The Rockets Have Made A STRANGE Decision…

The Houston Rockets have MASSIVE expectations this season – a real playoff contender, an incredibly deep team, and a ton of young talent.

But there was this huge cloud hanging over the team, related to that young talent.

2 of the best players on the team – Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun, were 2025 restricted free agents and while a ton of other guys from their draft class: Cade Cunningham, Evan Mobley, Scottie Barnes, Franz Wagner… had all signed massive extensions – the Rockets had not yet locked up 2 key pieces to the future of their team.

Until now… Sengun is still a free agent but Green is not, signing an extremely unique 3 year, $106 million extension to stay in Houston.

Now when I say unique, what I mean is, we have never seen a contract like this… in the history of the league.

  1. Fuck the Rockets I pray that Jalen does his 2 years and then opts out and give the Rockets the finger . If really thinks that Shepard is replacing Green good he’s absolutely not on that level and will pay dearly in 2 years .

  2. I believe that Sengun is the reason why it went down like this. He probably wouldn't have accepted anything less and he wanted the contract now. He wanted certainty over a potentially great future team meanwhile the team wanted to lock him down.

  3. Let's say Green and Sengun have an amazing season. Then the Rockets have to choose between the 2. And it comes out later that they could've done this. You'd be on their heads talking about how idiotic it was not getting these deals done earlier. Thank God you're not a GM smh.
P.S. love the content my guy

  4. Rockets have insane dept already. They have at least 4-5 good young guys that can be great role players. Jabari Smith-Whitmore-Reed-Amen Thompson. On top of that they have Steven Adams and Brooks as solid veteran role players. And obviously, they have 2 potential super-stars with Green and Sengun. Even if only 1 of them becomes a super star, that's all they need. So they really don't need any free agents.

And don't forget, Sengun' conract is gonna be a top 10 contract in the league in 2 years. So Rockets def made the right move by signing him now, he would've gotten the max had they waited.

  5. As a rockets fan I’ll give you my thoughts on the contract extensions.

With Jalen Green with him he pretty much betting on himself. If he goes out there and lives up to his potential after a few years he can hit free agency and get that super max contract. But during this contract he gets his money and he doesn’t have to worry about hitting restricted free agency.

As for the rockets side Jalen Green has not deserved the max. Most Rockets fan know how inconsistent he has been the first three years of his career and it didn’t help he had a god awful coach in Slias his first two years and our organization was a dumpster fire during that time.

Regardless of Jalen inconsistency the rockets still believe in his high upside. So they want to see if Jalen can be that guy he was at the end of the season consistently.

If not then it’s no biggy the rockets can just use Jalen contract as a trade piece for a star level player not to mention we still have the Suns and some of the Nets picks left over.

For Sengun flat out plain and simple he deserved the max he had a great year last year and he going to get a monster year this year. The rockets definitely view Sengun as a long term piece but I guess they wanted some cap relief since they didn’t give Sengun the full max.

To come to the middle ground Sengun wanted to add the player option to his deal which is a risk on the rockets since he would be a free agency in 2029 meaning he going to be in the class with Ant, Tyrese Maxey and Halliburton and Quickley. Thats a good free agent class and if Sengun plays up to his potential multiple teams will definitely be after him.

Regardless Sengun deserves it and we basically locked him up for five years and Jalen basically for two more years.

With these deals it basically sets us up for possibly keeping the rest of our core together. So the future is very bright in H-Town

  6. We have to give praise to players like lebron creating the blueprint on leveraging your skills to get the contract that you want even if your not as skilled

  7. Just a couple of things, Jalens cap hold next year was actually higher than what his new cap figure is so we actually cleared a few million doing this, and with Sengun if we let him go to RFA he was 100% gonna get offered a max. Most people agreed it only made sense to sign Sengun early if you were getting him under the max, which we got him about 8m per year under the max.

