of the most mean and physical guys in the NHL now I think for acquiring Jacky I think the conversation probably starts at a third round pick which I think a lot of Canuck fans would do that in a heartbeat right you think Nikita zadorov again an older player on an expiring contract but a cap at around 3.75 it cost the Canucks a third and a fifth rounder to get him I think it’s going to cost I like to I think in the ballpark that’ll that’s what Jacka will cost I think it might even cost more not by much though because here’s the tradeoff right I mean zador have much more experience think you know what you’re getting Jacky you’re paying a bit more for the potential right um but I do think Jacky is one of those guys who probably tops out as a bing pairing defenseman but you know when you got Quinn Hughes and Philip pronic on your team and a Carson Susi can you know if he can hit and stick as a top four guy then really all you need is a bottom pairing guy to solidify things and araj Jack guy again he’s got some some flash to his game in a way that’s uh mainly physical right not a guy who’s often killed penalties in Montreal unlike another guy on this list who doesn’t really fit the mold of what the kucks are looking for um and I actually I’ll actually bring these guys up together because I think they’re similar skill sets um but they play on the different sides okay and that’s Jordan Harris left shot D for the Montreal Canadians and Justin Baron a right shot D so Jordan Harris again he was trusted a lot for the Canadians last season um average more ice time than Arbor Jack out when he was in the lineup uh played a lot of penalty kill time from the Montreal Canadians in terms of the fancy stats in terms of the numbers look the numbers weren’t really kind to many Montreal Canadians defenseman last season uh but they were kind to Jordan Harris uh he was the only Montreal Canadians defenseman last season who had an expected goals of above um sorry that’s actually Arbor Jacky Arbor Jack had the only Canadians defenseman with expected goals above 50% at 50.6% but Jordan Harris coming in second with an expected goals just below 50% and again I think Jordan harrry’s got a bit more Runway last season in terms of the NHL um he’s got u a little bit more of I want to call Troy statue in this game I know it’s probably be lazy comparison for a guy who’s a bit smaller I mean he’s 5’11 One n he’s not small small um but you know he’s just one of those guys who moves well not the most amazing skater doesn’t have the best shot but just a smart player defensively um and again came from that Northeastern University program uh where a lot of conu prospect developed over the years including uh you know guys that are no longer with this team like Aiden mcdna and Adam godet among others um but again Jordan Harris wouldn’t cost a lot to get I don’t think know he’s signed right now for one more season at $1.4 million to me an intriguing depth option especially when you already have some size in your back end with Json forbo and day har I think Harris could be a guy who um could challenge for some bottom pairing next season now with Justin Baron again a bit more offensive flare to his game he’s a little a little taller uh than Jordan Harris and could get squeezed on the right side and look this is already a guy in Justin Baron who was considered a top prospect and was already traded once in his NHL career um now he was a Colorado Avalanche Prospect um who was traded uh along with a round two pick for aruri Ling it okay so cost the Colorado Avalanche basically he was a uh a first round pick in that 2020 draft as well so first and a second for T linan that’s worked out pretty well for Colorado um now one of the interesting things with Justin Baron is that you know in the NHL last season the guy had seven goals 13 points and 48 games so that’s that’s not a battle streak for him right he’s kind of pushing that 12 goals 25 points um not a bad pace for a botom pan demon interestingly enough at the AHL level his production wasn’t as good um but look I think Jordan Harris and Justin Baron you got a couple projects on your hands right um Justin Baron a little younger uh at 22 years old Harris is 24 years old B more upside with Justin Baron and he plays that premium position at right shot D um but again I don’t think either of those guys are really what the Canucks want in terms of a bonding pring defenseman although there’s a strong argument that they need better Puck moving right and of the four guys I listed Jordan Harris Justin bar uh Justin Baron better Puck move less physical Arbor Jacky and the fourth guy have not mentioned Jaden struble both have more physicality to their games um and Jaden strel I think is a guy that no not many fans know about um but he was pretty good last season for the Montreal Canadians in limited minute so he ended up getting into 56 games from Montreal uh was throwing the body around you know had a kind a pedestrian three goals 10 points at 56 games uh seven points in 13 AHL games uh Jaden strel also 24 or 22 years old I should say um I honestly think he’s the least least sexy name on this list but I would say that he’s maybe the most likely player that Canucks acquire mainly because I think he’ll actually cost the least right he doesn’t quite have the the name cache uh that Arbor Jack guy has um he doesn’t have the kind of the offensive flare to an extent that Justin Baron or or Jordan Harris have um but he’s a physical guy just got his cup of coffee in the NHL last season and again think he’s hard pressed on that left side um with the guys I mentioned ahead of him right the Mike Matson the Kaden ghouly uh if you count Jacky Harris who are both ahead of him on the Jeet chart even Lane Hudson I mean look the Montreal can according to abaz in the prize Jaden strubel is six on the Montreal Canadians organizational je depth chart six so he’s a second pairing AHL defenseman according to uh uh the the Habs eyes on the prize so that’s a guy who I think it would is gonna be hard pressed to make the Canadians team next season uh who does require waivers to my knowledge um and again I think thees could get some assets for him so that’s maybe a guy I see a similar trade to what they did with Jonathan kovich