[Friedman] Hearing Daniel Sprong on way back to Seattle for future considerations

  1. Overall this doesn’t matter much in the big picture I guess but I’m kind of surprised they didn’t hang onto him at that price for longer. I don’t know if there’s enough NHL offence on the farm and with Boeser maybe down this just seems weird.

Maybe as simple as Tocchet just telling management “fuck this guy” and them cutting it off.

  2. Must mean Joshua is coming back, and the org would rather develop the young guys with the big club

    Lekkerimaki call up coming??

  3. I liked Sprong but he clearly is not a Tocchet type of player and they do need to open a spot for Joshua. Wouldn’t be surprised if they give Lekkerimaki a look if Brock is out for any extended time

  4. We must *really* have wanted to get rid of him. Boeser is presumably out, we’re not in any sort of contact slot crunch, and his salary is under a million. We’re not even getting anything back, so he could have been waived with the same general result, but I guess we don’t want him in Abby or don’t want to pay his salary.

Be interesting to know what’s happened behind the scenes here.

  5. Oh yeah, it’s Lekkerimaki-ing time.

Too bad, had a few good looks, but with Joshua coming back (I guess now fairly imminently) and some very solid AHL prospects to call up if needed, may as well accrue some cap space. Sucks it didn’t work out, but Tocc and management must have something in the works

  6. If this is it and there isn’t a larger deal in play, I will be disappointed. Sprong posed a threat offensively with limited chances and wasn’t THAT bad defensively

  7. Regardless of what you think of Sprong, I love how this management is willing to get rid of players quickly who aren’t working out and make roster spots / cap space to do more things.

Seems like Rick was done with this dude.

  8. I know he doesn’t fit the system but the timing of this trade feels odd especially after the Boeser injury

  9. Woah, must be clearly a spot on the roster for another trade?

And must be a favour to the player because it’s weird that we wouldn’t just waive him ?

  10. I’m thoroughly confused. Didn’t seem that bad, but maybe he was unhappy with his role?

  11. Considering he was never elevated up lineup or PP1 even down Boeser this was probably a favor to the agent

  12. Oof. This F. Considerations guy has been bounced all over the league. Inherited someone else’s problem

  13. Wingers ahead of Sprong:

    Boeser, Debrusk
    Joshua, Garland
    Hoglander, Suter
    Heinen, Sherwood

Legit nowhere to play him when we’re healthy.

    More cap space.

  14. Feels like he didn’t even really get a chance to settle here. I was hoping they’d at least wait until Joshua’s back and try those together. I hope we go get someone who plays more of a Sherwood-esque game for the 4th line on the cheap, none of the guys who’ve been called up have really impressed me.

  15. Damn. I don’t like this. I thought he did well to drive offence in the limited capacity he was used.

  16. I don’t like this. Sprong has been exactly what we expected him to be. Why did we sign him if we don’t actually want that type of player?

  17. ummm… why??? you got to think another move is coming. I don’t see us going to use Lekkerimaki or Räty on the 4th line long term, as it’s probably best if cook the rest the year in Abby. Bains definitely didn’t out play him. maybe Rick was asking for PDG back with the main club? but i still don’t think trading Sprong would be the best move in those cases as good cheap offensive depth for an injury worse case scenario. I really think another move has to be coming here

  18. not a huge fan, i think he has played well given the circumstances and thinking about how the second half went last season and this season has started i would not be getting rid of scoring at all.

even if he didn’t end up playing a ton i would’ve loved to have him in situations where a top-6 player is injured. i just think back to last seasons game 7 where Boeser can’t play and the respective right wingers for Miller and Pettersson were Mikheyev and Lafferty.

  19. It’s definitely a way of Allvin saying thanks for trying with us, didn’t work, go back to where you are familiar as a favour. As opposed to burying him in the press box or minors. Hopefully future FAs see that respect and are more inclined to sign here

  20. What a brilliant move. Trade a guy who can’t play defence to a divisional and geographical rival. It’s the ultimate double agent move! Masterclass by Allvin

  21. From Tocchet calling him a superstar a couple games ago to being traded for nothing…
Clearly coach didn’t like him, if I were to speculate, it would be behind the scenes stuff or not taking in practices the way they would like.

I say this because Sprong was not as bad as advertised defensive, was even improving and was a serious offensive threat in the bottom 6, helping offensively challenged teammates like Bains score. I did not like it when we skipped him during the shootout that one game and not giving him PP1 time when our PP has been dreadful. Whether you like him or not, if you put him in the line up, then just use him as a tool to win.
