Turns out that guy who responded wasn’t being ironic!
Not trading away Bellinger and Stroman last year fucked the Cubs HARD.
I think some fans forget that the Cubs were trash for most of the 1st half of last year too, but got really hot(they went 10-2) just before the deadline. So, instead of selling, they stood pat.
Had they sold those two, they get 2-4 top prospects and either trade those prospects for an impact bat they could really use this year or hold them and have a few more high level prospects ready to make the team and get them that much closer to actually competing.
Instead, they signed Bellinger to a stupid contract and let Stroman walk. Of course, Bellinger regressed, and they’ll probably be on the hook for him for the next few years because there is no way he gets $52 million in the next two years on the FA market. So that’s a roster spot and a ton of money that they can’t use to better their team.
That decision to hold on set their rebuild back like 2 years.
