Sucks to lose a guy like that, the Walker Buehler comp was exciting.
Having an extra top-70ish pick next year should help though. This should give them two picks in the competitive balance rounds and 5 total in the first 100 just like they had this year.
The top of next years draft is supposed to be better than this years anyway. Not the worst year to punt the pick into next year.
Fuck him then.
Really, this could be a good thing. This year’s draft class was the weakest in years. An extra pick in a stronger class is a plus.
He’s an absolute damn fool to go to college. Especially if he’s being offered in the $2-3 million range. Why waste bullets at college? The risk is obscene what if you get hurt or worse? You lose a year of development, and tank your stock and leverage. Just a very dumb decision IMO. Totally understand going to school if you aren’t drafted high. Even more so if you’re a position player. But a pitcher?! This baffles me and it is a major bet I hope it pays off for him… odds are it won’t.
Welp he didn’t sign and we whiffed on our contingency as well. I really really dislike the Payne pick now.
