Only highlight of the game: Seinfeld references
Canning is running out of time
1 less hit, 8 less runs. yikes

Besides the first few weeks, Schanuel has been very good 🙂

Oh no, we suck again
The biggest shortcoming of this team is everything except for a few bright spots. But one of the biggest symptoms of this is how bad we are on the fringes, which is a symptom of our poor organizational depth.
Obviously, Canning’s going to catch a lot of flak for this game and his season. But it’s an organizational failure that he’s basically our #2 pitcher (now that Soriano’s taking some rest) and we don’t have any definitively better options. Our other starters are a barely ready rookie (Kochanowicz) and a reliever who’s not really started since 2018 who we’re trying to stretch out now (Fulmer).
We do have theoretical SP options. Detmers should be back up soon. Silseth would be an option if he didn’t get hurt. Davis Daniel and Kenny Rosenberg haven’t been good, but they also were projected to be around replacement level. Bachman might still turn out alright.
However, none of them outside of Detmers are slam dunk back-of-the-rotation guys for the rest of this season, and only Silseth is at all proven in the bigs. Aside from these 5, we’re waiting on Caden Dana, Aldegheri, and Brett Kerry (Klassen eventually). I think we won’t see anyone else until 2026.
We can also see this on offense too, specifically looking at our rankings in WAA for DH/PH. It’s where teams stick their biggest remaining bat for a guy who might not hack it at any defensive position. Production from our DH has been so anemic (3rd to last in the league), and we’re tied for 4th to last in PH. Obviously, DH has been dominated by Calhoun, but the fact that Calhoun was the best bat we could find out of all the available players (including our organization) shows how shit our system is.
[The 7 worst teams by WAA in the league are all in the bottom 8 WAA for DH, and I don’t think that’s a coincidence.](https://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/majors/2024.shtml)
The worst part of it is that other teams are using it to spread out among 3 or even up to 5 players, especially to give their everyday catcher some defensive rest, but also just to cycle through the other positions. We’ve used it that way sometimes, but holding an essentially DH-only player on the roster takes a toll.
Tonight’s game was hard to watch in person.
