Is This Free Agency Juan Soto or Bust for the New York Mets?

Explore the high-stakes world of MLB free agency as the New York Mets eye Juan Soto, a 26-year-old future Hall of Famer.

With Soto’s unmatched plate discipline and power, the Mets face a pivotal decision: can they afford to let this opportunity slip away?

Host Ryan Finkelstein breaks down the Mets’ strategy, comparing Soto’s potential impact to Bryce Harper’s transformative role with the Phillies.

The episode also examines the financial dynamics of signing Soto, including comparisons to Shohei Ohtani’s record-breaking contract. Will the Mets outbid rivals like the Yankees and Dodgers for Soto’s signature?

  1. Good morning Ryan-I agree with your premises and signing soto to a deal Let’s see if uncle Steve is going to open the pocketbook to get them. I still would also sign Pete to a long-term deal and go after Corbin Burns.

  2. I think we should Moneyball this. We should build Soto across 2-4 players. I don't like the sound of building around someone that can hit and has poor defense. And then there's the inevitable what do we do if he has a season ending injury. We can still afford to overpay on a shorter contract and crank out a quality team.

  3. Hey Ryan, I love the content, but i do have one major problem…..the flag! It's kinda a desecration of the American flag….. offensive to many who fought and died for it. Just replace it with another mets flag, especially with Veterans Day coming up.
    Keep up the great reporting

  4. doesn't Snell have the right to opt out and become a free agent? If Severino, Manaea and Quintana walk, there is no pitching left – starting pitching is their biggest issue

  5. The Mets were blown out the games the loss to the Dodgers. If they sign Soto they might meet up with the Dodgers again and the results won't change much. I guess they Mets are just desperate in trying to get Soto. Desperate teams won't end well for those teams. Just look at the Browns in getting Deshaun Watson.

  6. I get what you are saying …..however having a lot of cash does not necessarily equal success ……I’d suggest it’s better to put in place a solid core ….not build on one player, what if he gets banged up? Ohtani as well as pitching he could hit! …….just saying

  7. Why paid over 500Millions for Juan Soto when Kike Hernandez got 9 post season, 4 world Series and 2 time champion, 2 time run up in WBC, with only 9 years in MLB. Teoscar Hernandez is another good asset for the Mets

  8. It does somewhat strike me that how you presented that you are absolutely petrified that Soto will go to the Dodgers! …..understandable for sure ….. however I’ll again say having the money doesn’t mean go shell it out ….. I said to someone else what happens if he gets banged up? Is the cash going to be there to go get some one to set in? Indeed if you don’t get a good pitching rotation up and running …..Soto isn’t going to win you the WS!
I’d be looking elsewhere and putting my faith in Sterns …..let him do his thing!

Money helps but it is not a sure fire guarantee of winning!

  9. Would love to get Soto just got to get over the bad defense and anitmated antics but that just me. $700 K is long term commitment for a team that switched gears, gladly , in 2023

  10. The fact that $600M for a one way player (not a good fielder) is a bit disconcerting. I hope the Mets don't go that far "all the way" into signing him.

  11. As Cher's character, in the movie, Moonstruck, said, "Snap out of it." Think how much your own life evolved from 14 years ago. For any player, injuries are bound to happen, especially with the profuse use of steroid injections for a quick "fix" that is damaging to the body. No player is worth $700M or an organization being tied to a player for 14 years! (PS: Can you stop promoting Bret Baty!!! Unless he's part of a trade package, I don't want to hear his name! He hasn't proved himself in three seasons. In baseball, three strikes, and you are OUT! When I think of the number of wins we could have had if Vientos was placed at third base earlier in the season.) We need pitching! 🤦‍♀️

  12. Let Pete go. Sign Christian Walker for 2 years maybe 2 plus an option if that's what it takes. Would improve the defense and still have a 250ish hitter with 25-30 HR power. If Vlad jr go free agency next year, go after him. He is a few years younger that Pete and a much bettter hitter. Could be DH and 1B. Marte is off the books by then. If needed Walker is DH and 1B along with Vlad. If Vlad signs elsewhere still have Walker or maybe one of the kids is ready to shine and move Vientos to 1B. The bottom line is there are lots of real good opportunities if Pete goes. I love Pete but I am concerned that his contract will not age well while wouldn't be locked into Walker long term.
