  1. Needs to become more consistent before taking this many off balance shots that are hard to make.

  2. My team’s 20 year old point guard didn’t have a good pre season game? That’s it, I’ve seen enough. We must tear everything down to the studs again.

     /s

Just to clarify, scoots gonna be fine.

  3. Granted this is preseason so it’s not like the Clippers are going to really be trying on defense, but he seems like he can get to his spots really well but the decision making isn’t there. It’s not great that at the start of year 2 he still needs to work on his decision making and doesn’t look like he has made progress with his 3 point shooting, but he is so fluid and quick with a really stout frame that there is still a lot to like there.

He has all the physical tools to be a Deron Williams, rich man’s Mike Conley, or a poor man’s Chris Paul. He probably won’t be a franchise player like Dame, but he certainly can be a good-great point guard. For this season, I am more concerned with Shaedon Sharpe’s growth than I am with Scoot. But I will be panicking if he has a similar highlight package next year.

  4. You guys serious? 1 preseason game his 2nd year and this level of doomsday shit is embarrassing.

  5. He needs to balance his body more on some of those jumpshots.

Then, he needs to angle his body correctly when attacking. Easier said than done, sure, but it’s not just about speeding to the rim. Speeding gets you there, angling and contorting your body is how you finish.

It’s why Roy was so good at that and why Dame suddenly improved dramatically at finishing to the point where he became a 27ppg superstar the moment he became proficient at it. Scoot is either moving too fast for his brain to process what he needs to adjust to or he’s not thinking about it at all.

  6. If he’s not showing signs of improvement by ASB, he’s definitely on bust watchlist.

We will know for sure in 3-5 years

  7. The 3s weren’t missing too badly. I’m not worried about that. If he doesn’t shoot and prove he can make open 3s, he’ll never have space to penetrate, as defenders will sag 6 feet off of him.

It’s the poor touch around the rim that is concerning.

  8. Scoot does the best when he lets the game come to him – we saw that last year. I don’t think Chauncey’s offensive system (lack thereof) is conducive to helping Scoot grow his game or put him into a position to succeed.

  9. it looks like every time he does a cross over into a jumper, it’s a guaranteed miss. Maybe the coaches should encourage him to stop, since he doesn’t seem to gain any advantage from it.

  10. We are 1 preseason game in, holy shit find some hobbies. When he’s doing this halfway thru the season then I’ll maybe be a little worried.

  11. Not the game we all wanted… but in ready to live or die by him this season. Let’s figure out what we have and give him every chance to improve so that by the end of the year we’ve got a starting PG or a clear shot at a top prospect in next year’s draft (hopefully both?!).

  12. He looks really slow for someone advertised as an athlete. Even Dame plays way faster on his drives, and Dame isn’t known for his explosiveness.

  13. 0 for 4 on the tween tween step back. Not in his arsenal yet. Another 1 for 5 against Kai Jones at the rim. Kai is a great athlete and probably a top rim protector if nothing else. Scoot needs to figure out what he’s doing against elite rim protectors. The first attempt was all he converted with the speed advantage. When Kai had to make a decision on stepping up on Scoot is where we saw conversions. when he was dropped back, Scoot couldn’t figure it out

He’s got a little too much greenlight on the pull ups and still figuring out what he’s going to at the rim

If I were Chauncey I’d try to keep him around 10 fga per game come regular season. Speed and leverage to the rim with a smooth pullup is going to be his calling card, he’s just got to keep getting better

  14. There were some bad shots in there, and some good shots that didn’t fall.

Contested step back 3, not good Bob.

Seeing a lane and converting at the rim, don’t care how he finished it.

Contested drive, and an out of control lob/shot toss at the rim, no good.

Working off the FT line, OK. That attempt was not.

Fumbling off the hand off and missing the lane was where that went wrong. Shouldn’t have taken the time, and the shot.

Defender giving space, and working off the FT for a conversion, good.

That is statistically the worst thing you can do offensively in the NBA. That was another one that shouldn’t have happened.

Working the screen for space, good. Shot hit the rim, POR had a chance for a rebound. You would have more confidence in Ant hitting that, but that’s an NBA offense shot.

Working the PNR down, initiating the contact from your strong side, OK. The big was there to rebound, NBA play.

That’s an open spot up 3. Still on the rim, and Duop got the board. Good shot.

He pizza’d when he should have french fried. Had an open shooter for the option. The defense gave him the gap, and he took it. You would hope for a dunk / getting all the way under the rim so it doesn’t get blocked.

DHO through the gap with focused intent. Great offense, great shot.

Absolutely wide open 3, you have to take it. The shot looks good when it falls in rhythm. 🙂

Short clock… Maybe the outlet could have made it, but he hadn’t gathered that until he was almost out of bounds. Someone has to hold the hand grenade, and take one for the team.

Totally forced, out of control, no clear advantage, plenty of time on the clock. No bueno.

Working the screen for the open shot, drew rim, POR had a chance at the rebound.

So like 4 “bad” shots, 8 “good” shots, and 4 somewhere in-between.

  15. I’m actually not bothered by much here. Pre season is when you want him forcing the issue and taking a lot of shots

Kai Jones made it difficult for him because dude just takes off when you put the ball up, the severe lack of shooters meant the paint was super clogged and he was trying to break through and finish passed multiple defenders not just his own man, and there were only a few shots that made me feel eugh which comes with the territory of my first 2 points

Overall, get Deni in there as a secondary playmaker and release valve for Scoot to dump to, get Simons to draw defenders towards the perimeter and let Scoot get full heads of steam 1on1, and get him playing a majority of his minutes with DC to give him actual screens.

I’m not saying Scoot has all NBA in his future, but let’s put a 20yo in a position to show his true skill set and get his confidence going. Basketball is a mental sport, and playing with your hands tied behind your back early is a recipe for hurt development. He’s in a position where nearly every decision he could make is going to be bad in some way, when he drives the D can collapse without worrying about Kris and Rupes on the wings much, when he passes it’s because the lane is clogged and now it’s out of traffic, when he’s shooting it’s because no one else can create, and when he’s iso-ing it’s because hes getting ghost screens from everyone not named Donovan (as of last game)

Banton is our only other “creator” right now and he thought he was prime Paul George in the half court this game.

All this said, it was a close game against a team of pretty savvy veterans, Clips may not be good this year, but they’re still vastly better than we are and we were without arguably the 2-3 best players on the roster
