  1. Cool trivia question.

Who is the only player inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame to never play in the NFL?

Answer: Billy Shaw. Played his whole career in the AFL before the merger.

  2. This man’s photo is in the dictionary next to the term “class gentleman.” When I was stationed overseas, the base library had a copy of the book “When The Grass Was Real.” It was about the AFL-NFL wars in the 60s and some chapters were written by some of the players and coaches who made a difference in those years, including Billy. When a buddy and I got to go to the reception after the enshrinement ceremony that the Bills threw for Billy, I mentioned the book to him and that I was still looking to find a copy. He gave me his card and offered to send me an autographed copy. I felt a little funny asking for a free book but I found one a few weeks later on Half.com and had it in hand with me when I went into the Fieldhouse before a game he was at. He remembered talking to me in Canton and happily signed the book.
As an added note, many know that when he made his speech on the steps of the Hall that day, under the giant orange juicer, he forgot to thank his wife… something that Eric Dickerson ribbed him for in his own speech. What isn’t as widely known is that he almost forgot her a second time. While most of us were still at the reception, he was ready to head up to his room… except he almost took off without his wife…she was talking to me at the time lol.
R.I.P. to a great player, but an even better person.
