  1. 1st game back and Sharpe instantly reminds everyone of why he can be our franchises superstar if he stays healthy

  2. Here are my thoughts on this game:

    The positives:

    * Good tank loss. We were competitive, the game was watchable, and we lost to an unsustainably hot shooting night (to a team that is competing with us for the bottom of the standings). I’m pretty pleased with that outcome.

    * I thought this was the best Deni has looked all season. He was quick, decisive, and did a fantastic job as a secondary playmaker getting the ball where it needed to go. Plus he hit a couple jumpers, which is always good to see. I hope this is the last time he loses minutes to Banton.

    * Grant did a fantastic job battling Wemby for position all game long. He’s not normally the most physical guy, but I thought he did a great job being physical and pushing Wemby off his spots.

    * I thought the Ant + Ayton combo looked pretty good tonight. In general I thought Ant did a good job facilitating for 3.5 quarters, but he really needs to chill with the hero ball closing out games.

    * To his credit, Ayton was rolling pretty hard to the rim most of tonight, and he got rewarded for it. I’d like to see more of this kind of play from him going forward.

    * Awesome to see Sharpe play basketball again. He didn’t look rusty at all and his jumper looked pretty clean, which is a great sign. I also thought he made several really nice passes he wouldn’t have made last year, which was awesome to see.

    The negatives:

    * Rough game for Toumani: he got stuffed by Wemby at the rim twice, and I thought he had a few uncharacteristic mental lapses on defense. Definitely gonna be a game he’d like to forget.

    * Sucks that the Spurs couldn’t miss threes. I felt like our defense was pretty solid on a lot of those posessions, but they just couldn’t miss at all. Oh well, just one of those nights. Their bench shooting like 70% from three doesn’t help either.

    * I thought it wasn’t a very good decision to be pressuring the ball so aggressively in the early fourth quarter, when we had no center in the game. If you extend the defense so far pressuring the ball, you have to have a center behind you to clean up all the messes. If Toumani is pressuring the ball, if the guard goes by him then Scoot or Sharpe or Ant is never going to be able to make a play at the rim.

    * Speaking of which, I thought we lost the game with the small-ball lineup in the beginning of the fourth quarter when the spurs had in zach collins. that’s just not at all the time to go small (and if you WERE to go small I would have liked to see Deni who’s bigger and more physical than Banton). Just a really bad lineup there.

    * I thought Scoot had an up-and-down game. He continues to look pretty good getting to the rim, but what happens when he gets to the rim is an absolute adventure. I’m a little bit worried about his hands and general lack of touch – he blew two open layups and seems to create a turnover at least once a game by just dropping a routine pass. Tonight, he missed Sharpe cutting for a dunk because he just dropped a pass that came right to his hands, and then lost another one out of bounds in the backcourt. On the plus side, I thought he played solid on-ball defense, and like I mentioned he did a good job getting to the rim.

  3. Scoot seriously isn’t getting enough minutes, what’s the point of tanking if we’re not even investing minutes into them right now. It’s not like he’s playing bad rn either

  4. When you have 3 lottery picks and they’re all sitting on the bench to close the game. Thats the good stuff. Cant wait until Simons Grant and Ayton are gone.

  5. Best Deni game so far he looked awesome. This team is just infinitely more fun to watch when Sharpe is on the floor

  6. Shaedon was amazing. Played way better than I expected him to in his first game back. Give him 1-2 more off the bench, but then after that, we should run our starting lineup as:

    Ant/Shae/Tou/JG/DA

  7. I don’t care that he’s in bad form lately. Scoot has got to be on the floor for more than 20 minutes. This is the exact type of game, constantly trailing by double digits against a team you would be wise to hand a win to, that he needs to be on the floor for as much as possible. There was zero reason to have Ant and Grant on the floor down as much as they were for the final ~7 minutes.

  8. Awful game management by Billups. Refused to call a timeout when they went on multiple runs then loses the challenge and calls 2 at the end when the game was over smh

  9. We have to find a way to give Scoot & Sharpe the lions share of minutes going forward, spamming Ant and Grant iso does nothing for building towards the future. This team needs to make trades badly to clear up some minutes.

  10. Idk who’s gonna go to the bench, I’d hate to see it be Toumani cuz he’s earned his spot and I think he’s a guy every winning team needs in the starting lineup. Deni hasn’t been great but I think he’s a proven enough player it’d feel weird benching him this soon too.

Somehow or another though, Shaedon needs to start. As long as he stays healthy, he’s the future of this franchise, that’s all there is to it.

  11. Why does it feel like random guys usually shoot really well against us. It’s kinda annoying

  12. Shaedon is back and the minutes crunch is real. Scoot can’t be playing 20 minutes going forward in a year where development and evaluation are the priority. Good or bad he needs to be playing significant minutes this year.

  13. putting bunton + ant + grant + scoot together.. geez.. only one ball for 4 selfish players. i belive one of the biggest downsize of this group is selfishness basketball. no passing, no moving the ball, each player takes the ball and only think about his shoot. for me the only 3 unselfish players are deni, camara and clingon.

  14. I wouldn’t mind seeing Sharpe run the point for small stretches. Might force him to be assertive and he threw some dimes today.

Sharpe, Toumani, Deni, Grant, Ayton lineup would be tall, athletic, and fun

  15. So do you think Timelord is still not quite at 100% and they’re waiting until he is?

  16. I can’t agree with some of you, I thought tonight was a step back from some solid games recently. They were not consistently connected as a team on either end and were plain sloppy often. I did like the physicality we saw them play with against Wemby though, particularly Jerami, and obviously loved what we saw from Shae.

OTOH, Scoot’s stat sheet doesn’t look bad but when you watch the game, it was another somewhat pedestrian performance out there. He’s gotta earn his minutes. There’s enough talent here this season and depth that he won’t just be handed minutes and play weak basketball and that not be held accountable.

  17. Shaedon recap:

    * He looked as smooth and explosive as ever
    * His passing was excellent – the pocket pass to Clingan, cross court kick out when Wemby was closing on him and the beautiful assist to Tou
    * The reminder of his cutting and offensive rebounding chops was excellent
    * The long range shooting was better than 1/4 – half court heave and one that was in and out
    * The block on Keldon after getting the foul a possession before was nice
    * Was definitely fouled on his only turnover

My only negative is that he looked rusty or a little out of sorts on defense. Think he’ll find the pace of the game again soon, but I want to see defensive improvement along with that sweet offensive juice.

Also, some other guys played, I guess.

  18. I forgot how smooth Sharpe looks like when playing. It’s like he wasn’t even trying lol — it’s a compliment but it does make me wonder what he can do if/when he plays with high intensity

  19. Shaedon Sharpe is special. I really think he is a true prodigy because he has such an incredibly smooth and polished game for someone who started basketball late. I mean he surely puts in countless hours but man…he gave me exactly what I was hoping for and MORE. I mean instantly just shows off his superstar skillset. Someone able to get to his own pull up 3 off the bounce, create his own shot inside the arc, play in the PnR and find guys in the pocket AND over the top defenders with either hand AND be able to finish drives at the rim over WEBANYAMA?!?! After not playing in a game in almost a YEAR?!

I knew he would be a star but it’s just really really evident. I appreciate Chauncey giving Scoot/Sharpe/Clingan an extended run together in the first half. They got to find a deal for Grant asap, I thought Deni had his best first half and still only got 25 minutes but dropped 9/7/5 ugh.
