Scottsdale picked up the much needed win with a great combined pitching performance, but the Giants offense finally picked up its first home run of the fall…though it’s not from who you think. Also, a rehabbing hopeful soon-to-be Dodger Beater from the Mets, and the return of a Top 50 overall prospect who has missed two full seasons of baseball.
AFL: Scottsdale 10, Glendale 2
Giants Prospects to Spotlight:
- 3B Charlie Szykowny: 1-4, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 HR (1) – Szykowny picked up the first home run from the Giants contingent, having gone 1-for-4 in each of his two games so far. Szykowny had
- DH Bryce Eldridge: 1-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K – A bit of a better game for Eldridge, collecting his first walk, though he’s still seeking his first big hit. He’s 3-for-16 (.188) with a double, but with seven strikeouts to one walk
- C Drew Cavanaugh: 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 2B (1), 1 K – Cavanaugh made his first game in the fall, picking up a double. He played just 47 games in the regular season, mostly at Low-A San Jose where he hit .230, but also had nine impressive Triple-A games, where he was 9-for-30 (.300).
- RP Tyler Vogel: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K – Also making his fall debut was Vogel, part of a fine effort by the Scottsdale pitching staff. Vogel pitched 15 games in Eugene, where he had a 4.74 ERA and 22 strikeouts to 12 walks in 24.2 innings.
Top Scottsdale Rehabbing Player Lines:
- RF Jeff McNeil: 1-5, 1 R, 1 RBI – McNeil is hoping to get back onto the NLCS roster to try and beat the Dodgers, but it’s unclear if the Mets are ready to activate him.

- 1B Josue Briceño (DET, #9 Team): 3-4, 3 R, 5 RBI, 3 HR (3) – Wow.

Definitely looking like Bryce needs to start in AA once the season kicks off and move from there. I have confidence he will pick it up, but he’s probably exhausted from the workload of a very long season for him.
