Broward County amends, extends Amerant Bank Arena lease with Panthers

  1. Good.

#1 Good to see that the county will have the option to pay off the arena debt, hopefully they do that with the lump payment.

#2 The $25 mil from tourist taxes annually is meh BUT if the upkeep and improvements keep it as the venue long-term, that’s great. It’s good to see an arena/stadium not being replaced so soon (see Turner Field in ATL, etc.).

#3 The surrounding development will be interesting to watch. The location has always been an issue for some (I disagree with that), and adding additional stuff to do around the arena would help greatly reduce the (“it should be downtown somewhere”) thing. There *will* be lean times again, and having more of a reason to head out there, that is a revenue stream the team controls, will help keep things going.

  2. From the article:

The new 9-year agreement between the county and the Panthers runs through 2033. And Broward County will have the option to retain the Panthers at the 26-year-old county-owned arena for two additional five-year terms, totaling 19 years if both options are activated on top of the new lease

  3. Awesome – I don’t care what anyone says I love the arena location. So easy to get to and free parking in Sawgrass is always a win lol

  4. Awesome. Although I no longer live in the area, I love the arena. The drive from West Palm to there was always enjoyable and it’s easy enough to get back on the turnpike after a game. Would hate to see my childhood team move, even to FtL or something it just wouldn’t feel the same.

  5. I think this is a smart move for everyone, keeps the team in Broward long term, lets them develop the parking lots, but also keeps the door open to other spaces in the county should they come available.

I think long term the only reason ther location that could make sense is where Interest Miami plays. Does anyone know what happens to the space once they move south?

  6. Build build build!! Would be great to get an arena village area on site there! Build apartments, hotels, restaurants, and Bars!! A space to go before and after games along with a spot to go to even on off days

  7. If the Panthers and the county want this multi-year extension to work, the smart idea would be to convert one end of the parking into dining, retail, and entertainment, and convert the other end into a multistory garage. Fashion a comprehensive gameday experience that will keep fans engaged before and after games while creating a more walkable environment without having to depend on that shitty mall across the street

One of the major drawbacks of the stadium currently is that the parking footprint is way too big, you can fit five stadiums in the parking lot. Not a smart way to maximize use of the space
