  1. i have a feeling they tried to trade him to winnipeg for mcgroarty (maybe not 1for1 but some kind of package deal) and laine had winnipeg on his no trade list so that deal wouldn’t work unless he waived his no trade clause. almost immediately after laine was traded to the habs, mcgroarty was traded to pittsburgh so it seems either the habs or columbus were interested in him and when that deal never came to fruition they went with the offer from pittsburgh

  2. Good way to ensure you end up on a team that isn’t depleting its assets to trade for you.

  4. I’d venture to guess the coaching staff/culture was the deal breaker for Laine, and not fluff like the city.

The guy just went through a tough time, with a team whose leadership and staff structure was in shambles. What you usually want after that is some emotional comfort. A positive environment, a supportive structure.

For hockey players, that starts with the people they spend every day with: players, coaches, trainers, etc. The fanbase and medias come way later.
