RIP Wheels

  1. Lost an iconic (to me anyway) voice of the Blazers. I would listen to him and Tone every game.

  2. The tweet from John Canzano.

“Brian Wheeler, long-time Trail Blazers radio broadcaster, died this morning after an extended illness. Rest in peace, Wheels.”

This one hurts. We didn’t always have cable growing up, so I would regularly listen to the Blazer games and hear his voice and excitement. You could tell he was living his dream calling games. He was a big part of my Blazer fandom. He was my Schonz. RIP Wheels.

  3. He had the best radio voice. That deep powerful buttery smooth voice with that classic old fashioned cadence. It felt like the radio of old, until something awesome happened and he instantly transformed into an unhinged super fan screaming right there alongside us.

    RIP Wheels. You gave me so many unforgettable memories. I can still hear some of his greatest calls whenever I want;

“Brandon 3 pointer out front….HIT IT!!!!! YES HE DID!!!! OOOOOOOOHHHHHH YEEEEAAAAHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Damn.

For a lot of us, he was our Shonley on the radio. I listened to so many games when commuting from NE Portland to Beaverton. Rest in peace, good sir.

  5. I used to listen to every game that I could (no TV on school nights) and would stick around on the post game to try and win tickets by being the first caller to name the Alaska Airlines non-stop scorer. I have many great memories of hearing Wheels call the game. RIP

  6. I knew wheels for many, many years. The season I filled in for him, we would talk often. He would listen every night and give me feedback and things that I might have missed, that I could work on. He was special. He will be missed.

  7. Wheels was the best at getting me hyped when the Blazers would go on a run. With each score or defensive stop, he’d get so much more energetic in his voice.

My favorite part was when the opposing coach would call a timeout to stop the run, Wheels would have an alliteration of three words to describe how they must be feeling. “Time out Lakers, and Phil Jackson is baffled, befuddled, and bewildered!”

    RIP Wheels.

  8. I’ll say it again like I said two years ago: shame on the Blazers that Wheels had to resort to crowdfunding twice to treat his health issues after he was with the organization for 20 years.

    RIP to an absolute legend.

  9. Damn this hurts man. Wheels was the voice I heard on my radio at night as a kid when I was getting in to Blazers basketball. He was the best. RIP

  10. He was amazing, all the content he was pushing out in the bad years to keep us going. I’ll never miss an announcer like I will with wheels. Hey, he got in one last dodgers trophy! Hope that made him happy.

  11. This is the blazer’s voice that I spent the most time listening too. Love the way he called games. He was memorable, magical, and mesmerizing!

  12. Very sad to hear this. Used to listen to quite a few games when I was commuting home from work. He was exceptional at being our radio announcer for many years.

  13. Wheels was the voice of the Blazers for me growing up on the late 90s early 00s teams. Some fans had Schonz, a lot of us had Wheels. Some of my best memories as a fan are synonymous with his voice. RIP.

  14. The voice of my childhood.  I couldn’t get Blazer games of TV so all I had was a little wind up radio I’d listen to Blazer games on.

  15. Growing up we didn’t have cable and so my father and I would sit in the dark listening to Wheels. I learned to love the Blazers through his calls. We hung on his every word. We use his catchphrases in everyday conversation.

    “Boom shaka-laka!”
    “He’s flustered, flippant, and flabbergasted!”
“OAAHH!!” (Voice cracking when the Blazers are laying it on)
“You’d think they’d pulled the fire alarm the way the (opposing team’s) fans are leaving the arena!”

RIP Wheels. Thanks to you we can always say, it’s a great day to be a Blazer.

  16. I’ll never forget growing up listening to him call games with my grand parents.

    BATUUUUUUUM SHAKA LAKA! and BAAAAAAAAAAANG!

Are forever ingrained in my brain, RIP wheels and thank you for the memories.

  17. Really bothers me the blazers haven’t said anything about him passing. I remember every night growing up listening to wheels call blazers games while I was laying in bed waiting to fall asleep.
