I’m totally fine with having Kaliyev as long as we actually use him
Huh. Figured he would have been long gone by now. He’s a one dimensional player and wasn’t even good in the area he’s supposed to excel at. Never saw the guy hustle, never back checked, never played defense. Could be my own bias though
Just the play the guy
This seems eerily similar to the situation where Gabe Vilardi was 2 years ago. Where a a player somewhat grudgingly signs a contract with the team who still controls him under RFA status without arbitration rights. A situation where the team and player are equally frustrated with each other and at a crossroads in their relationship.
Of course we already know what happened with Vilardi, he had a long awaited breakout season, gained attention league-wide and went somewhere else immediately the next season. Five years of flat caps left the Kings with no room to breathe salary cap wise; and Vilardi accepted a guaranteed $7 million from Winnipeg over 2 years.
So even if Kaliyev has a breakout year with the Kings, I’m not going to hold my breath waiting for a contract extension if you know what I mean. Of course the Kings should have far more salary cap flexibility next summer but I still won’t hold my breath.
Because in the end, it’s like The Mayor’s sidekick DB says…. “He’s a different kind of cat!”
Good, now give him a fair shot on the 3rd line with some quality line mates. If he’s still got a grudge with the team after that and/or doesn’t improve his defensive game then trade or waive him and move on.
