“Tragedy” – Brewers Pat Murphy on Dramatic 9th Inning Elimination to Mets in Wild Card
“I love this team. I’ll never be able to duplicate 2024. It didn’t end the way we wanted to. It ended tragically actually. It felt like it, and it felt like a tragedy,”
-Milwaukee Brewers Manager Pat Murphy in his post game press conference after their shocking loss and elimination.

Pete Alonso’s dramatic three-run homer in the ninth inning off Brewers closer Devin Williams stunned Milwaukee as the New York Mets claimed a 4-2 victory in Game 3 of the NL Wild Card Series. The Mets’ come-from-behind win on Thursday night secured their first playoff series victory since 2015, sending them to a historic NL Division Series matchup against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy was emotional in the postgame press conference, giving full credit to the Mets’ star players. “It’s baseball. You got three players that are upper-echelon players in Lindor, Nimmo, and Alonso, and they did what they do,” Murphy said. “A walk, a base hit, and an opposite-field homer. They did what they do.”
The Mets’ resilience continues a red-hot stretch, as New York has had the best win percentage in MLB since the end of May. This sets up an exciting clash in the NLDS, with the Phillies hosting the Mets at Citizens Bank Park on Saturday at 4:08 PM. Despite Philadelphia winning the regular season series 7-6, the Mets enter the playoffs riding high after a hard-fought Wild Card win.
Milwaukee, meanwhile, has to digest another disappointing early exit from the postseason, their fifth straight first-round defeat. Still, Murphy emphasized pride in his team’s achievements. “The Brewers have been to the playoffs in six out of seven years with one of the smallest budgets and in one of the smallest markets in baseball,” he said. “I’m disappointed like anyone else, but things happen.”
Murphy stood behind his closer despite the tough loss. “Devin has been as good a closer as there is in baseball for the two and a half years that he’s played,” he said. “I’d give him the ballgame tomorrow in the same situation and any other game I’m involved with.”
Though the loss stung, Murphy praised his team’s resilience throughout a challenging season filled with injuries. “I love this team. I’ll never be able to duplicate 2024. It didn’t end the way we wanted, but I love them. They competed, they hung together,” Murphy said, reflecting on the Brewers’ adversity.
With the Mets advancing and the Brewers left to reflect on missed opportunities, this year’s NLDS between the Phillies and Mets promises to be a fierce rivalry battle.

