Doug Armstrong: “I think it was reported that I wouldn’t’ve done this to Kenny Holland. That’s the furthest thing from the truth. Quite honestly, I’d do it to my mother if she was managing the Oilers. My job is to take care of St. Louis Blues fans and organization.”

  1. Tons of cap left in St Louis, no worries there. The Blues add a couple young players to their their NHL roster for cash instead of assets. They are only 2 year deals so even if they don’t reach the level Armstrong thinks they will it’s not that onerous. This is not an 8 year boat anchor.

  2. I’m not going to say that Armstrong took advantage of a vulnerable Oilers team, but apparently Bowman is trying to actively cover up what just happened

  3. I loved this quote as well. I really hope that one of the alumni or his GM buddies texted him to say that his mother was on the other line. 😆

  4. Wings fan here and I am absolutely here for Big Dick Doug and his Blues this upcoming season!

  5. As an Oiler fan, I am so choked. Brogerg and Holloway both took steps last year and, if not for Edmonton’s depth chart, would be top 4 D and top 6 F respectively on most NHL teams imo.

Broberg looked phenomenal in the cup final and was the best skating defenseman on the Oilers’ back end in the 7 games vs FLA. Broberg’s top skill is his skating, second is his ability to carry the puck out on his own when the pass isn’t available. He never gets beat wide, and never loses a race. His shot and passing are good, but not elite. His defensive game is on the cusp of being top 4 level for a playoff team. I believe Broberg just needs a chance with a veteran partner.

Holloway seemed to have a mental block. He was the second fastest player on the Oilers roster and was the only forward who seemed capable of scoring from distance with a wrister on the rush. Even still, he just never seemed to gain the confidence needed to be a top 6 forward. Despite having unbelievable physical tools, he was behind McDavid, Draisaitl, Hyman, Nuge, Skinner, Henrique, Kane, and Arvidsson on the forward depth chart. There really was no place for him for at least 1-2 more years.

At a glance, Holloway looks like a stud, but Im not sure if he can figure out the mental game.

In my view Broberg isn’t exactly a “deal” at $4.5million, but I believe, by the end of year 2 he will meet expectations for a D Man with that contract. This year, I would place expectations around a Brett Kulak and/or Tyler Myers(at his current level) type.

The ceiling, and future, is what you’re paying for though. Broberg has the tools to be a $7-$9million caliber d man in my view. At worst, you’re getting $2.5million in value right now, at best… much much higher