uh maybe a fourth round pick for Jaden strubel so I’m gonna rank it like this I think Jaden strubel Arbor Jacky U then Justin Baron and then Jordan Harris that’s probably the order in terms of what the con would Target most least um I think Justin Baron over Jordan Harris just because of you know that need on the right side a bit more um than they on the left side especially because hey tler Myers is still the second pairing right shot defenseman on this team let’s wrap up the show on the other side actually okay I’ll mention one more thing there’s one comment I wanted to get to I’ll get to a couple other comments on the other side and this comment comes from SK 93 would you trade pod koulen for Jacky one for one now I think that’s certainly a conversation I don’t know want I don’t want to say that’s a tough one man I’m leaning towards no because I think with pod coen’s draft profile I still think that there’s you could probably get more value for pod KS and that being said I do think at this point at pod Co and top out of being a third liner you’re probably happy so do you want a third like how valuable is a third line player versus a physical bottom pairing defenseman I actually think that a pod for Jacky trade could be somewhat close to fair value I think if the canox made that trade fans of this Market would widely applaud it I think that would be a trade that would be widely accepted in this market because again this city still has a hard on for Nikita zadorov and Arbor Jacky would do a lot in terms of replacing that I think he’d be missed in Montreal um I could see Jaden strubel getting more minutes if they trade AR with Jack guy because you still want some physicality on your back end um but again part of the reason I wanted to have this conversation is because Montreal has this dirt of young defenseman not all of them are going to play and none of them are going to really cost a lot right as sexy as aror Jacky might be again again I think a pod koulen or a third round pick is probably what you would get or have to give up at a trade for Jacky um and some of the other guys I mentioned too they have high draft profiles but again when you got guys um facing waiver crunches and you might lose them on the waiver wire for nothing now something that Montreal has to consider and I think the kcks found thats El in that spot a couple Seasons back with uh some of the guys didn’t work out as much like the Troy stretchers and the Ben Hutton so I know we could be talking about a bunch of Ben Huns and Troy sters here but uh let’s pretend that these guys could maybe be a little bit something more um and hey those guys are both carved out some NHL careers they’re both still sticking around in the dance past the age of 30 if I’m not mistaken all right TR D Emon Ben Hutton with the Vegas golden knights let me know in the comments which of these young defenseman you be most interested in acquiring I imagine as guy for most of you but I do see some love for other guys here I’ll get a couple comments on the other side one of the other things I do want to do to wrap up the show here is talk about trades between Montreal and Vancouver because it’s List season baby and I’ve gone through every single trade between the Montreal Canadians and the Vancouver Canucks let’s get to the other side of rank them in the middle of summer here un locked on Canucks [Music] all right all right you’re back on lock on Canucks your Canucks every day again I’m Trevor begs not joined by my co-host today Kyle Bowen who I heard he went on a I heard he went on a marathon of sorts last night right I heard he went on a a sex Marathon basically yeah he did it man he did that all night Marathon buddy I’m proud of you man and that’s why we’re eventually going to be sponsored by Seer vager here on lockdown K KY Bal kudos to you and your big old what a guy man so proud of Kyle man Round of Applause Round of Applause for Kyle B man now again he’s uh maybe not as talented as some of the defenseman I mentioned there on the Montreal Canadians but uh you know people are uh people are excited about Arbor Jacky man um so Bob Bob Bluer Teddy bler cousin say he’s getting all jacked up jacked up on Jacky uh Stefan dubba maybe a Canadians fan here um joining the chat says he’s not going anywhere Arbor he’s staying in Montreal yeah I mean like he’s not certainly not an immovable guy in my opinion he’s not uh he’s not a core member of the Montreal Canadians so I think anything is possible I think the Canadians would prefer to trade probably the three other guys I’ve mentioned right between uh Justin Baron Jordan Harris and Jaden droal I think those guys are more likely to be moved than Arbor Jacky um and there’s a reason why Arbor Jacky is probably the most desirable player among those four for your Vancouver Canucks I think a lot of other teams probably feel the same way right physicality is still something that anyil teams need okay now one thing I wanted to do is point out that the conu and Canadians over the years have not made a lot of Trades okay so I’m going to rank some of the biggest trades between these two teams ever I will say say that the Canucks and Canadians have traded 13 times since the Canucks entered the NHL oddly enough four of those trades came within the K’s first year of existence they traded with the Canadians on in November of 1970 May of 1971 June of 1971 and September of 1971 two of those trades were just uh uh they traded two players for cash two players I’ve never heard of and that’s saying something because I’m a bit of a nerd but um between these teams I’m going to rank the biggest in my mind the biggest three trades between these teams and from there I think it’s uh kind of slim Pickins but number three I’m gonna go the ks trade yassen Kore for Donald Brasher back in nov 1996 and I know Donald Basher was not a world beater but he was a beloved figure in this market uh for quite some time Basher um watching him flight is among some of my first conu memories and know I’m either dating myself either old or young here probably more on the young side let’s be real it done for Vancouver Canucks for a long time uh spending what was it six seasons here with the city uh the second biggest straight between these two teams