  8. I am not sure why you are buidling that level of expectations for the rockets, it is just unrealistic. The West is absolutely stacked and sneaking into the play-in would be a huge success for the Rockets, more than that is very unlikely.
Sengun has a lot of potential, sure, but i am very low on Green, even though the contract makes him at least not completely untradeable. Green did absolutely nothing to deserve a max extension, lets be honest, apart from a few little stretches he was a really bad player for most of his NBA career so far.
Houston is still a few years away with this core, i think they have absolutely no shot to make a significant run in the west, i see a play-in loss as their ceiling.

  9. So you expect the Rockets to be able to sign Jalen. Then keep Alperen unsigned. Then sign a from what it seems like a max free agent. Then resign players like Eason, Jabari, Whitmore, Thompson, and Sheppard? Your logic makes no sense. You can't do all of these things. The Rockets clearly showed that they want to try to keep the team together and give these young guys a chance. If you want to pivot you can package a few and like 5 1st round picks and a swap to get a top 20 player in the NBA.

  10. Rockets made a smart move by signing Sengun and Green this off-season. Almost certainly, one of the two will command a Max deal by next year. This locks them in on a lesser deal for a few years. The Max is only going to increase so even if these signings seemed high now (and they don't), in a couple years they will age very well.

  11. I’m not sure that I’d have signed that contract if I’m Sengun. He’s arguably already worth like $45m a season, and I expect him to have his best season this year. In the long run he loses money. Unless he secretly decided he doesn’t like basketball anymore 🤷‍♂️

  12. Do you think they jumped the gun because they wanted to test their compatibility one more time until they try to trade on of them in the future?? Or maybe (On Green’s side of this) this gives him a possible team/player friendly contract that can attract possible trade partners if things don’t go the Rockets way??

  13. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Rockets might considered holding off on those contracts extensions to give them more flexibility, saw the chemistry issues rising combined with a weak upcoming free agent class, and got cold feet

  14. Max contracts should be for all star players. All of these lottery range rookies getting paid max contract extensions by default is going to create a lot of mediocre teams. Teams are going to be stuck with no cap space to improve, and stuck with guys who are borderline bench players on an all star team, who are also getting paid like they are franchise players. Can't trade them because nobody wants to pick up your bad contracts. Can't win with them because they are not good enough, can't improve because you have no cap space to do anything meaningful in free agency, and are not bad enough to get a high lottery pick.

  15. Houston is under relatively new ownership. The owner has only had this team for like the last 5 years. Players might not view Houston as a prime landing spot in free agency. The owner, might not perceive his market as a prime landing spot in free agency. So having a massive cap slot for free agency isn't as valuable for Houston, as it would be for LA, San Francisco, New York, or Boston. IDK who is up for free agency in 2025, but there might not be a whole lot of high quality free agents around. Houston had a ton of money last summer and over paid Fred Van Vleet. So even with the team looking to over pay, Free Van Vleet was the best player that they could land. Plus players and GM's kind of already know who is looking to move, and who is looking to stay beforehand. Houston may already know, that X amount of high quality guys will be out there, but maybe none of them are interested in going to Houston. Then you have to consider that Houston has a deep team with a lot of talent. They are in a bit of a similar situation as OKC. They might just like what they have. Why not take a chance with what you've got, over letting it go to maybe have a chance at someone else in a year?

This team was bought for 2.2 billion dollars on the heels of the NBA's new TV deal which upped the value of teams. But did it really? There's actual value and then there is perceived value. The value of this deal hinged upon the collective bargaining agreement assuring that there wouldn't be a work stoppage. The teams got a nice chunk of change from that deal. But it didn't extend the size of arenas. The same amount of butts in seats and revenue from those butts is being generated. Houston isn't a huge market, the owner just paid a ton of money, and has been holding a lottery team for the last 2 years. That owner is probably being VERY cautious with his expenditures and I will be shocked if we see this team going far beyond the soft cap for it's payroll.
