lets talk about elias pettersson
Elias Pettersson of the Vancouver Canucks has been abysmal offensively over the past 8 months, with a lot of fans beginning to lose patience with Petey’s play. So in this video, I wanted to go deeper and look at some of the underlying metrics to figure out what’s really going on.

Video decent bro but turn down the background music in relation to the narration, shits too loud and drowns out your talking.
His ceiling is a 120 pt two way monster and bozo fans want him traded.
Pettersson's needs to grow a stone and stop playing like a Swedish punk.
Louise Erickson #2…. trade him
This year is kind of feeling a little weird… I say just stick to the mid, make the playoffs… not overthink anything else. Rebound next year with a vengeance.
Anyone remember how ownership and the media essentially forced him to sign early when he wanted to wait till the end of the year?
I remember ownership suggesting they might trade him.
That’s prolly what led to him playing so bad
I just want the old Petey back. This career slump really sucks. I'm such a big fan of his. But to be fair to him, the whole team is playing poorly lately.
if he thinks he's being paid too much refund some of it. he makes $7000 per minute on the ice if he can't live up to the expectations he needs to take a cut in pay or move on
The one thing that makes sense is that he’s just mentally fragile and it’s all become too much. Contract, media, injury, pressure, nhl quality physicality, opposition figuring him out, confidence. It’s a lot to push through and it’s starting to look like he can’t.
Also key to remember that there was talks about him being traded to Carolina before he signed that contract. Management seemed to say hey we want you to sign or you could be traded. Could also play a factor mentally.
He got the bag. Time to retire to waterfront mansion in Sweden.
There's 92 million reasons why he's struggling.
It’s not a contract issue it’s a coaching issue. He also doesn’t vibe with JT. I’d be pissed too if I had to play with Bains or Mikheyev… I say put the lotto line back and then go from there
its tocchets system
Something is wrong
Apologies if the background music is a little bit too loud! It felt okay when I was editing with my headphones on but now that I've heard it without headphones it does feel too loud. Will fix for the next video!
I really just think his confidence is shot. He doesn't smile anymore either. I think he's just mentally not there anymore, his body language has been really bad and you can tell he's not who he was. He's scared to hold the puck, he seems to pass it off as quickly as he can. Likely cause physically he'd get worked over by a 14 year old. I am amazed that this guy hasn't bulked up. With his height, his frame could very easily handle 200 pounds and he'd be an absolute force out there. But even at like 185-190 at least he could handle light shoves more than he currently does. A couple games ago, I swear, he got shoved over 3 times in the span of 5 seconds. I have to imagine he plays with that in the back of his mind. Knowing the lightest shove is gonna topple him over. So he passes the puck off as soon as possible.
We've been talking about him being injured for months now. If he was, they would have just sat him. Team has no problems resting players. They did it with Cole and Lindholm late last year. I am sure our budding superstar player would also have been given games off. Miller touched the ice ONCE in preseason cause he had something nagging. So I am of the mindset he's physically healthy. Unless for some reason he's the one player the coaching staff just won't allow extra rest. Which would be really weird.
bullshit video – its most likely tendonitis and its fucking up everything from his skating and shooting ability
Gimme a break more like the most over-rated and over-paid canucks to ever play for that team. That contract is going to rival Erriksson's contract ( Hmmmm, another overpaid swede)
Trade him fast
Get some young blood.
Move him
They should have moved the sundeins long ago.The twins aren't doing anything, the game is 10 years ahead.
Love how data driven this video is! Makes sense that this is mental and physical when you compare the year over year
I honestly think a trip to players assistance program to work through his mental state wouldn’t be the end of the world. He’s gotta work out what Evers going on with professionals away from the media the team the everything. Laine did it last year, if that’s what it takes to get petey back I’m all for it. But 8 years of a scared petey with no confidence is going to kill any chance at a cup goodbye.
well here we go again! Same crappy talk from Fans as with W Nylander. Trade him i dare you! Tha would bite you in he ass next season or so.
I remember his play dropped off before he signed his contract. In fact, it felt like the reason for the timing of the signing. Like the management was taking advantage of his poor play and signed him for what, at the time, seemed like a good deal. Perhaps it’s just another curse in what seems to be a long legacy of curses for this franchise..
Nothing got to do with metrics, its his head. He looks morbidly depressed all the time, when we win, when we score, when he scores.
Yips
Great. Another overpaid elite pp defensive specialist.
I hope Petey can turn it around. Watching him play when he is at his best is a joy
he's still a good playmaker & if he scores 100 points all assists? good enough – just get him linemates that he clicks with (he'll set 'em up, they'll knock it down
Overpriced…
I think the supposed "fans" think more about his contract than EP40 does. And I dont think, I KNOW, those same "fans" care more about the money than he does.
I’m honestly getting tired of young players getting long term high and contracts
They need a limit on how much a player below 25 can sign for 5-8 million or something because you can’t build teams anymore with these greedy contracts
Very overrated hockey player.
Great anlasis. People underate his improvment in his defensive play. He needs to shoot the puck. Get that killer instinct back. Hes definitely trying out there. I think patience for now is the call. If he can tie in both sides of his game and gel with the right players i think his confidence will come back.
Welll, the Canucks just got rid of the terrible Louis Eriksson contract so it seemed perfect timing to sign another Millstone contract… 11.6 million a year?!? Really??
If he would be injured Toccet would have put him on LTIR
The skill is all there – but the character might be on par with that skill and many times big money overwhelms the little character that was there in the first place. Spoiled players don't have the urgency to work hard since they were told over the years that they are the best – the new contract merely confirmed his own bias.
Some good points in this video but also some inaccuracy. EP's slump began at least a month before he signed the contract on Mar. 3. After 14 goals, 7 assists in Jan, he had 2 G, 9 A in Feb. The slump was, and is, due to an injury he suffered in Jan. That part you got right, for sure. There's no evidence that the pressure of the big contract has anything to do with it.
Trade him off
this player is not a canuck in 12 months, there is no way. in a market like vancouver, a slump like this will ruin all ties with the fanbase, media and frontoffice, its just easier to trade him. and i think lots of teams will take a chance despite the 11 million dollar contract. vancouver should be happy the "upside" will make him tradeable without retaining salary.
Would you trade Petterson and Hughes for mcdavid? Asking all Canuck fans. Edit: I also think it's his injury, this year I think he hits 115 points 2 goals and 113 assists.
He is made for life now, he dont have to try no more. Thats the mentality of these guys these days.
It's not that uncommon for players to have a few good seasons then fall off
He's nicknamed the alien because of his neck
Petterson is about as reliable as a 84 Yugo!!
