This was absolutely beautiful

The Columbus Blue Jackets had their home opener and had a totally beautiful honor for Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau.

  1. Calgary’s tribute was beautiful.

Did you see the insane amount of the tributes left for him on the steps of the Saddledome, and all the chalk drawings and messages? I don’t know if the NHL has ever physically seen the sheer amount and level of support for a player that’s died, let alone been tragically killed at such an early age. Columbus can have their tribute and mourning at the loss of a player, but he was, and will forever and always be a Flame. We scouted him, we drafted him, we developed him, we turned him into the star player he was destined to be, and he was the star player of our team for almost the entirety of his career before he made the difficult decision to move closer to home a couple years ago. Nobody has meant more to this city since Iggy left and Kipper hung up the skates in 2013. For me it means even more, because I was at that last home game in March before Iggy left to Pittsburg and Kipper went back to Finland at the end of the season. I was a fan through that whole era, and I was there when it ended. Johnny Hockey has been the most beloved player since, and by far. The Johnny/Monny/Lindy Purple Gatorade line, the #1 Best-In-League Johnny/Chucky, Lindy line. Him being there to see us through Gio’s departure, who was the longest tenured Flame and our Captain and the only player still playing from the very beginning of the post-2004 cup victory. There simply hasn’t been a bigger name than Johnny’s in this city since 2013. He meant the world to us, and while Columbus is mourning him now, we’d already been mourning him for the last two years. This only adds to the pain we already had. A horrible thing to loom over us to start this season.

  2. I was in absolute tears, we lost my little brother the baby of our family late august so I couldn’t help but feel what the family is going through.. grief is forever. Reach out to your family every day and tell them you love them.

  3. Idk if anyone knows but monahan and Bennett were both on a line with Jonny when they played for the flames. Monahan to Bennett to gaudreau one last time 😢 fly high #13🕊️🕊️

  4. if u decide to drink and drive ur a loser just walk home take a cab uber i dont know sleep outside just dont drive you dont just put your self at risk you put others RIP gaudreau brother

  5. I feel uncomfortable about the CBJ's being credited for honoring JG when they probably still sold alcohol at the game and there's a non-zero chance someone drove home drunk. Maybe have a dry game or offer free taxis/Ubers to anyone who asks to prevent drunk driving would have been a good thing. People should never drive drunk but if we really want to prevent a loss like JG again (or anyone for that matter) we need to make it so even a drunk person realizes the easiest choice is not to drive.

  6. so much respect. Such a great tribute. I just saw them recap it when i was watching the Oilers but still brought a tear to my eye when they watched the puck as it dropped

  7. City clickers will never understand the dilemma of having to walk 12 km back home or drive drunk. In rural areas drunk driving has become normalized by many, not saying its good, but some people dont have a choice but to drive home.

  8. Drunk drivers are the scourge of our society. The truly deplorable and dispecable. And we're at epidemic levels with feather light punishments for the offenders. Makes me sick. Our country deserves waaayyyy better.
Saying the Gaudreau brothers will be missed is a massive understatement 😢
