New York YankeesYankees+2What do these things have in common? Austin Wells’ jersey number, the fourth track on Zach Bryan’s latest album, the next leap year, Davey Allison’s Ford Thunderbird NASCAR ride, the Book of Hosea in the Bible, President Woodrow Wilson, the atomic number of nickel, seven times four, and most importantly, the number of championships the Yankees are gonna have by the end of November?92-64
Los Angeles DodgersDodgers-1Have we made sure Shohei Ohtani is a real person? Maybe I'm just imagining all this and the Dodgers are really fighting to get their 40th win. Maybe Ohtani has been on the Blue Jays this whole time and the Dodgers instead got the shark tank guy. All I can say is this whole season has felt like a fever dream and I'm incredibly excited for the playoffs.93-63
Philadelphia PhilliesPhillies-1The Phillies had a bad week in the W/L column (2-5) but they've built enough of a cushion to still be in a comfortable position. Their magic number for the East is 1 so the first division crown in 13 years should be locked up. There's still plenty to play for though, as they could very easily get the one seed (1 game back of the Dodgers with the tiebreaker) or collapse and get the 3 seed (3 game lead over the Brewers with the tiebreaker). A 3-4 record this week against the Cubs and Nationals would clinch a first round bye, but they should definitely be aiming for home field throughout the playoffs (currently 1 game back of the Yankees without tiebreaker, 2.5 up on the Guardians without tiebreaker).92-64
San Diego PadresPadres+3Though it was a bit close for comfort, the Padres finished their last homestand of the season off in style, with a comeback win in a sweep of the Whitesox. Remaining are 6 games versus division opponents, which could be looked at as psuedo playoff games. It's unlikely, but a run here and we could still win the division. A more realistic outcome is to do well enough to fend off the D'Backs, so the Pads can have home field advantage in the short series that follows. San Diego set attendance records this year, nearly averaging a sell out. It's hard to imagine we'd be in this place just 5 years ago. All it takes is an organaization that at least wants to try.90-66
Cleveland GuardiansGuardians-1The Guardians won the ALC! At the beginning of the season, I said I'd be content with 500, but here we are. I'm not sure what's going to happen in the postseason, but I didn't know what to expect from the regular season either, and look what happened 🙂90-67
Milwaukee BrewersBrewers-2This year has been absolutely stellar for Brewers fans, no matter what happens in October. Week one of power rankings, my blurb closed with "whether or not this team is still playing meaningful baseball this September will likely come down to if the youngsters prove to be impact players right away." Just about every young player this team has called on has produced. Chourio is the 7th most valuable outfielder since May 1st in his age 20 season. Turang and Ortiz are in the top 10 at their positions as well. Frelick and Perkins have been absolute gems with the glove and Mitchell has returned from injury to mash some baseballs and play plus center field, and he isn't even the best defensive outfielder on the team. Not to mention the sudden appearance of TobiACE Myers and the rest of the many arms that have somehow held together a respectable rotation. This team is very different from the sucessful, pitching-first and discount lineup Milwaukee teams of the past, and I want them to break the first round exit curse of those teams so badly, but no matter what happens, this team has already proven itself beyond anyone's expectations, and they'll be even stronger in years to come.89-67
Houston AstrosAstros+1Yordan is "not great" and neither are my hopes for a deep postseason run. It just doesn't feel like the year for us. Too many injuries at the worst times.85-71
Arizona DiamondbacksD-Backs+1The Diamondbacks continue to be an enigma, losing two of three to the Rockies in Denver before taking three of four from the Brewers in Milwaukee. Winning a series against a potential playoff opponent in the Brewers would normally inspire confidence, but the last game of the series saw the Snakes lose a game they at one point led 8-0. The hitters can hit and the defense can defend, but will the bullpen be able to bullpen enough to make the playoffs, much less win in them?87-69
New York MetsMets+1It's coming down to the final week for our beloved Mets. The state of affairs – 3 remaining in Atlanta, 3 remaining in Milwaukee. Lindor still hurt but hopefully back as soon as Tuesday. Senga not going to return this week. Acuña is the fucking truth. Whatever happens, it's been a fun year, and I expect we'll go bonkers in the offseason.87-69
Baltimore OriolesOrioles-5Limping into the playoffs is an understatement. Sure, some injured players are coming back, but the saying goes, too little too late. The needs are glaring for this team, it can't be just home runs or no runs. They need contact hitters and ones who are clutch with RISP. Should be a quick out once the playoffs start.86-70
Atlanta BravesBraves+1To be 2 games back in the Wild Card going into the final week of the season, but yet still control your own destiny is a rare thing…but that is exactly the situation that the Braves are in. The next 3 games are against the Mets, the very team who are 2 games above us. If we sweep that series, we takeover the final Wild Card spot and can try to hold on over the final 3 games. Winning 2 games still gives us a shot, but it would be in the hands of others. If we lose 2 games…we will have to try to catch the Dbacks. If we get swept…well that pretty much ends the season.85-71
Detroit TigersTigers+4How about those "gritty tigs"?!?! If we pull this out, AJ Hinch for AL Manager of the Year. What performances recently- from Austin Meadows' HR robberies, to Kerry Bonds' dongs, to Skubal bearing down on a Triple Crown, to the nameless bullpen consistently putting up zeroes- the Tigers now control their own destiny with six games left. LFGGGGGGG. This week: 3 vs. TBR, 3 vs. CWS.82-74
