Miami Heat: Where is the Bam we were promised? | Five on the Floor
It’s early in the season, but Bam Adebayo’s struggle has been noticeable. Why does Bam look so disengaged, specifically on the offensive end? And can it be turned around quickly, with the current players around him? Ethan Skolnick and Greg Sylvander discuss the start, and the options.

I respect this pod, but Bam is his own worst enemy when it comes to the offense. Bam will have the ball on top of the key with an open shot and pass it up for a dribble handoff or wait for someone to come over to him. He's not even making quick moves when he has a one-on-one play. There’s no reason why he isn't beating someone off the dribble or outmuscling some of these dudes. Teammates have to do a little better, but I put Bam's bad start on him and Spo. (listened to the pod)
They’re going to swap Jovic for Highsmith as the starting 4 and thats not going to work either
Until the Heat move off of Jimmy and Small ball the Heat will go nowhere.
I believe Bam's purposely not playing well because he doesn't want to get traded. Tyler did the same thing against the Celtics last year. He had a great game and then trade rumors started flying and then he started playing badly again.
LETS GO
Jimmy's decline started last year. The organization knows it and the tell is the fact that offensive focal point has changed from Jimmy to Tyler. Jimmy at 35 just can't do it. The expectation, though, was that Bam would at least remain consistent and through 4 games in he has not. Had they gotten Bam type performance the last 4 games, they could have easily been 4-0.
The real elephant in the room is, what happens come playoff time? You can't give Tyler the keys for 82 games, then come playoff time tell him to slide over to the passenger seat so Jimmy can drive.
This is why I believe the first half of the season is vital for several players. two of the core players could be gone by the trading deadline.
Jimmy is not a $50m player. Need to move on from him. All the other conversation topics and line up tweaks won’t do a thing.
Bam reached his ceiling like two years ago, he’s a great defender that scores sometimes , he’s not a 1. H e can’t carry a team. But he does carry the defense without him we would be lost but offensively he’s not that guy.
Bottom line is we dont have the talent. We need to trade Jimmy and continue adding to our young core.
When are these guys finally going to admit that Bam is a 4th option, maybe a 3rd at best. Wasted Jimmy's years, he almost took us to 3 finals with a bunch of undrafted players.
I really like Bam, but if you've seen the game or the replay, he was DOMINATED by Towns. Towns went by him, he muscled him and shot over him. Every way possible, Bam got dominated on DEFENSE. Not good. (Butler just looked disengaged)
I understand what’s going on with Bam, he’s Bam. He’s a role player with no true offensive skill set. This new offense requires more of an offensive skill set. And by the way didn’t A. Davis play in the Olympics and he’s off to an MVP START Oh but I forgot AD have SKILLS!!!!!
Tyler is taking one less FGA than last season. Terry takes 2 less shots than that. Blaming it on them is ridiculous. Spo wanted to not have a bottom offense so he realized they need to move away from middies. Bam is terrified of shooting anything that’s not a middie so he’s shrunk. That’s it. When Spo said they need Bam to be comfortable he was basically conceding defeat on having an efficient, spaced offense and saying Bam can go back to being an inefficient chucker of middies.
Me: 95% of the season to figure this out.
Also me: they look mid again😔 literally the worse place to be.
There is no excuse, not even w/the emergence of Rozier & Herro backcourt tandem, for the alleged mediocre performance of Bam, of late. If Bam
wants
to be the torchbearer of the team & the organization, he’s gotta be all-in and try to be in-sync w/his teammates. & the performers like, it’s gonna rub off on him. The Heat found a winning formula in its backcourt, Will the others follow suit? And you say, there is another problem? I just don’t understand.
DWade was the main man of the Heat , & it is evident in his game. He plays the part. Do you say,
whatever is comfortable for a certain player so as to bring out the best in him. You thrive in adversity, you don’t want it to be easy. When you’re called in to play, you give it your all &
do what is needed from you. Why put Tyler in a bad light? inspite of ? You feel so frustrated w/the players, go easy on them a bit. See rhe goodness in someone,
w/c will come out of him, eventually.
Lighten up.
Pat Riley, Andy Elisberg and Micky Arison wasted the last 5 years. It’s sad
I understand what’s going on with Bam, he’s Bam. He’s a role player with no true offensive skill set. This new offense requires more of an offensive skill set. And by the way didn’t A. Davis play in the Olympics and he’s off to an MVP START Oh but AD have SKILLS!!!!
Greg you should not be permitted to speak on Bam. Your blind love for him has divorced you from all LOGIC.
Heat wasted Jimmy’s last prime years. He more than exceeded his expectations and every chance they had to get him help they decided to trust in Herro and bam who are not going to lead the Heat anywhere post-Jimmy era. Plenty of teams with better young players than them.
Why can't they just **TRY** moving Terry to the bench and replacing him with Haywood? They keep Niko and his size/spacing next to Bam plus add a plus defender to the starting unit. Tyler can still get his too. Maybe it blows up in their face but what's the harm in seeing what this looks like?
Its very simple…u guys overated Bam…he never been that guy
KP is better…and more impactful…this was the case last year too
I’d rather have an unready Ware than a ready Thomas Bryant. Just sub him in ffs holy shit
I feel like Bam is mentally weak or something. They always have to hold his hand and make sure his confidence is okay
Terry needs to be 6th man. This is blasphemy but… start Dru. Let the other 4 starters initiate, if Dru can hit the 3 consistently it’ll work
Yes not sure we want Tyler to be the Devin Booker of this team , what has Phoenix done in the last few years even with KD and Beal, l remember the 60 point game Booker had last year and Phoenix still lost the game , have we forgotten the Boston playoffs already Tyler had one good game , geez, he has changed his game , not making excuses for Jimmy but when he is in the corner he has his hands out for the ball doesn't get it , Terry tends to dribble a bit too much just my opinion, Jimmy at the 2 maybe
I feel like Tyler and Terry are the only ones who aren’t afraid to constantly try to go get a bucket and be semi efficient with that. Jimmy has lulls where he looks disengaged and doesn’t do as well anymore against the bigger and more physical teams and them bam just goes through slumps where he can’t hit water if he fell out of a boat. Even point blank hooks and bunnies he misses a lot
How bout jimmy 6th man. Like dwade. He plays good with bench guys. He can slow down the game to his stood too
I wonder is Spo has banned the mid range shot?
Speed
It starts with usage. Bam needs to 1. be highlighted on offense and 2. be more assertive. The 2nd one has been an issue his whole career, so more realistically, the offense needs to flow through him, and it'll take Spo being intentional about that.
