Looking at the list for the Cubs, I see some pretty good bargains (Steele for $6.4M).

I would be willing to go with Almonte, Tauchman, Merryweather, Alzolay, Peason, Paredes, Steele, Herget, and Keegan for sure. They are affordable and/or decent players.

My maybes would be Bethancourt, Madrigal, Wingenter, Brewer.

My one no is Wisdom. I just struggle paying $3M to a guy whose batting average is getting worse and worse every year. I like him, I like his personality, but I just don't feel there is value there. Maybe bring him back on a minors deal or as some sort of staff member.

  1. If your out on Wisdom you have to be out on Madrigal as well. The only difference between the two is Wisdom can actually hit HR’s.

I’m fairly confident Madrigal will be gone this offseason but I could see Wisdom sticking around another season tho. I was really hoping Wisdom would be hot enough in June/July to be a rental or trade piece.

  2. Wisdom is probably gone along with Madrigal. Its possible the cubs re sign them on minor league deals but i dont see them getting paid.

almost two million for a guy that was just sent to triple a isnt worth it. Wisdom is older and his defense isnt great. Both roles could be played by a younger and cheaper player.

  3. Madrigal, Wisdom, Bethancourt, Brewer, Wingenter, Almonte, and Alzolay will all be non tenders. Almonte and Alzolay may get two year contracts since both will be injured for at least some or most of 2025.

Steele, Paredes, Pearson and Merryweather will be tendered.

Tauchman is interesting because with Happ, PCA, Suzuki, and Belli you have four OF. You also have Alcantara and Caissie waiting in the wings. It wouldn’t surprise me if they non tender just because they want to know what they have in those guys before Happ and Suzuki are off contract in two years.

Keegan is probably the most interesting one. He has value but he’s out of options at this point and it wouldn’t be unheard of them being ready to move on.

  4. Madrigal a “maybe”

I’m not even mad, I’m fascinated.

I want to put a lab coat on and then put you in a giant chamber of plasma and study you. I am deeply intrigued by anyone who is still uncertain about Nick Madrigal.

  5. So I think al 17 of the 3rd basemen we had this season need to be traded, cut or not resigned.
What we should do is have Paredes as the starting 3rd baseman for next season.
Next we get Matt Shaw playing nothing but 3rd base next season until he’s ready.
Once he’s ready bring him up and Paredes can platoon in the infield.
We can now have a pretty decent and young infield.

There’s an opportunity cost to having so many “affordable and/or decent players” on your team. You miss the chance to fill that roster spot with a better player or a more affordable one and upgrade a different position.

Tauchman is a fine 4th OF, but if Bellinger opts back in, you’re going to be paying Tauchman $4+ million to sit on the bench and wait for someone to get injured. Is that worth it? Or could you find another nice defensive outfielder and pinch-runner in the minors for less than a million?

Both Merryweather and Alzolay are going to miss part or most of the 2025 season. Do you want to be paying them to sit on the 60-day IL and rehab? That money could be used elsewhere.

I don’t even know who Herget is. And both Yency Almonte and Keegan Thompson are Just Guys.

If we know that Jed has a “hard cap” of the 1st CBT level, then he can’t afford to spend even a few million giving roster spots to the players such as the ones above.

  7. Let Wisdom go, he can drive down to Rosemont and join Narciso Crook with the Chicago Dogs and put up 30 home runs with them, but the Dogs actually make the playoffs every season so he may not know what to do when hes asked to play games after the regular season.

  8. I mostly agree. I don’t see a need for Madrigal, I’d rather use Shaw or Triantos in his spot as I think that they will be clear upgrades over Madrigal. I think Bethancourt will regress next year back to his 60 OPS+ average and probably isn’t needed. Again, I’d rather bring up Mo baller and try him even though he can’t throw guys out for shit. Ideally we would sign or trade for someone though

This is probably unpopular, but I think Tauchman has to go. We just have too many outfielders that are ready to play. We have Alcantara and Caissie that for sure need ABs this year. We have Canario who actually had success in the big leagues (in his limited time). Tauchman is great when he’s hot but another average guy at the plate isn’t what we need. We need guys who can possibly be above average, and I’d rather take a risk and give those ABs to the young guys.

  9. If we cut Wisdom to save 3 million he will play everyday and hit like 30+ home runs for like Seattle or Miami and this sub will flame ownership for being cheap i.e. schwarber 2.0.

Find me another player who has 30+ home run potential and gets paid as little as Wisdom.

That batting average comment by OP is ignorant.

  10. Way too much dead-weight, way too close to this year’s and last year’s rosters if we just bring so many of these guys back.
