[Morosi] Astros GM Dana Brown told me he’ll speak today with Justin Verlander’s agent, Mark Pieper, about a possible free-agent contract.

  1. You know what, I was wrong on his decision for kikuchi. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt from here on, I can’t see it but there must be something left in the tank for verlander

  2. Can’t strike anyone out. Lost a ton of velocity. Can’t throw strikes anymore.

Unless this is like a $1-2M deal I’d rather not.

I don’t doubt his ability to reinvent himself in the offseason. It’s just I don’t want to see him get an 8 figure deal and here “well we just didn’t have the money to fix the rest of the roster”

  3. Best guess is that Brown is looking to sign him as a and at a middle to back of rotation type of deal.

  4. Brown kicking the tires on a deal isn’t a bad thing. Specifically if he can get him on the cheap, with a deal laced with incentives. If anything, he’ll be a late deadline piece to trade on a cheap contract.

  5. Maybe a cheap one-year deal. To retire as an Astro and then offer him a position in management or on the staff as a Pitching Coach.

  6. People thought he was washed up when he was hurt 8-10 years ago (I forget exactly when). Once they figured out what was really bothering him (his feet), it fixed his mechanics and he came back to obviously amazing form. I think it’s worth talking to him if he can return to health. I’m not totally sold that he is completely washed…but maybe injured. It shouldn’t be a huge contract, however ..

Edit: For clarification, the foot issue was causing mechanical issues which led to other body parts (like shoulder) hurting him. Took a while for them to figure out what the real cause was. This kinda feels like it might be something similar ..

  7. I’d rather we didn’t, but I can’t help but wonder if the org is looking at him as a future HOF and want to increase their chances of getting another astros hat in. Not saying he would or should, just not sure why other than that.

  8. I personally would take the salary cap hit to give him another year here. As long as it’s not too much. It’s probably not the smartest choice but it’s what I’d like to see.

  9. If verlander takes a vet minimum, I guess that’d be okay. We cant be stuck with another contract for an overpaid, underperforming player.

  10. I love JV to death but he really just needs hang up his cleats before the bottom fully falls out

  11. Verlander is done (throwing hard down the middle) but he can be a strong 3rd starter for maybe another 3-4 years. Verlander is an athlete and a competitor. If you want a blueprint for what he can do just look at an aging Zack Greinke. Greinke placed 4th in CY voting in his 15th season and by his 17th he appeared to have little access to his former upper level velo. Verlander won the CY in his 15th and 18th seasons. He is only a year or so away from his upper level velo. With his slider, change, and curve usage increased, an occasional 4 seamer up will be hard to catch up to. This is a savvy play by Brown, but many of us knew it was coming.

You may point to the similarity in their age, Greinke is actually 8 months younger, but JV has a much livelier arm at this age.
