  1. So it’s totally not game used. Youll notice the game used ones are rubbed with that mud. They won’t be white like yours.

  2. It looks too clean. Game used balls are rubbed with mud to give the leather a different feel. My guess would be that this is a real ball from batting practice.

  3. This looks like it could be a game ball. Impossible to know which without some documentation. They go through so many during a game. Hits the dirt, hit, doesn’t feel right. They all get replaced with the inkling something isn’t right

  4. From a person who collects balls at the field.. this seems to be a reject ball from Rawlings (didn’t pass quality check) which is then sent out to teams as pearls and used for batting practice. A game used ball will be rubbed in river mud and have a light tan cover to all of the ball.

  5. Definitely not “game used,” it wouldn’t be that white. In-game balls are rubbed with mud beforehand.

  6. I would suggest it would be impossible to tell unless it came off the field and into the hands of an Authenticator. I had the privilege of doing this job in the NHL and during the Olympics. Linesmen would take goal scored pucks from the net/ice take them to the penalty or time keepers box and they were identified by off-ice officials. Once the puck or ball in this case leaves the surface of play and disappears from sight of officials or cameras the chain of possession is broken and impossible to 100%authenticate.

  7. ‘Game used’ could mean several things. It could be a ball hit into the stands during BP. It could be a ball that was used during warmups and thrown into the stands. It could be a ball that was actually thrown by the pitch and hit (it clearly has a smudge from contact). Regardless it’s an official MLB ball. Throw it on a shelf next to your bobbleheads!

  8. Unsolicited souvenir ball fact: I own the first ball ever put into play by the Red Sox A affiliate Greenville Drive. Thank you good evening.

  9. It’s not game-used. It’s too white. All balls to be used in a game are rubbed with mud before the game.

  10. Any game used ball usually gets some mark from a MLB official to indicate whether or not it’s been used in a game.