ever uh in my opinion uh was back in January of 1991 where the Canucks trade a fourth round pick for Gerald dck okay speaking of big tough guys uh Gerald dck maybe not quite as big and tough as but still a guy who um was part of a team in 94 that went to the Stanley Cup finals all right and then finally the biggest trade and I think this is an easy one between ever between the Canucks and the Canadians uh was back in 1990 March 6 of 1990 when H the Vancouver canox and GM pacquin trade a second round pick for yur Lum the best finished player in Canucks history let’s go baby uh y obviously one of the best defense one of the best defensive in the city’s ever seen um AR You could argue maybe he’s the best offensive defense been ever in this market until Quinn Hughes came along uh and still a guy who’s active in this community to this day so shout out to YK Lumia who actually he turns 58 tomorrow buddy so happy early birthday to YK Lumi if you listening to the show man fellow cancer here um got to sh up the buds okay some of the only other trades between these two teams in recent memory really since the they’ve only traded three times since the locko 0405 uh that was back in 2014 when the Canucks traded Rafael Diaz for Dale whis of course they then flipped Diaz like two months later for a fifth round pick that end up being Adam godet for a little trade tree there uh there was the Cassie and a fifth round pick for Brandon trust Brandon press trade and of course there was the Tanner Pearson Casey A Smith trade from September those that’s the only three trades that these two teams have made in the last 20 years so I’m just saying I think these two teams might be poised to make a deal here okay because they’ve done it recently I think they could do it again let’s wrap up the show with a couple of comments here unlocked on Canucks uh let’s shout out um this comment from Steve okay Steve saying Noah Json is underrated yes he stepped up to make big hits with burn the team that’s also on the forwards for not backing him up look on a number of L s Noah Json took so many steps forward last season and you know I this comparison might sound weird uh because I have this guy in my mind for earlier in the episode but I see him as almost a more physical Ben hudon like Ben hudon would make those mistakes that when he made them they were glaring they were glaring now Ben hunon was mainly just turning the puck over and making bad reads Noah jwon um you know as to what Steve’s alluding to he’ll step up and make that big head and he gets burned on it now I will say that it’s and this I think it’s every typical hockey team the forwards are always blaming the defense the defense are always blaming the forwards right but in the two instances I can think of where Noah jeson stepped up to make that hit and one was against the oers in game three I believe or game four actually after Susu got suspended um and then in in the regular season he stepped up on Mark shley in both of those moments he’s stepping up where he shouldn’t step up because the other team’s rushing back the other way he doesn’t have coverage like even if julson steps up the forwards are coming back trying to support him but they’re just they don’t have the time to catch up so you know I think both of those moments I’d be interested I’d love to be a fly on the wall to hear what Adam fo says Noah julson in those moments because you want the guy to be physical but you also got to pick your spots too and I think Noah julson it was a big learning curve last season I think he’s still learning to pick his spots um and I’m curious about how many NHL games no Json is gonna get next season I think a lot of that’s going to depend on the performance of Myers and the performance of De har um because again it’s I think more about this Tyler Myers than the second pairing and I don’t like it I don’t like it one bit but I do think much like last season the kucks as they’re currently constructed are going to roll at the top two and bottom four which is basically what they did last season you’re going to see Hugh and heroni eating up 23 24 minutes a game and the other guys I think the other two pairings might be somewhat even with the Susi pairing maybe getting a bit more than the bottom pairing last comment here I’m going to go back to Bob Luger because man oh man this a trip down memory lane you you should um you know again you listen to lock on kcks your kcks every day uh thanks for making this your first listen of the day if you join us early here uh go make your second Liston locked on NHL and if you’re on YouTube make sure you go look at the rip Rick rippen 1. Canucks are smart to look at Montreal. Habs have a stuffed prospect pool on defense. Even with the players the host spoke on there are still more prospects pushing up like Lane Hutson, Adam Engstrpm & Bogdan Konyushkov. This doesnt even list the core of Laval dmen(not incl Mailloux) and this years draftee Owen Protz who could be Xhekaj 2.0. Every said, the Habs must move some dmen. The problem is how well all these kids have played so far in the NHL makes it difficult for management to move a couple out. Xhekaj although is going to cost more than a 3rd for sure however like Guhle I dont think Montreal management have any interest in moving him. It would take a lot to get them thinking. Struble Harris & Barron are all NHL dmen and make a nice fit. NOTE- big fan of Juulsen. A former 1st rd pick of Habs who started so strong and then completely knock down due to injuries. I hope he recovers everything he can of his pro career…He is a dude you just want to cheer for

  2. One of the stupidest podcasts I have ever half heard. The rumour last year was Philly offering a 1st for Xhakej. Mtl let it be known he was not available. Just dumb and out of touch

  3. What does the Canucks have to offer that would interest Montreal? I don't see anyone that is a realistic trade chip. Also, Arber Xhekaj is not available, 0% on that happening. But I get it!! it's nice to dream right? But be realistic, Arber Xhekaj is not getting traded… at least not in the next couple of years. UNLESS you grossly overpay, but again this brings me to my first statement, what does the Canucks have to offer that would really interest Montreal?