Idiot….if you knew your star closer was too pumped up…why didn't walk out there and talk to him?
LETS GO METS!!!!! ALL HAIL GRIMACE!!😂
I'm a Mets fan but I like this guy!
This is Devin Williams' fault. He singlehandedly ended this for everyone. His command is awful.
🐻❄
This guy did everything he could tonight. His all world closer couldn’t shut the door
Dodgers need to hire this guy
I’m a Mets fan but I loved watching the Brewers in this series. What a smart, gritty team. Will be peeking in on their games next year for sure
Who cares, trump will win Wisconsin which is more important
Bragging about how well they did with such a small budget……. That’s the whole problem! Sell the team to someone….people….who are willing to spend money to bring CHAMPIONSHIPS to Milwaukee! Winning the division once in a while means nothing…..Current owners have no business owning this team.
They are not willing to spend the money needed….NOT ONCE!!!!! If I were Adams’s and Jackson…..I’d be gone as soon as possible…..I’ll get paid ANYWHERE……But I also want to win it all……chances of doing that in Milwaukee are VERY LOW!!!
This coach is an IDIOT.. There literally was no reason to take out Peralta who was already warm and pitching well for a cold Williams. If I was the owner I'd fire his dumba$$
3 game series is not enough! To show the better team. MLB is playing Vagas!
Murphy is completely a class act. One of, if not the best, manager in baseball
Him smiling in the thumbnail when the title says “tragedy” is killing me 😂
In the playoffs, records and stats dont matter, not even talent. It's Who has the most Hunger and Grit- Wins.
Came to gloat as a Cubs fan, but I'm not gonna bother since there's no sport in it. 56 seasons and counting of abject failure says it all.
To lose like that, really earned the name BlewCrew. 😂 It's ok, gotta laugh at yourselves.
Yesss 🤣🤣🤣 brewers don’t like them im so happy they r out
Brewers don't make enough money for mlb for mlb to want to push Milwaukee!!! Just like the WWE the wrestler who fills the most seats ìs the one being pushed!!! Your "heroes" have been pulling the wool over your eyes in the name of money!!! Get real heroes like Jesus or Trump!!!
Class act. I'm a mets fan but this guy is a class act.
Why take out Fred and put in that 🤡 Williams!! Should have let fast ball Fred finish the 9th!! Horrible call by the manager! 🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️
brewer fans just have to except the fact that the Milwaukee brewers. will never win a world series the only thing they can hope for is the brewers stay competitive during the regular season and be happy with that. because other than that this franchise is going to continue to have the small market syndrome .
Cubs fan in May: "We need a Devin Williams to beat the Brewers!"
Cubs fan in October: "Nah, that's OK we'll look elsewhere"
I've known Pat for 40 years and he's always been a class act! Go Triplets!
Yay Brewers, celebrate how good we are in the regular season and how garbage we are when it matters. The White Sox would beat us in the post season, I guarantee it.
Respect to the Brewers.
LFGM 🍎
I'm a Mets fan but have to be honest this playoff format really screws over the 3rd division winner. I mean you won your division and are forced to play in a 3 game Wild Card series? Brutal
As a Cardinals fan, seeing the Brewers lose brings me joy. I’ve never seen a team flexing & bragging about winning the division, you would’ve thought they just won a World Series the way they be acting🤣
A 3-game series against the hottest team in baseball was going to be a challenge. After this game, I understand why Mariano Rivera got 100% of the votes for the Hall of Fame. The value of a dominant closer is priceless in these moments. Josh Hader and Devin Williams have had awesome regular season performances in the past for the Brewers. But the postseason is what separates the great players from the good ones. That being said, good season for the Crew!
devin williams is a tragedy-again
Another year another choke job
I am happy as hell because I am a Mets fan. This Murphy guy is ok with me.
Amazing series. Well faught on both sides. That's baseball. Let's go Mets!
Moron was paid to loose, how else could you crack a smile after taking out a starter putting up a goose egg, your stud closer goes in the 8th 3 up 3 down then you put in last years choke star Williams.Willy couldnt pitch 2 innings in a row? paid to loose and beer can fans crushed again by a team being paid to not go to the big show. That's for the Dodgers, Yankees,Mets ,Giants, Milwaukee don't deserve a world series win any way because they keep selling us out.wont take my family to another game i could manage better.SELLOUTS
You also stopped swinging at first pitch strikes, stealing bases on first pitch when playoffs started. That's what made us a tuff team to beat we didn't follow the unwritten rules.Made us a ball team that played fast and furious not predictable and boring
Class act. Played us hard. LGM!!
This guy is fucking clueless. Fire him
Murphy is a class act. But Devin Williams as a closer is all smoke and mirrors. Yes, his numbers and ERA are great but there is almost always drama when he takes the mound. He is not an overpowering pitcher and has moments where he can't throw strikes when his "air bender" as they call it isn't working. He routinely walks players and gets himself into jams. Most of the season he was able to pitch his way out without giving up any runs but when he pitches it's always drama. His saves are almost never 3 up 3 down.
I knew as did most fans who routinely watch the Brewers that it was trouble when he walked the lead off batter which is a cardinal sin for relief pitchers. This one has to be hung on his shoulders. Also, the pressure is on another level in the playoffs and the closer needs to be able to handle it and he looked very nervous right off the bat.
Williams tipped his pitches

Salary cap!!!!!
keep your head up Pat
Very humble
Hope they fire their "analytics guy"
