  1. Good wake up call to the boys.

“If the skill isn’t willing to work hard then the hard work beats the skill.” This is what I would summarize last nights game.

We were winning the first period not just because we were the more talented team, but we were forechecking hard and winning puck battles and finishing on our scoring chances. We stopped doing that and got out worked by the Flames in the last 40 minutes.

Silovs also can’t let in all 3 of goals 2-4. I think he had not chance on goals 1, 5 and 6, but he should have atleast stopped 2 or the 3 goals in 2-4, those long range goals can’t go in on him.

I believe Lankinen is the better of the 2 goalies and I can see them give Lankinen a few starts especially if he wins the next game.

  2. shitty way to lose the game but whatever the reason for them stepping off the gas was (confidence, energy, idk), hopefully this reminds them exactly why they can’t do that lol. at least we picked up a point amidst our choke job!

i forget which show, but i believe it was one of the 650 ones who mentioned prior to the game that calgary was really the only team in preseason who seemed to take advantage of shots from the point against šilovs, and they suggested it might be that they are a team more inclined to do that anyways because their stronger players are defencemen. i’ll be interested to see if teams do consistently try shots from distance against šilovs, or if the ones with stronger forward groups will continue to prioritize setting up shots the way they usually do. unfortunately it’s undoubtedly a weakness right now, and i don’t know if there’s much to be done to improve it beyond just getting more nhl experience.

  3. Good: First period and powerplay.

Bad: Team got complacent, bottom pairing was bad, Silovs wasn’t so good.

Oh well, at least we got a point out of it.

  4. Looking forward to getting back into the Win column. Better to have a shit game like this in Game 1 than when it matters.

At least for any future losses I can look forward to the insane meltdowns.

  5. At a certain point, should someone be questioning why Tocchet is so unwilling to swap goalies during a game? Not that Silovs was the *only* reason we lost, but he was going through a rough stretch in the third period where Calgary scored three goals on four shots or something like that. Maybe putting in Lankinen would have been the mental reset the team needed, before the game began to spiral out of control.

  6. Looked a lot like the team post-ASG last year. Sometimes white hot offensively, mostly muddy play, constant line juggling trying to figure it out, and guys like Hughes and Miller putting the team on their back. But this time, without that hardcore D structure that insulated whoever we had in net. Desharnais and Forbort don’t replace Zadorov and Cole.

  7. We looked sloppy, but like Hughes said, they really took the pedal off the 1st period. I think they got overconfident.

    Pros:

    – DeBrusk looks good. He knows where to go to create space

    – Boeser hasn’t skipped a beat. He’s listening to Allvin

    – Hughes had a sick play to tie the game at 5. Only guy with a +2

    – Miller, what more can you say? He’s the Captain if it aint for Hughes

    – Forbort and Desharnais coming to back up Miller as soon as he was jumped. Desharnais also keeping Flames in check when people bump into Hughes.

    – Garland, Sherwood and Hoglander look terrific

    Cons:

    – Sprong needs to learn defence

    – Pettersson needs to play better in general

    – Silovs is not ready yet

    – Team in general stopped skating after the 2nd and 3rd period

Best to get these types of games out of the way early. Not worried at all.
