We wonder if the Cubs truly know what their problems are as The Athletic reported they will be relying more on analytics than the human element. Plus: Ian Happ wins the Gold Glove and roster moves.

  1. I now have zero faith in Hoyer. You can use analytics as a method of vetting a player, If all that matters is analytics then go acquire Trevor Bauer. Alex Anthopoulos The GM for Atlanta Braves was interviewed and discussed how character and human qualities are a big factor in the players they acquire. Using one tool like analytics is like saying all I need to repair something is using my channel locks. It's a great tool for a lot of things but it's not the right tool for everything.

  2. This team is cheap, seems incompetent, who's ran by billionaires who only care about money and the cubs brand, this why this team will remain average.

  3. Stop scouting AAA ? Busch came from a competitive AAA team. They had to scout him. Without AAA scouting, we’d still need a 1B.

  4. This is suddenly coming out because Jed is really feeling the heat from the fans and he's trying to deflect blame onto his lieutenant. At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter how they scout, just win games!

  5. Congrats to Happ. He has worked on his craft and while not exceptional he is very good and apparently better than the competition. As a hitter, he can go into some funks but he does work a lot of walks.

  6. Aka we’re going to use analytics to find little things wrong with big contract players and use it as an excuse not to sign them. I’m guessing Jed is just counting down his days until he returns to the red sox with Theo.

  7. If we are going strictly by analytics and models we can use AI to build our roster and get rid of Jed and his mini-me.
The Dodgers, Yankees and Mets spent money on the top players, it didn't take analytics to see that and to compete for a World Series.

  8. Hoyer is listening to Hawkins and now wants to reduce scouts and go more heavily into analytics. Whyt? Clearly, this is the first sign of Hoyer's desperation to keep his job. What's next? Bad FA signings? Bad trades? Cub fans, beware of The Ides of March…….

  9. Great job on the gold gloves Sam! I'm not an expert but analytics surely can only take you so far even same between seasons it can vary massively according to ball park, change of age, injuries maybe all baseball will be played by AI soon. I think the cubs need a leader Happ seems a great guy I'm not sure he is a true leader (maybe by example and the way he plays), nor Cody. I think they need a slugger (not sure how to get that in the lineup), a pitcher and a backup catcher plus the main thing better late innings bullpen guys. This does not take a computer to work out almost every cubs blog and post says so, I'm guessing Jed can work that out without a computer.

  10. Lol… nevermind the numbers a player actually does during the season….. not that difficult. Cubs problem is front office and management is the issue….. not the player skill. We have a great team full of skill and good numbers….its management thats the problem

  11. I almost get the feeling Jed is changing course simply to save his job. I don't believe he believes but he'll do anything to stay in charge. Sorry Jed, you've made this team below average with a bloated salary base. His poor evaluation of players and what appears to be an even poorer FO staff surrounding him. Maybe Ricketts is meddling but my goodness has he taken this team in the wrong direction.

  12. This team needs a power bat in the middle of this lineup. Alonso,Soto, Schwaber will make everyone in lineup a better hitter. It’s time for Ricketts to open his Wallet. Trade Happ or Suzuki. Let’s have a great off season. Wake up Hoyer. Winning the pennant and playing in the Series every year has to be our number 1 goal every Season. Nothing else should be Acceptable

  13. You aren’t a small market team when you are spending 230 million dollars a year and are valued as the 4th highest franchises in the MLB… Just stop Jed… You’re drunk… go home…

  14. That FO doesn’t get to spit out analytics when they spend 230 million dollars to go 83-79, blow 25 saves, and not add a closer…

It’s like sitting down with a guy who’s dying of cancer, and telling him to cheer up because it’s sunny outside…