Kansas City RoyalsRoyals-2What a difference a week makes. The Royals are free falling like Tom Petty and are in danger of missing the playoffs. While missing the playoffs would be disappointing, I'd think any Royals fan would have been ecstatic to just be contending for a playoff spot at this point at the start of the season. Injuries have hurt, especially to Pasquantino. The Royals, if nothing else, are set up for a fascinating offseason.82-74
Seattle MarinersMariners+1All signs point to the M's finishing a game or two short once again, as is tradition – and if the payroll rumors are true, they may very well have squandered two of their best shots in decades at a division title and a serious run. Or maybe chaos ball reigns supreme and the Mariners somehow sneak in. Anyways, this is my final call of the year for Stanton to sell the team to someone who actually cares about the product on the field. Goms, Gobiz, Thank Fulgar, Siddowb, and please don't eat birdseed.80-76
Minnesota TwinsTwins-2The Twins this month: https://i.imgur.com/cDqqAv5.png81-75
Chicago CubsCubs-280-76
Boston Red SoxRed Sox0Well, the end of the baseball season has come again. Another year of low expectations, a tantalizing middle, and a late season collapse from a worn out pitching staff. It seems like things will be different next year, considering our outfield logjam its hard to imagine us not trading for some help pitching, and with oodles of cash on hand they should finally be able to acquire some top tier talent in the market. I'm keeping my expectations low considering the recent track record of cheap behavior from FSG. Also extend Casas 10 years dude is a fucking beast.78-78
St. Louis CardinalsCardinals0The Cardinals picked up a pair of series wins this past week. So that's nice. I guess. Whatever.79-77
Tampa Bay RaysRays+1While technically not eliminated, time is running out for our .500 loving Tampa Bay Rays. Despite every peripheral saying they should have a worse record, they march on in pursuit of perfect, Guthix-like balance. That being said, beating up on some division rivals on the final homestand is a nice way to go. We got an immaculate inning from Ryan Pepiot (ironically in the one loss last week) and Jonathan Aranda is so back. One more week to #RaysUp!78-78
San Francisco GiantsGiants+1Every time I watch Young and the Restless, I can never figure out why everyone is mad at Adam. Sure, he lies, cheats, and punches people but generally he doesn't do anything worse than all the other characters. The Giants do a number of things poorly, but I similarly don't get why they aren't a couple of games over .500 right now. Yeah, a number of players died, regressed, and they have a strange infatuation with stranding runners, but then you sit down and watch the Royals series and are stuck thinking — "This team is capable when they decide to not suck". Giants fans didn't really deserve this combination of bad luck and shit play. If they had picked just one, they'd probably be fine. If Adam pumped the breaks on cheating, he'd probably get away with the rest. You can't have the men AND women of a soap opera mad at you. Anyway, Giants can still finish at .500+ and any day now Adam might be less of a bad guy.77-79
Cincinnati RedsReds+1The Reds have been eliminated from playoff contention76-81
Texas RangersRangers-3Welp the World Champions are officially eliminated from the Post Season. Max Scherzeer has thrown his last pitch as a Ranger most likely and potentially the last one of his career as well. Sucks to see a HOF career due to injuries like this but father time is undefeated.74-82
Toronto Blue JaysBlue Jays0Crappy week that ended with a sweep at the hands of the Rays to officially eliminate the Jays from the postseason and make this a losing season. Vladdy's ascendance has been our bright spot, but otherwise it's tough to not feel much but disappointment at this year of underperforming offense, injuries everywhere, and a bullpen that shit the bed in ways that beds have never been shat. There needs to be a LOT of accountability taken, along with some big moves, this offseason.73-83
Pittsburgh PiratesPirates0Oneil Cruz played all of 9 games for the Pirates in 2023 and Paul Skenes wasn't even in the organization until July of that year. This year, Skenes joined the rotation and put together one of the best rookie seasons in history, while Cruz is approaching a 4 fWAR, best among Pirates' position players. These were best case scenarios for each of these talented players, and yet the Pirates are basically going to finish with the same win total they had in 2023. Five years into Ben Cherington's Great Rebuild, the Bucs have clinched their 6th straight losing season and are once again in last place — and again, all this despite great seasons from Skenes and Cruz. Nothing captures the ineptitude of this organization quite like that. Derek Shelton may be fired, but Cherington should join him; and if Bob Nutting wanted to jump off the top of the Steel Tower, I wouldn't be opposed.73-83
Washington NationalsNationals0Nationals sure are taking a gamble with sending CJ Abrams down to the minors. I hope it does him some good, though!69-87
Oakland AthleticsAthletics0Well wheels fell off the pitching but that's what happens when it's all pre-arb guys plus one washed up vet another team is paying67-89
Los Angeles AngelsAngels0Red dirt fades to dusk, Angels grounded, dreams adrift, September slips by63-93
Colorado RockiesRockies+1I wish Shohei Ohtani played for literally any other team.60-96
Miami MarlinsMarlins-1The arms are still iffy, but at least norby is showing some good approaches at the plate.57-99
Average Little League Team0The coach's kid isn't even that good.
Chicago White SoxWhite Sox-1Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the worst AL team of all time. And there's still a week left.36-120
