[Curt Hogg] Pat Murphy’s reasoning for sticking with Koenig, paraphrased, is they were closely monitoring Devin Williams’ workload and wanted to get him up in case there was a spot to face a hitter or two, but not more. They felt good about Koenig’s chances after a clean ninth.

  1. In a vacuum, I’m sympathetic to that reasoning. But Murph also used Devin pretty liberally when he first came back and stuck with him too far long on at least one occasion when it was clear he didn’t have it. So this is still pretty frustrating

  2. Ha. Whatever. It’s a fucking playoff race, there are two weeks left in the season. Play to win the game at this point in the season

  3. Also noted Payamps had forearm tightness and didn’t come back out for the 8th and the whole plan ended. That makes this make more sense. Sucks but at least there’s more context now

  4. The coaching staff know the pitchers and their limits better than we do, so while we all hate the decision, I can understand it. It just hurts because we came back from down 5, blew it, and then took the lead again.

  5. If he pitches the whole inning that probably means he isn’t available for at least a game, maybe two vs Philly. Koenig was pitching well so I get trying to get 2 innings out of him.

Listening to Murphy postgame it makes perfect sense, the Payamps forearm tightness created a domino effect and it just sucks that Koenig completely lost it in the 10th. Gamble that didn’t pay off.

  6. Once again, it’s September, so we can afford to mess around a bit. Plus now we have him available tomorrow for Philly

  7. I always thought you win the game in front of you and worry about tomorrow tomorrow. You don’t know you if will need Williams the next 3 games but you KNOW YOU NEED HIM TODAY! Really bad call by a manager I like.
