Seattle to get back Supersonics history if NBA decides to expand there. OKC will be treated as expansion team (2008-present)

The Oklahoma City Thunder will give the Seattle Sonics their history back if the NBA grants Seattle an NBA team, per @espn

“Sources said if a team was to return to Seattle, the Thunder would cede the Seattle history back to the SuperSonics — just as the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets reclaimed the Charlotte-era history of the New Orleans Pelicans when Charlotte switched from being the Bobcats to the Hornets in 2014.”

  1. This has been known for 16 years, since the city of Seattle and Clay Bennett came to terms on a settlement for the team’s relocation.

“Sources” are just people familiar with the lawsuit settlement agreement, which is publicly available. Or maybe it’s ESPN using [its own article from 16 years ago](https://www.espn.com/nba/news/story?id=3545175).

  2. The Sonics are returning, aren’t they?

May they fare better than the other re-activated franchise of professional sports, the Cleveland Browns.

  3. As it should be, makes me sick every time the Titans wear the Houston Oilers throwbacks. Who cares they wore the jersey for a year in Tennesse, that history is all Houston

  4. Give it back? They never got to take it in the first place, it was negotiated when Bennett stole, I mean moved, the team.
