  1. This often goes unmentioned but Bud Selig developed an eternal hate for Oakland because, in 1967, Selig tried to buy the A’s from Finley when they were in Kansas City, and move them to Milwaukee. (He also tried to buy other teams like the White Sox.)

Ever since then, [he had it out for Oakland](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9B6vTP-kAtk). He [screwed over](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVlXbORV3_Q) Reggie Jackson’s ownership group and [steered the sale to his frat buddy, Lew Wolff](https://www.sfchronicle.com/sports/ostler/article/bud-selig-bungled-a-s-sale-17858602.php) and his group which included John Fisher. Within 18 months, they tried to move to Fremont. That was the plan all along. When the A’s sought to claim territorial rights to San Jose, Bud Selig stood shoulder to shoulder with them at press conferences.

Manfred is Selig’s hand-picked successor who carried out Selig’s vendetta. Manfred said they’d “regret leaving Oakland.” He was lying. He did everything he could to wrench this team out of Oakland.

If they wanted to stay in the market, they would’ve forced a sale to any of the countless ownership groups [browbeaten by Manfred into silence](https://www.si.com/mlb/athletics/relocation/interesting-wrinkle-to-oakland-a-s-relocation-saga-01j32ce3ytbr).

If they wanted to stay in the market, they wouldn’t [waive the relocation fee](https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/Daily/Issues/2023/06/05/Franchises/mlb-waives-oakland-athletics-relocation-fee-las-vegas.aspx).

If they wanted to stay in the market, Manfred wouldn’t have [twisted the arms of owners](https://x.com/judeuth/status/1839440073861005416) who agreed with San Diego’s Peter Seidler that relocation was wrong. Seidler died shortly before the vote, allowing Manfred to secure a unanimous vote.

  2. Manfred pretty much does hate baseball. Regardless what you think his job is supposed to be, it’s been pointed out many times that he’s basically a cold and calculating labor law attorney who does not like or understand baseball.

  3. Remeber when there would be congressional investigations about shit *players* did? How about a congressional investigation for the actual crooks disgracing the national pasttime? Way too much to ask, I know.

  4. Fuck John Fisher and Rob Manfred, but let’s remember that these guys are largely just doing the bidding of the other owners. They were going to force a team into Las Vegas one way or another.

Fisher could have stopped this from happening to Oakland, for sure, but Manfred couldn’t really.

  5. A protest by fans down the stretch and into the playoffs would say a lot. I wish we had the will as fans of baseball to come together in such a way. Empty stands, plummeting viewership numbers. If the MLB doesn’t care about fans in Oakland they will turn their back on *any* fan base when it comes to money. This isn’t right.

  6. Oakland, you are some of the best fans in all of sports, and I am sorry for what has happened to you and to this great team. Baseball is worse off with the Oakland A’s gone.
