NEWS: The Cardinals are officially moving Willson Contreras to 1B/DH
The Cardinals are officially moving Willson Contreras to first base/DH in 2025 in a move that John Mozeliak has described to reporters at the GM Meetings as one that was mutually determined and is designed to keep Contreras where he wants to be — which is with the St. Louis Cardinals.
With national media weighing in, Brenden sat down to record immediately on Wednesday afternoon looking to set the record straight to describe his instant reaction to the Contreras news.

I think that's good news. I was hopeful they would keep him. First base should be good for him
So Herrera and Pages as catchers so what do you do with Baker
Hope Herrera work on his throwing out runners of 7% in 2024 if he can get to 20% would be great
Very interestingš®
Getting to be a bit overcrowded at first base
I'm a fan of this move at least they aren't moving him and totally quitting on next year's team.
Bernie did a breakdown on his offensive splits when catching vs DHā¦.heās a great bat behind the plateā¦.hes just a dude at DH. Doesnāt make any senseā¦..not when you have a gluten of young players that can take ABs at first. I hope this is a play for leverage in trade talks, that this isnāt their legitimate plan.
I hope this is incorrect because I thought the whole purpose of this "rebuild" with the Cardinals is to reduce large contracts.
What will be done with Burleson and Baker? Will they be traded to give them a chance to actually play everyday with another team or are they just gonna be sitting on the bench and basically dying on the Vine? I have said this before concerning Baker, how many home runs does he need to hit at triple-a to have earned a chance to play every day at the major league level, 4,000 home runs? Both will fill duties at first base and DH at a much lower rate financially.
This response totally smells of Mo.
The sooner Mo goes the better.
Contreras should have never been signed. Another Mo mistake.
The Cubs letting Contreras go was a BIG RED FLAG! But alas Mo.
Well that changes wƬn total
I'm waiting for Crooks..
I'm down he does hit well
Dude forgetting about Joe Mauer ROFL
I'm sorry, but this smacks of Edman to center last year. He'll be gone by trade deadline.
Welcome to 90-95 cards baseball
The front office mishandled this like many other deals lately. Now they can mishandle Burleson/Baker, too. He still throws out more runners than the other two. Hopefully, Crooks can be the future. If we're going with youth, he has to be traded. Keep your starters besides Mikolas/Matz. If you keep Contreras he needs to catch mainly.
this is dumb you need middle players, you got more corners than you need already
I'm glad he wants to stay. The move to first just makes good sense. I wasn't real crazy about the platoon idea anyhow.
Hmmmmmmm. Geez. I guess theyāre trying to keep him healthy, maybe, and Iām ASSUMING WillyC is cool with it.
IDK BSchaef, I was hoping theyād do Cardinal Way stuff, trying to do RUN PREVENTION & make it their mission to really clean up their defense.
Bloom 2026 canāt get here soon enough, 2025 looks like dogshit.
So we are āchangingā his position again.. okay.. but again imo we are log jammed everywhere..
Contreras Arenado and I assume Gray all no trade clause.. guess we will see.. I donāt have high hopes!
I agree, Willson has done everything theyāve asked him to do, even when it made no sense whatsoever. Dude deserves more respect
They should bag on the Cardinals and call out how inept they have been or the last few years. Until Moz is gone and the poison that surrounds him, we will remain the brunt of jokes. Hopefully the kids can get the correct voices in their ears and bring us out of this wasteland. Not Wilsonās fault. I admire his tenacity and hope he leads us to victory. Saw podcasts from Toronto/Seattle hoping they could get Arenado. Thinking the Yankees should be in the mix as well. Hopefully we can jettison him and his overpay.
I'm having flashbacks of the Moneyball movie. Specifically the scene where they tell Chris Pratt that they want him to play 1st base, even though he had only ever been a catcher.
Horrible move and waste of money. Should have put Burleson there and traded Contreras for a couple or prospects and dumped millions
OMG! Can we go back in time to when the Cardinals first signed Contreras please. There was tons of conversation speculating that Contreras would eventually move to 1st base or DH as his contract and tenure matured. This is all part of the original plan. The national sports media behaves more and more like the national political media every day……. always trying to create and focus on controversy……. even if they have to make it up.
Sounds like Contreras is 100% on board with the move to 1B.
