Houston Rockets Preseason Expectations: Better Pace, Balanced Offense, Consistent Jalen Green & More

Can the Houston Rockets faster pace of play redefine their offensive identity this season?

Host Jackson Gatlin (@JTGatlin) discusses Houston Rockets preseason expectations heading into game one against the Utah Jazz, three key things to watch for including Ime Udoka’s emphasis on better pacing and how that benefits players like Jalen Green, Amen Thompson, and Cam Whitmore, a more balanced offensive approach instead of overreliance on Fred VanVleet and Alperen Sengun, and which version of Jalen the Rockets get to start this season.

  1. Not sure you wanna see Jalen pick up where he left off. He was 17 ppg on 39% fg, 28% 3pt shooting in the last 8 games. These stats were mostly going against the teams trying to make the playoffs when the rockets were in the mix. And if he plays anything like he did during the scrimmage uploaded, oh boy it’s gonna be a long season.

  2. Is Tari ready to go? I've been getting the sense he's behind. Pace can only go up when you're at the floor. The nuances Jackson is always talking about are fine but when you need a stop or you need a bucket those are pivotal moments and they don't just come at the end of games. So, I'm looking to see if they've developed more bread and butter.

  3. Udoka has a lot of raw talent in his team. If he's smart, cunning and creative as we believe him to be, then he should go beyond ortodox plays like pick and roll and change the current paradigm.

  4. Amen had a triple double at the end of last season. Might have been against Portland. Ime said Amen CAN be a point guard. Then Reed can be the shooting guard so we don't have to play 2 shorter guys at the same time. Aaron and Fred played together a few times last season, that didn't seem to work well defensively.
