[The Athletic] Ranking NHL rebuilds: Which teams are most likely to be contenders?

1. Chicago Blackhawks 2. Ottawa Senators 3. Anaheim Ducks 4. San Jose Sharks 5. New Jersey Devils 6. Utah Hockey Club 7. Buffalo Sabres >Buffalo has been a sexy pick to take a big step forward for several years now. The Sabres have drafted high for a long time and have built up an envious group of young players. They have two No. 1 blueliners in Rasmus Dahlin and Owen Power and a deep, talented group of forwards. They could become a contender, but at some point, if they can’t progress into a consistent playoff team, their young team will just look like previous iterations of Sabres rebuilds.
8. Seattle Kraken 9. Montreal Canadiens 10. Minnesota Wild 11. Columbus Blue Jackets 12. Detroit Red Wings 13. Philadelphia Flyers 14. St. Louis Blues 15. Calgary Flames 16. Pittsburgh Penguins
Typical garbage from the athletic. Would love to know what they were smoking with Chicago at 1 and San Jose at 4. Have to think they’re both 2 years away at least. Ottawa, Buffalo, and NJ at least have mature enough rosters at this point, regardless of how people personally feel about their chances
Edit: just read the article. The author says San Jose is “at least 5 years away.” And yet, they’re higher than New Jersey and Buffalo lolololol
