  1. From the tweet thread: “for instance, I didn’t realize that the Mets have almost 50% of the biggest payroll in baseball coming off the books at the end of the year. That’s equivalent to the 14th highest payroll in the sport worth of expiring contracts/obligations. and I took the honors of projecting out a winter’s worth of moves that has the payroll landing in the same spot it is right now.

Spoiler alert: the Mets would be really good in that scenario.”

  2. Its not crazy to imagine the Mets spending over 100m (in terms of adding to 25 payroll) to build a legit WS contender. Soto, Pete, front line starter, pen help. These may not *all* happen because shit happens (like someone gives Pete 7/200) but after this run I dont think Cohen is going to shy away from spending just because of the tax. Even with just Soto and bringing back some depth guys like Iglesias, this lineup would be lethal.

  3. The Mets have to attack Soto HARD. Ik this sounds crazy but give Soto 100 mil more than whatever the Yankees offer him. If they offer him 400 mil, the Mets offer him 500 mil. If they offer him 500 mil, the Mets offer him 600 mil and so on.

It’s the only reasonable way we can pry Soto from the Yankees and with the current contracts they have (Cole, Stanton, Judge, Rodon), idk if they can afford getting into a pissing match with us.

I love Lindor, but his offense just isn’t good enough to where we can realistically build a WS team around him. We need another bat, and Soto is that guy. Steve Cohen has talked about investing in this team, now he has a real chance to prove his vision by grabbing Soto from the Yankees, at whatever cost.

Hopefully we can land Soto on a 14yr/600mil deal with a player option after year 4. I would even be fine with a 14yr/700mil deal.

  4. He mentions that he considers Center field “TBA”, but I have to think Gilbert starts the opening roster next year. Especially cause Stearns was just like “ahhhh fuck it” and called Jett Williams up to Triple-A after barely playing in Double-A.

  5. Lets not jump ahead of ourselves. We need to see these rookies and prospects play for a bit before we say they are going to be good. Also we are probably losing some arms in FA this offseason and need to see how they are replaced but yes for the 1st time since Cohen has taken over we have an actual big league team that is filled with big league talent and have a farm that is constantly getting better. We are set up for success and have the ability to replace players that want to much like an Alonso with cheap rookies that will produce similarly and spend on HOF level talent like a Soto

  6. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves… the Mets have not had any sustained runs of success outside of the 80s… but I do feel confident this might be the turn

  7. I’m not worrying about the off-season. That’s for when we don’t have a season anymore. Let’s kick Atlanta to the curb starting tm!

  8. I am actually worried about the farm. It did not have a good year. But the current team is good. The transition from 2022-2023 tells you how volatile a team can be. And you can say the same based on Mets baseball since like 1999 at least. We’ve never had a long window of contention in my lifetime. I could see us eventually becoming that kind of team, but I think the Mets need to be more aggressive with trading prospects in the future. Also need to get better at drafting and developing. Heck I’d probably appreciate the conservativeness with trading prospects if we were really good at that. Resetting the luxury tax soon feels like a must.

  9. A big thing this season’s turnaround did is, in my opinion, help raise the Mets standings as a place to choose if you’re being offered similar contracts from different teams.

Sevy and Manaea have also elevated us as a destination for pitchers I think.

  10. I never would have thought this group would do what they are doing. Not only is it beyond impressive but it’s been done relatively quietly….we should be considered a team nobody wants to face come October

  11. It’s a great read and makes you very excited for the future but I’ve been through this before. 2005 and 2014 seemed like they were the years before some massive, continued success.

Granted, this is an owner who has put all the right pieces in place with one of the top executives in the sport, but it’s better to remain cautiously optimistic.

“So, if we land on a potential offseason of Soto, Alonso, Bader, Snell, Manaea, and Bieber as the main pieces, with only Alonso getting more than three years at over 30 years old, the 2025 Mets would have a payroll almost exactly equal to this year’s team.”

I really think Vientos should be DH. Whether that opens up Baty for 3B, split time with Mauricio, or they bring in a backup IF to platoon via free agency or trade, Vientos should take JD’s spot as the DH on the team.

  12. I quickly read this headline and saw the words “drivers seat” and thought we were dealing with some sort of Duaner Sanchez thing here. Phew.
