I could live with it if it was a hard pitch count, but to say full bullpen and then Milner is the choice is crap. Has to be Koenig if you’re prioritizing a lefty and are fine spending all your bullpen arms to get one.
Murph does this a lot I’ve noticed. Defends decisions by saying “well it could have done differently”… generally this logic holds up reasonably well and these are tough decisions, but it just doesn’t work here at all.
Milner came in for the lefties. He gave up a 101mph line drive single to the first lefty. Then he failed to put away Yepez after getting up 1-2 and gave up a 96mph line drive single. Great K against Garcia for the first out, but then he went down 2-0 to Ruiz and although the infield single was obviously a slow dribbler, it was on a terrible middle-middle sweeper. And then the triple was on a god-awful 88.6mph fastball straight down the middle.
There’s no reasonable argument that Milner pitched well. He gave up 3 low line drives, a strikeout, and a slow ground ball on a bad pitch down the middle after falling behind 2-0. There isn’t even the whole Peguero classic “well he got his ground ball” argument, 3 of the hits were sky-high xBA line drives. He pitched like shit, and although his advanced numbers are pretty decent the results have not been there. Trusting him over an excellent Myers (literally only one hard-hit ball since the 1st) was stupid at the time and cost us the game.
I understand the thinking but I don’t agree with it. Myers wasn’t dominant but he could’ve carried them through another inning.
Give the kid a chance! Metrics are not EVERYTHING

I don’t recall Milner walking anyone. He gave up 3 singles and a triple-no walks.
It would be one thing if they were actually bringing in a good reliever been Milner has been horrible.

Nah this just isn’t good enough. If you want to play the matchups card then fine, bring in Koenig.

I feel like Murph is trying over manage now and it’s costing us some games.

The only thing that bothered me about pulling him was the result, the logic makes sense. I don’t know if Milner is my first choice there, but it is true he’s been dealing with some unlucky shit for awhile now.
Assuming we make the playoffs, we’re going to need Myers, Peralta, Rea and some other pitcher (hopefully Misierowski swooping in with some difference making shit). With as much injury to our pitchers we’ve had, I’m okay with us giving these starters the bubble wrap treatment in certain situations like this where we can use our bullpen and rest them easily as well.
I bet that this third time through the lineup thing is more like the pitcher starts to lose crispness as he gets into his 80s and 90s with his pitch count.
I like Tobias Myers as a young rookie pitcher and very professional MLB player. All pitchers end up gettting a “hit” or “homerun” against them. I was at the game in July 2024 against the Nationals when Megill pitched a homerun to CJ Abrams. I was so sadddd. It was right after Peguero has left the mound! He pitched the best that game.
Brewers may have one of the best bullpens in baseball, but that does not include Hoby Milner. Instead of going through a bunch of verbal mumbo jumbo, it would be nice to hear a manager say he made a mistake and if given the chance, he wouldn’t pull the starter.
